Symbolism in A Worn Path by Eudora Welty

In the short story “A Worn Path” the author uses symbolism through the short story, symbolism is the use of symbols to represent ideas or qualities. Symbolism is the part of the story that is not so literal, it’s the part of the story where you have to use your mind to find it, sometimes it can be really difficult to but most of the time it is really easy. In some stories there’s a lot of them but in some there not many. Like in our short story, A Worn Path by Eudora Welty there is a lot of them.

This short story is about an old black lady, whose name is phoenix Jackson that makes sacrifices, for his grandson, she has to go to Natchez, is a city far from where Phoenix Jackson lives. She goes there to get medicine for her grandson. This lady had to face many obstacles in her way like her fall into a ditch, and she was mad at herself for falling, but it was actually a dog who made her fall into it, she needed help but no one helped her until the white hunter came and help, he didn’t thought that she had a good reason for her to go to the city so he told her to go back, but she said she had to go for something important, then she saw a dime in the floor that it was probably of the White hunter, she got it when the White hunter was distracted then the White hunter pointed the gun at her, she didn’t get scare so the White hunter respected that and he said that if “he had a dime he would had giving it to her” (Welty 1278), which it was pretty ironic because Phoenix had the dime and the White hunter didn’t know so it was like if the White hunter gave the dime to her.
