I once wrote about technology being the foundation of my life. Along with that is the caveat that technology is not all there is to life. With using technology comes great power, power to learn anything one would like to, power to find out information on any subject and any person with a few keystrokes. I have always stressed to my students the importance of keeping personal information private. One task my students had was to Google themselves and their families. The amount of information was usually surprising to them and their parents with whom I had them share the information. In some cases it was through no fault of theirs or their parents that information could be found on the Internet. Today there are newsletters posted from various organizations with all kinds of information. If one lives in the public then there are digital traces to be found online.
As a teacher it is my responsibility to keep my students safe but what is more important is to teach them about the social, ethical, legal, and human issues surrounding the use of technology. From the first day of school when I introduced our year out came the special online user agreements for the various Web-based projects we did. The students had to get them signed by a parent or guardian before we got started. This was along with the general Internet agreement they signed the first day of school, in some cases when they started Kindergarten. I felt that by sixth grade students should take more responsibility for their actions when using technology. It is also my responsibility to follow laws for children under thirteen. This can make it difficult to do everything I would like to as a teacher in the online world.
Working with sixth graders or teachers they all come...

...esources, through my studies at the university, as a classroom teacher and as an educational technology teacher I am constantly learning about new ways to make that access possible. I learn on my own, through my studies and from others about how to promote the use of technology resources in a safe manner. I apply this knowledge to my teaching as I continue to learn, research and develop programs in my district.

We’re learning simpler ways to do things in our everyday lives. We’re beginning to rely on technology to give us the answers, which is nice. I myself use google and the many other resources that technology provides. Most often you can find my phone in my hands. However, I sometimes feel the need to just open a book or do research the old way. Technology is so useful and I agree that it’s great for everything, but it’s almost brainwashing. We’re constantly relying on it to do most everything for us. Need to find something, just type the description into the search engine and millions of links, videos, articles, pictures, and discussions will appear. Everything we need and need to know is at our
Privacy is becoming rare as our society continues to become more industrialized and move towards a society hyper-focused on technology. Nicholas Carr explains this obsession with technology in his essay “Tracking Is an Assault on Liberty.” He identifies three dangers that are present in today’s internet society that are: personal data can fall into the wrong hands easily, personal information may be used to influence our behavior, and personal privacy is eroding and may lead us as a society to devalue the concept of privacy. These dangers are not only possible but they are seen in our world today.
Alaskan culture is full of a variance of characteristics. The Alaskan people have a deep sense of respect, pride and honor. This is as a result of the need and ability to adapt to an ever changing environment and still find a way to thrive. The Alaskan people are a strong representation of the American spirit of perseverance. The research done in this paper allowed me to view the Alaskan Native in an entirely different manner. My intent with this paper is to inform the reader on Alaskan culture, geographical breakdown, beliefs, as well as highlight the advancements of the Alaskan way of life throughout the years.
The word “privacy” has a different meaning in our society than it did in previous times. You can put on Privacy settings on Facebook, twitter, or any social media sights, however, nothing is truly personal and without others being able to view your information. You can get to know a person’s personal life simply by typing in their name in google. In the chronicle review, “Why Privacy Matters Even if You Have ‘Nothing to Hide,'" published on May 15th 2011, Professor Daniel J. Solove argues that the issue of privacy affects more than just individuals hiding a wrong. The nothing-to-hide argument pervades discussions about privacy. Solove starts talking about this argument right away in the article and discusses how the nothing-to-hide
In chapter four the focus switches away from assistive technology supporting students in one content area and focuses on the teaching profession and how assistive technology can assist teachers to employ a universal design for learning. The Universal Design for Learning (UDL) promote learning that best for the student and promoting students a variety of methods to express their knowledge.

