The strings on the Kora are made from fishing lines. Everything the African people used to make the kora out of was from creativity

Mahmoud Farhat Dr. Vera H. Flaig MHIS 130 – 002 1 December 2014 Journal Entry 2 – Chapter Ten It is in no way arguable that the term polyvocality was used in Chapter Ten in both intriguing and compelling ways. To begin, the term polyvocality is a derivation of the word polyphony, which can best be explained as a musical element of “many sounds or parts.” Therefore the term polyvocality itself can best be defined as an element of “many voices.” Polyvocality is applied in this chapter because this

The bridge at where the strings are pulled over is much higher on a kora than on a lute and its body is much more rounded and wider. Its sound is similar to that of a harp when played in the traditional style, however, the defining characteristic of the kora is that an ostinato riff can be played simultaneously with a lead run. While one might expect the citizens of Swaziland to create a downtrodden and oppressed

Aborigine). The music was passed between griots; from father to son or mother to daughter, to maintain the record (Uprising by Imiuswi Aborigine). Typically, the were two kinds of griots; one who sings and one who plays their signature instrument, the Kora (Fig. 1)(Gilden). I have contemplated the reasoning behind the two types. In my thinking, perhaps some of this caste were not talented both in vocals and instrument. In order for them to fulfill their born tasks, they might have had to perform in this

The African continent is the second largest continent in the world. It has a complex network of music throughout Africa. My main focus in this essay is music from West africa. West Africa has a particularly plentiful and manifold music tradition. Music from West Africa has made its influence significantly throughout the world, largely in terms of rhythm. Music from West Africa is known to be both sacred and secular, including to the fact that it was very much famous in history and is still famous
Whether there was a celebration or not, it was up to the griots to capture audiences with the beautiful sound of the ngoni or the kora, two of the most popular instruments used by griots. Although many other empires had music, the Malian Empire’s music was different because it served as a passage to the past. Music was a huge part of Sundiata’s travels, being played during battle

On November 13, 2016, I went with a group of people to the Calvary United Methodist Church in West Philadelphia to see a Trio Da Kali concert. After the concert, to continue the African theme we all went and ate Ethiopian food. It was much different from what I expected, but way too spicy for me. Although that does not impact my research, I thought it was interesting how much different a culture can be in music, and food, despite the countries only being separated by an ocean. Summary of Field Notes

Musical elements such as dynamics, texture, form, timbre, melody, instruments, etc., have been used to thoroughly explore each kind of music from different areas of the world, with an emphasis in music from Africa, India and Indonesia. Sundiata is an epic of a powerful king who expanded the Mali empire to a great territorial area and he did so because he was destined. My mother read me a more simplified story of Sundiata as a child and through reading this book, I remembered so many lessons and African cultural traditions that I learned as a child. There were several interesting aspects of this epic that reflected some of the material we have learned thus far in class as well as other interesting themes that are repeated throughout
This world is a big place. It is very diverse, in culture, beliefs, traditions, and even music. Music is an important part of this world; not just pop music and what many first world countries are used to, but music of the world as well, such as melodies in Cuba or Africa. These two countries share many characteristics in their music, despite being two very different places. From the melody, to the rhythm, and even the instruments and cultural practices, the countries of Cuba and Africa have both
