Over 300 athletes participated in the 1896 First Modern Olympic Games. There were also 13 countries that played a role in the games. The Olympic games took place in Athens, Greece. The Americas dominated the track and field events in these Olympics. Many countries played in these games, but not all scored very well. The creation of the games came from Pierre de Coubertin. November 25th, 1892 marked the Athletic Sports Union’s fiftieth anniversary. On this date, at a French theatre in the town of Sorbonne, Pierre de Coubertin proposed the idea of bringing the Olympic games back. On June 16th, 1894, 2 years later in the same town, it was decided that they would announce the Olympics’ return. Finally, 2 years later in 1896, the first Modern Olympics was held. Martyrdom of Saint Demetrios is a Cretan icon of the Byzantine period (figure 1). It is dated to the late fifteenth century CE. The icon consists of a tempera painting adorned with gold foil on a wooden board measuring seventeen inches tall by fourteen and one quarter inches wide by five eighths of an inch thick.