I would definitely take it upon myself to teach my Pre-K kids how to be digital citizens at their age. For the reason, that technology is so accessible that I would not be surprised if my students had access to IPads, phones, or a laptop. I would highlight the importance of getting their parents’ permission before accessing a website. Then I would teach them how to be safe online and to never share any personal information. I would do this by just simply talking to them and maybe showing some videos of a time a child was not demonstrating digital citizenship and the negative outcomes that occurred. Additionally, I would model good digital citizenship by being professional in all social media, such as, Twitter and Facebook. I will do this by
“The universal design for learning involves the conscious and deliberate planning of lessons and outcomes that allow all students access to and participation in the same curricula.” (Ashman & Elkins, 2008, p. 248) When curricula, instruction and assessment are designed using UDL students are offered various approaches of; presentation, expression, and engagement (who, what and why of learning). Using the UDL teachers must allow students to present information and content in different ways, differentiate the ways that students can express what they know, and stimulate interest, engagement and motivation for learning. (Ashman & Elkins, 2...
In the last decade, increasingly powerful technologies have begun to make their way into classrooms across the nation. Many classrooms are now equipped with personal computers that run educational software to help teach students facts and concepts in a more engaging way than a traditional lecture. Advances in telecommunications technologies have led to almost universal access to the Internet, allowing students and teachers to communicate with people from around the world and gain access to a wealth of educational materials. New ways of obtaining and presenting information have given students powerful new methods for understanding the world around them. However, while use of technology in the classroom has been shown to be highly beneficial for students, it is important to note that without a well-planned technology support system, this expensive educational technology often goes under- or mis-utilized..
Kids now want to be more independent and have more freedom which might scare some if not most parents. A lot of parents look at the internet as a dangerous tool and not a tool where their kids can have some freedom. Although parents need to realize that they can’t protect their kids from all ...
In our generation, the Internet allows us to have the world at our fingertips. Any information you ever need or want is just a Google search away. There is a mix of nearly 500 personal websites and blogs on search engines like Google, Bing, Yahoo, and Ask Jeeves. (Brazier) The Internet is one of the most powerful tools we have in this society. People fail to realize though is that anyone can write what they
Technology has really affected the life of many in the world today. An extensive number of people have become addicted to what technology brings to the table. The majority of the audience being young teens. Technology has brought life to social media. Social media is taking over young minds. At a young age, kids are exposed to many things in the internet such as a sexualization. Which can cause many social problems when out in the real world. Not being able to process the right mentality can consequently result in bad decisions. These bad decisions can be regrettable and sometimes can be the cause of unemployment. Technology should be monitored by parent to prevent the problems that these kids encounter.
In the early years of computers and computerized technology, computer engineers had to believe that their contribution to the development of computer technology would produce positive impacts on the people that would use it. During the infancy of computer technology, ethical issues concerning computer technology were almost nonexistent because computers back then were not as multifaceted as they are today. However, ethical issues relating to computer technology and cyber technology is undeniable in today’s society. Computer technology plays a crucial role in all aspects of our daily lives. Different forms of computer technology provide unique functionalities that allow people to perform daily activities effectively and efficiently. In modern society, we use computer and cyber technology to communicate with friends and family via social networking sites, participate in business transactions, and get current news. Different tasks require unique technological feature in computer technology to function properly. Although, unique technological features increase people’s proficiency in accomplishing various tasks, unique technological features in computer and cyber technology increase security vulnerabilities. In many cases, the security vulnerabilities in computer technology are exploited by cybercriminals to invade people’s privacy, and steal people’s identity. We know that computers have no moral compass; they cannot make moral decisions for themselves. Essentially, people make moral decisions that affect others positively or negatively depending on how they use computer technology. Some of the biggest ethical issues facing people in the computing environment include privacy concerns on the web and identity theft. Privacy concerns...
Cyber bullying and online crime must be put at a stop. Parents and teachers should play a great role in regulating what their kids are doing on social media. Parents give their children smart phones, tablets, and computers but they fail to convey the proper way of using those tools. They should teach them the rules of being on social media by telling them from right to wrong. Parents don’t give their children a car to use without telling them the proper rules of how to drive the car. If they don’t teach them how to drive the car then that child wouldn’t know what to do about his or her car and may lead to an accident. This is the same way of how parents should also teach their kids of how to regulate on social media. There are many privacy settings on these social network sites which some kids are not aware off or simply do not care about. We should put an aware of these settings to them and teach them from right to wrong. Parents and teachers should also encourage their kids to come talk to them if they are facing any type of
A safe supportive school climate can also help prevent cyber bullying. A tone of respect and trust can help the student share their feelings. The misuse of technology begins with the school culture and education. The school culture “sets the stage for everything that happens within the school” and affects every aspect. Student engagement, collaboration to prioritize challenges and opportunities, setting goals, action planning, assessing attitude and engaging in openness are the six characteristics that can help build a positive school culture (Taylor & Fratto, 2012, pp. 54-58). It’s also important to educate students about the misuse of technology, the consequences and dependency. The power of blogs, social networking and interacting with a larger audience have to be monitored. Students need to be instructed earlier on password, safety, security and sharing information on the internet. Reviewing digital citizenship can not only help prevent cyber bulling, buy it can also help detect
