The medical field is a very interesting career field. There are hundreds of different occupations within this field, including anything from saving a fragile newborn baby’s life to prescribing antibiotics to a relatively healthy adult. No two occupations are exactly alike, but each one is equally important. Although there are several job variations in medicine, they all have at least one thing in common. Every occupation within the medical field relies heavily on mathematics. Elementary mathematics, geometry and algebra are all obviously crucial to advancing in new technology, saving lives and curing diseases. However, most people do not realize the importance math has on simpler tasks performed every day by doctors, nurses, x-ray technicians, pharmacists, and the hundreds of other jobs in this fascinating career field. With the use of basic as well as advanced mathematics, we have achieved many life-saving medical advances and will continue to save lives as well as perform less complicated medical tasks.
Perhaps one of the most used mathematic skill in the medical field is converting units. According to a study based on IMS’s Vector One Database, in the year 2011 alone there were 3,764,698,318 prescriptions filled in the United States (SDI Health). In order to prescribe and fill these prescriptions, pharmacists and doctors had to precisely calculate medication measurements. Medication is prescribed using the metric system, often in milligrams per kilogram (Glydon). To figure how much medicine to prescribe to a patient, a doctor must first convert their patient’s weight in pounds to kilograms. Thus the responsibility for charging or crediting medication belongs to technicians. This aspect of their job is strictly governed by federal regulations. These laws hold the technician directly responsible for the accuracy of a patient’s account’s charge and credit transactions. Because every dose is related to a specific day and time, when technicians credit they must apply that change to the corresponding dose. Assignificant as accuracy is to the patient’s account, accuracy in the making of their medications is even more important.

Chapter Fourteen, Algebraic Thinking, Equations, and Functions, begins with defining the big ideas of algebraic and functional thinking. Each big idea is taught by combining objects and mathematical situations and the connection between the two. Algebraic and Functional thinking are taught as early as Kindergarten, where the teacher connects the mathematical situations to real world problems. Algebra is a broad concept; however, if we look at the number system, patterns, and the mathematical model we can make it explicit and connect it to arithmetic. This chapter highlights three major ways to incorporate arithmetic and algebra in the classroom: number combinations, place-value relationships, and algorithms. In each category, there are subcategories that feature properties. It continues to spotlight how to understand, apply, and use the properties presented. The contemporary world is full of marvels. Technological advances have enabled mankind to fly in the heavens, instantaneously communicate with distant relatives thousands of miles away, construct buildings that are able to withstand many natural disasters, cure deadly diseases, and even travel to and study areas beyond the confines of planet Earth. While there are many factors that contributed to man’s ability to overcome what many once thought were impossible feats, it is the study of engineering that has enabled one to study the elements and leverage all that they have to offer. Mathematics lies at the heart of all science, including engineering. Without progressions in mathematical concepts, engineering principles and applications would not have advanced as quickly as they have throughout history.

I also learned that mathematics was more than merely an intellectual activity: it was a necessary tool for getting a grip on all sorts of problems in science and engineering. Without mathematics there is no progress. However, mathematics could also show its nasty face during periods in which problems that seemed so simple at first sight refused to be solved for a long time. Every math student will recognize these periods of frustration and helplessness.

According to World Health Organization, the number of people with blindness due to infectious diseases has reduced in the last 20 years whereas 80% of all visual impairment can be prevented or cured. Despite of that, 285 million people are estimated to be visually impaired worldwide as about 90% are from low-income society. Considering this scenario, it is still necessary to think about this public and know how to teach them disciplines such as Mathematics that are important to their lives as citizens.
