While Psychoanalysis was the first formal theory of personality influenced by Sigmund Freud of which was divided into three levels. According to the text; “there are three major components of mental structure of which are ID, Ego and Superego. Development proceeds from the id which includes the instincts or drives with which we are born, to ego and superego. Infants are at the most primitive stage, all id entirely driven by the urge to gratify instinctual urges, without any notion of what is possible or of the consequences of their actions” (Magnavita, 2012). This paper will the structural and component models of personality which will explain how the brain operates. While also exploring Id, ego, superego and the big five factors I will be including the major contributors relating to the particular model of personality.

As we have learned in world of personality and psychology a person will interact with the external world as well as respond to internal forces. This mean we will interact and respond to things and events that we have experienced or that may only be of existence independently but accepted by the human mind which impacts the way a person responds or behaves. Sigmund Freud’s structural model of personality is based off of that psyche’s three systems; id, ego and superego which are characterized by distinct roles and multiple levels of the consciousness. These levels were revised from the original three levels of personality; the conscious, preconscious and the unconscious (Segrist, 2009).

Freud believed that the ID is related to pleasure, meaning a person would do anything to please his or herself of which physical needs must be met immediately with no regards to consequences. Superego is characterized by social ...
