In this paper, I consider the growing role of social media in presidential politics during the current era. The research questions the extent of the political impact of social media on the president and his communication with the public. It is necessary thus to examine the properties that make social media an attractive tool to use, the different ways the president interacts with social media, and both benefits and limitations of using social media as a platform for communication. As a result, it is essential to make conclusions regarding the nature of the relationship between social media and the presidential politics.
In the current time, it seems like one cannot go a day without using at least one social media website. This might be especially true among groups of teenagers and young adults. Social media became a vital part of daily life that feeds people with several types of information constantly. Political news is a type of information that can reach the people through the means of social media. Since presidents are constantly seeking new strategies to increase their communication with the public in order to spread their political message, they utilize the different social media websites. Hence, social media became a platform to spread political message. It is not surprising that now the majority of political officials and candidates have social media accounts more than ever before, such as a Twitter account.
One of the properties that allow social media to be an attractive tool to use by politicians is the ability to attract a massive audience of users. The researchers present findings that indicate that a politician’s popularity in the voting booth may be related to the frequency with which the candidate is talked about on social media. The researchers goes on to discuss how further research may conclude that social media has a bigger impact on voting outcomes than traditional forms of media, and how that could potentially shape the future of voting.
Social media has changed the way that people interact with one another for the rest of time. People can use social media to share their lives, opinions, and more importantly their political views. Some of the most popular social media platforms are Facebook, where one can post their own thoughts along with pictures and video, Twitter, where one posts short messages, Instagram, where one posts pictures along with captions, Tumblr, where one can post a variety of different media, and Snapchat, where one can share videos and picture with their friends for a short amount of time. Over the past few years, social media has had a significant effect on the communication, knowledge, and public reaction to assorted topics in our society today. Social media has been a great addition to our society today in helping spread news more quickly and makes us communicate more efficiently, but the negatives overshadow the positives. Specific types of social media such as Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram have been a catalyst to giving people the opportunities to expose topics and voice their opinions to the public eye. We see athletes, celebrities, and politicians being affected by this every day. In our lives today, everyone has lost their right to privacy due to the expansions and advances of social media. Whenever a tweet is posted on Twitter or a picture is posted on either Instagram or Facebook, many people will emphasize their opinion and sometimes create negative views that can hurt the person being talked about or viewed. We have seen in many major topics in the news, reporters and writers will blast certain topics out of proportion. News stations even affect social media because they often use posts in their reporting. Thus, people will continue to voice their views on social media, causing its influence to continually grow. Social Media has the ability to violate our personal privacy and expose the negative interpretations on people and topics in society.
Presently, two hundred million users send upward of 140 million messages per day, 140-character musings studded with misspellings, slang, and abbreviations. Moreover, it includes harsh truths, memes and also lies. But it has become the most important public sphere for a global, inclusive audience. Therefore, social media sphere like twitter that has often been discredited or not valued as real public engagement has actually transformed itself into the most global, inclusive public sphere where the public is able to engage — whether truthfully or not — and to become more aware and reflective. The 2008 presidential election was historic. The United States elected its first African-American president and the use of the internet and social media greatly influenced the way elections played out for the first time in history. This election set a precedent for the way politicians could use social media to reach out to voters who they may not otherwise have a connection with. Mass media and social media changed the way elections played out by increasing voter intelligence, encouraging young people and people of color to vote, and spreading propaganda via the internet.
This years election may be one of the most important in America's electoral history. Candidates spend up to ten percent of their campaign money on social media which will be reaching out to the seventy-eight percent of Americans that use social media. Social media is the sharing of ideas between people on different websites and platforms. This is one of the top ways for candidates to influence people to vote for them by spreading the ideas of their campaign. Although candidates try to spread their ideals on social media, they are not the only ones that have access to it. Their are many sites that have misleading information about candidates that cause false propaganda that can and, most likely will affect peoples votes. While their are many pros for using social media for the elections their are more cons to be found, because of the people trying to spread propaganda and their own biased views.
Presidential debates and campaigns over time have developed widely because of social media. The majority of America can research, converse and ask questions through various types of social media that can lead to positive and negative outcomes. “Although the internet had been around for years prior to the 2008 Presidential Elections, it used to be more of a luxury and now it has become a way of life. It is common belief that social media and the Internet are now one of the most important features that a political candidate could have and it could make or break their race,” (Orozco, 2014). The focus of this analysis will be on Mr. Trump’s use of social media sites, namely Twitter. Mr. Trump has a twitter feed that according to Amber Phillips of the Washington Post, “Trump tweets, at minimum, 10 times a day, nearly every day. On Oct. 31 — a typical day in Trump 's campaign — he tweeted 59 times.” (Phillips). Therefore, Donald uses Twitter quite often. By redefining social media and participation, Effing et al pointed out that with the growth of social media, “politicians and government could create opportunities for political participation: enabling, engaging and empowering followers for various benefits.” (p. 30)Nevertheless, their field study showed a results contradicting their prediction, which indicated that “use of social media does not always result in a more effecitve political campaign” (p. 32).
