“Sweet!” People use the word as a replacement for awesome as much as they love sweet things. Indeed, sweetness is the first taste a newborn baby recognizes, and it is crucial for living; it gives energy and is important as the sole energy source of the brain (Sigelman & Rider 184). While people have heard that sugar can be dangerous, it seems they do not much care about it. In fact, it is not widely known how bad it is or the consequences, yet people can access sugar products very easily. In a cultural context, sweet things are usually used as a reward or a gift; there are even candy holidays such as Valentine’s Day, Easter and Halloween. But most of all, America is surrounded by processed and fast foods that contain enormous quantities of sugar. People may claim that they are fine because they do not have a sweet tooth. But the truth is that there are so many hidden sources of sugar that people can’t be free from it. The excessive sugar intake that causes physical, mental, and social problems is underestimated and people should be aware of its hidden danger.
Physical problems from excessive sugar involve a wide range of symptoms from tooth decay or nutritional imbalance to serious diseases such as diabetes, obesity, cardiovascular related diseases, osteoporosis, high blood pressure, inflammation, suppressing immune system, Alzheimer’s, and cancer, etc. In fact, three undesirable things are happening once sugar is inside the body: it is broken down abnormally fast, produces potential harmful substances, and depletes body nutritional resources.

The numbers in our world don’t lie: A shocking statistic is that there are currently thirty percent more people who are obese than there are healthy. This discussion arose from the staggering facts that obesity is becoming more of an epidemic than ever before. The United States has a choice to make: Take the steps necessary to slow obesity or do nothing at all, like it feels we are currently doing. Sugar concentration found within the body is usually attained from the consumption of food, such as sweets, fruits, bread, pasta and grain. The sugar from the food consumption is broken down by the body in order to give energy for the body which allows it to function. The energy broken down from the sugar is used to help the body to carry on with daily functions such as moving or thinking.
The Sugar Overload video is a very interesting report which intends to demonstrate how food industries and health organizations work hand in hand. Since both industries are enormous, they have discovered that it is better to work together than against each other. They have done so by deceiving consumers about the amount of sugars in their supposedly healthy foods and by diminishing the health problems related to sugar consumption.
Primarily, sugar is considered an “empty calorie” product which means that it has no essential fats, nutrients, proteins, or minerals to help our body. It is just pure energy. Rather than helping our body, sugar has negative effects on us, such as affecting our concentration. Without the nutrients that normal people need for the day, the people will most likely fall asleep easily and quickly. Especially for students, nutrients are essential in helping them concentrate during their studies. Adults also need their daily nutrients during work hours. Nowadays, many students are already distracted from other factors such as cellphones and computers. With an additional factor,sugar, this could lead to a serious consequence. Students could face an academic failure; adults could face the risk of losing their jobs.
We are all familiar with sugar. It is sweet, delicious, and addictive; yet only a few of us know that it is deadly. When it comes to sugar, it seems like most people are in the mind frame knowing that it could be bad for our health, but only a few are really taking the moderate amounts.
