Today’s generation of children and adults should be wary of the potential dangers of social media and texting. Originally, social media websites had the potential to help people stay connected. Using social networking sites, texting, messaging sites and other forms of mobile technology to interact socially is social media (Stephens). Moreover, texting had always been a helpful tool in emergencies but people have become more and more irresponsible. In recent years, social media and texting have proven to be hazardous to relationships, to be the creator of unwanted attention, and to be a great contributor to people’s ignorance of the harmful effects of their actions.
While more people are pulled into the world of social media, many are left feeling as though their partners are “here in body, yet there in mind”. Facebook can potentially put strain on relationships. In The Futurist, columnist Arnold Brown shares his beliefs on society slowly moving away from “reality” and instead integrating into this virtual world. The internet has changed traditional forms of interactions (Brown 29). Facebook, a popular social media website, was originally designed to keep one in touch with his or her past, but some memories, or better yet people, should stay in the past. Social media “creates, strengthens, and weakens social ties in a variety of ways” (Brown 31). For example, when accepting the friend request of an old high school crush, it can easily turn into instant messaging, text messaging, and before one knows it, emotional infidelity, because without face-to-face interactions, cheating becomes more complicated and harder to define.
