Critical Analysis of That Evening Sun
In That Evening Sun, William Faulkner approaches the story through an anecdotal style that gives meaning to the story. The narrator uses the anecdote that happened to him to convey the story’s underlying meaning that people are restricted by social class and race, not realizing this meaning himself at the time. The era of racism pertains to the meaning of the story, discussing the aversion of southern white people to help those different from them, focusing on the restrictions that society has placed on social class and race separation and the desire to maintain the division.
The anecdotal style in That Evening Sun allows the narrator, Quentin, to have a viewpoint and an attitude that is more mature. Since he tells the story now that he is an adult, and the anecdote comes from a memory as a child, the details are focused on smaller things. To exemplify, we see how Quentin takes time to notice Nancy’s eyes by recalling, “they looked like cats’ eyes do” (296). Information is also given to the reader in a vague way, showing how little Quentin understood about the events that took place. Quentin for instance, didn't know what the "swelling" under Nancy's dress was, and without question assumes that the bump is a “watermelon” because that’s what Jesus says it is. The reader must assume that since Nancy said to Jesus that the baby, “never come off of your vine, though” that the child is not Jesus’. The reader doesn’t acquire this knowledge from Quentin’s understanding, however, since he is not mature enough, rather interprets it from Nancy’s words. In the story, the reader can see Nancy’s feelings and thoughts, therefore we view her as a real person, but during the time she was simply a black woman and Quentin is showing that it wasn’t racism that was intentional, rather it was an upbringing that shaped the way black people were viewed. Furthermore, Jason’s repetition of “I’m not a nigger,” is not meant in a callous way, rather is meant in a “that’s just how it is” way. The social commentary on racism and it “just being there” is hidden through the children’s ramblings. The comments of the children show how much the children paid attention to the ways adults were presenting racism. The point of this being to show a memory that came from youth and concentrated on blacks just being the lower social class and race.
The stories that the author told were very insightful to what life was like for an African American living in the south during this time period. First the author pointed out how differently blacks and whites lived. She stated “They owned the whole damn town. The majority of whites had it made in the shade. Living on easy street, they inhabited grand houses ranging from turn-of-the-century clapboards to historics”(pg 35). The blacks in the town didn’t live in these grand homes, they worked in them. Even in today’s time I can drive around, and look at the differences between the living conditions in the areas that are dominated by whites, and the areas that are dominated by blacks. Racial inequalities are still very prevalent In today’s society.
The author illustrates the struggle of an average black male during his daily routine through many personal stories and relatable anecdotes. Through the actions of mentally discriminating against foreign races in America, we see in the writing, it makes them feel they are lower than everyone else. One example of this is when the proprietor got her dog as a precautionary action when he entered a jewelry store to just take a look , “She stood, the dog extended toward me, silent to my questions, her eyes nearly bulging out of her head.” The man was repetitively rejected when he questioned the dog, who wouldn’t feel less of themselves. We pity him because he was blatantly getting unconsciously discriminated by a precautionary store owner. Another example of this was when a different black male was mistaken as the killer, of a story he was working on, “ Police hauled him from his car at gunpoint and but for his press credentials would probably have tried to book him.” This man was being accused of someone he never was and was being treated with a gun. We pity him because he was abruptly hauled from his vehicle, handled as a criminal, and being discriminated at all the same
In "Barn Burning," Faulkner portrays a boy, very nearly moral awareness, who ends up cut off from the modern world of which he is beginning to understand. The boy, Sarty begins to feel his alienation take root in connection with his father, who ought to be his moral compass and lead Sarty into this new modern society. On account of his father's criminal impulsiveness and a knack for starting fires, Sarty ends up, in the beginning of the story victimized and insulted by a kid, who he attacks back. His father has taught him to see others as the "enemy" (X.J. Kennedy). When Sarty’s father is charged with arson by Mr. Harris, he consequently labels him as "our enemy . . . hisn and ourn” (X.J. Kennedy pg. 147). The story closes with Sarty alone on at night on a hill viewing the stars. Faulkner depicts the Sarty’s loneliness, learned through his years of abuse and neglect. While reading "The Kind of Light that Shines Over Texas," I noticed that the author emphasized the different reactions of minorities towards racism and injustice. The varying responses truly showed how much the blatant racism affected them and their behavior. Ah-so isolated herself in reticence and seemed to “build a home” in herself, creating walls and barriers that kept everyone else out. On the other hand, the narrator, an anti hero, denied his racial identity and sucked up to those who treated him badly. The unjustifiable hatred of others causes us to do irrational things in order to gain their acceptance and approval. In the novel, A Light in August, William Faulkner introduces us to a wide range of characters of various backgrounds and personalities. Common to all of them is the fact that each is type cast into a certain role in the novel and in society. Lena is the poor, white trash southern girl who serves to weave the story together. Hightower is the fanatic preacher who is the dark, shameful secret of Jefferson. Joanna Burden is the middle-aged maiden from the north who is often accused of being a “nigger-lover”. And Joe Christmas is the epitome of an outsider. None of them are conventional, everyday people. They are all in some way disjointed from society; they do not fit in with the crowd. Wilkerson conveys a sense of authenticity as she not only articulates the accounts of Ida Mae Brandon Gladney, George Swanson Starling, and Robert Joseph Pershing Foster, but also intertwines the tales of some 1,200 travelers who made a single decision that would later change the world. Wilkerson utilizes a variety of disciplines including sociology, psychology, and economics in order to document and praise the separate struggles but shared courage of three individuals and their families during the Great Migration.

Hate cannot drive out hate: only love can do that.”-Martin Luther King Jr. This quote shows how racism is like darkness and hate and love and light are the only way to drive racism out. The story takes place at the time of the great depression. Scout lives in a very racist and judgement city in the south. A black male is accused of raping a white woman. Scouts dad Atticus gets appointed to be the defendant's lawyer. Racism is an antagonist in To Kill A Mockingbird because the white people of Maycomb discriminate the blacks and make them feel lesser. The theme racism can be harmful to everyone is shown by many characters throughout the book.
Racism affects and influences society no matter the time period. This idea of certain races possessing characteristics that go beyond others, that have superiority over others, idealizes society as a whole. Authors grasp racism and base their opinions of the controversial topics into their literary works. William Faulkner utilizes this idea by breaking down Joe Christmas in Light in August, and forces him through struggles because of racism. Faulkner reflects upon racism found within the Southern society of the time period through Joe Christmas’ inability to connect with black and white communities, dooming him to the perimeter of society where he lacks an identity and leading him to his tragic fall.
In 1960, a novel was written to outline injustices and racism against those who were innocent, though unfairly judged because of social expectations and prejudiced beliefs. This novel not only presented these issues, but is also considered a revolutionary piece of literature, still being read by many people today, more than 50 years later. The novel, To Kill a Mockingbird, has caused some controversy about the intents of the book and the way certain people or groups are presented. Whether To Kill a Mockingbird as a narrative outshines the issue it presents is a debatable argument. However, I believe that the narrative of the novel supports the concerns exhibited for numerous reasons. In what follows, some of these are presented: the historical
Faulkner used such language to portray the things he experienced and saw. The themes show that he wanted others to understand what others may have gone through. It was way for him to show discrimination through, racisms, culture in the word usage and the sexism of males against females. The short story also portrays in some way of how it’s relevant to today’s society, it may be used differently it shows that prejudice still goes along ways, but not just from history or short stories, but in today’s world.
