Lin's work, unlike most previous military monuments, rejects the emphasis on heroics in favor of a poignant, contemplative, apolitical design which conveys an almost unbearable sense of loss. Simple, graceful, and abstract, the design specified two 246.75 foot long walls of polished black southern India granite, set below grade and connected at a 125 degree angle.2 Each segment of the wall is composed of 70 panels. At their intersection, the walls are 10.1 feet high and they taper down to a height of 8 inches at their extremities.3 The largest panels have 137 lines of names.4 The smallest panels have just one line. Each line consists of five names, which were sandblasted into the polished surface by hand, rather than cut into it with machine tools.5 Currently, the monument wall lists the names of 58,175 members of the armed forces who were confirmed killed or listed as missing in action during the Vietnam War.6
“The President also acted as next of kin by accepting the interment flag at the end of the ceremony”(“The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier”). All the interment flags are on display in the Memorial Display Room. The Vietnam Unknown was the final burial in the tomb. The interment flags of the Vietnam and all the others are on
On February 6, 2016, I had the privilege of being a chaperone for Byron Elementary School 5th grade class in Byron, Georgia on a trip to Washington D.C. However, when the students and I began to tour the different memorial sites at in Washington D.C. we came across a lot of sculptures, but the one sculpture that I felt was amazing was the Marine Corps Memorial. The Marine Corps statue was designed in honor of the men and women that served in the Marines during World War II, who gave their lives to protect the United States during the war since 1775 (Marines, 2016). The sculpture is known as the Iwo Jima Memorial, which we visited outside of the Arlington National Cemetery, which is located in the Arlington Ridge Park. The sculpture is adjacent to the Potomac River from Washington D.C.
Cemeteries represent numerous lives and memories commemorating their deaths in scenes of cultural and social
I see my monument as encompassment of the greats of the world, pulling in leaders from different parts of the world and also different fields. I think the best place to put an international monument would be somewhere that is not claimed by any one entity. Therefore, I chose to place it on the moon. By placing it on the moon, everyone will be able to experience this large proof of how great a human can be. Mother Teresa, Marie Curie, Nelson Mandela, and Sir Winston Churchill shows traits that humans can aspire to be, while creating a memorable recognition of their actions.
This gathering to honor the American Veteran is a tribute to their glory and their devotion to duty.
The Vietnam War Memorial. It is a wall, but it is also a monster that many avoid, and many are nervous to visit. In truth, all it is though is fact. It lists the names of all the soldiers that died in the conflict that was staged in a small country in Asia. All the names of the people.
At the end of World War II, Japanese forces in Indochina turned over power to Vietnamese Nationalists. Japan had created an independent Vietnamese government. Japan allowed this government to be displaced by the Viet Minh under Ho Chi Minh. (The History Place, Beginner’s Guide)
Not only are military heroes buried at Arlington, but memorials have also been built to honor others who have given their lives for America. The memorials that are located throughout Arlington tell a story about people throughout American history (Reef 43). Each year families walk the endless rows of white head stones at Arlington in order to pay their respects to the ones that have given their lives for America.
The Vietnam Veterans Memorial recognizes and honors the men and women who served in one of America's most divisive wars. The memorial was conceived and designed to make no political statement whatsoever about the war. The Vietnam Veterans Memorial is a place where everyone, regardless of opinion, can come together and remember and honor those who served. By doing so, the memorial has paved the way towards reconciliation and healing, a process that continues today. The Vietnam Veterans Memorial accomplishes these goals through the three components that comprise the memorial: the Wall of names, the Three Servicemen Statue and Flagpole, and the Vietnam Women's Memorial.
The U.S National World War II Memorial is a national memorial to honor and remember the sixteen million people who served in the armed forces of the United States and also the people at home during World War II. It is also a monument to the spirit, sacrifice, and commitment of the American people (National). The memorial is located on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., on the former site of the Rainbow Pool at the eastern end of the Reflecting Pool, between the Lincoln Memorial and the Washington Monument. Located in Southeast Asia, Thailand has become a well-known destination to many travelers since the early stage of mass tourism. The boost of tourism in Thailand started with Vietnam War where Thailand became a popular destination for the rest and recreation of US military. Since then the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) was established as an official organization to promote the country’s tourism (McDowall & Wang, 2009). Despite a lot of world external factors negatively affected Thailand tourism such as Gulf War 1991, Asia Financial Crisis 1997, SARS 2003 and Tsunami 2004, the overall number of tourists was increasing due to the quick response of the government to the needs of tourism industry and the effect of targeted promotional campaigns (Zhang, Qu & Tavitiyaman, 2009). According to TAT (2014), the international tourist arrivals increased over 333 times from 0.08 million in 1960 to 26.7 million in 2013. And in the same period, tourism revenue rose from US$10 million to US$38 billion. Although Thailand hosted a significant number of tourists and gained a lot of revenue from tourism, Thailand also suffered from negative effects such as AIDS, negative image of sex tourism (Li & Zhang, 1997), degradation of the environment (Koont...
