Edna seeks occupational freedom in art, but lacks sufficient courage to become a true artist. As Edna awakens to her selfhood and sensuality, she also awakens to art. Originally, Edna “dabbled” with sketching “in an unprofessional way” (Chopin 543). She could only imitate, although poorly (Dyer 89). She attempts to sketch Adèle Ratignolle, but the picture “bore no resemblance” to its subject. After her awakening experience in Grand Isle, Edna begins to view her art as an occupation (Dyer 85). She tells Mademoiselle Reisz that she is “becoming an artist” (Chopin 584). Women traditionally viewed art as a hobby, but to Edna, it was much more important than that. Painting symbolizes Edna’s independence; through art, she breaks free from her society’s mold. One form of art which is predominant in The Awakening is piano playing. Piano playing symbolizes a woman’s role in society. In Edna’s society, artistic skill, such as piano playing and sketching, were accomplishments which ladies acquired. They were merely enhancements to their education, not possibilities for occupation. Women artists, whether they were musicians, painters, or writers, had a difficult time being accepted in society (Dyer 86). Kate Chopin presents two women who are foils to Edna: Madame Ratignolle and Mademoiselle Reisz (Koloski 117). Both of these women play the piano; however, their purpose and motivations are vastly different. The way in which they view their piano playing reflects their values. Adèle Ratignolle uses art to beautify her home. Madame Ratignolle represents the ideal mother-woman (Bloom 119). Her chief concerns and interests are for her husband and children. On the other hand, choosing the solitude of the sea is a triumph of Edna’s artistic soul. In life, there is no real solitude; Edna fearlessly swims out to face the solitude of death. The Awakening by Kate Chopin is the story of a women that is going through struggles and is trying to break free from her current situations. In this novel, Edna Pontellier releases herself from her deepest cravings, starts a relationship that rekindles her long sexual desires that jump starts her heart, and eventually takes over and Edna can see nothing else. As she goes through many changes Edna gets involved in many activities. One of these activities is painting; painting becomes one of her favorite pastimes and her artwork often reflects important people in her life. Edna’s emotions take charge in her paintings and helps Edna decide when and what she wants to paint, this is why the readers get a sense of strong passion when Edna paints.
In Kate Chopin’s The Awakening, Edna Pontellier’s suicide is an assertion of her independence and contributes to Chopin’s message that to be independent one must choose between personal desires and societal expectations. Chopin conveys this message through Edna’s reasons for committing suicide and how doing so leads her to total independence.

In Chopin's Awakening, the reader meets Edna Pontellier, a married woman who attempts to overcome her "fate", to avoid the stereotypical role of a woman in her era, and in doing so she reveals the surrounding. society's assumptions and moral values about women of Edna's time. Edna helps to reveal the assumptions of her society. The people surrounding her each day, particularly women, assume their roles as "housewives"; while the men are free to leave the house, go out at night, gamble, drink and work. Edna surprises her associates when she takes up painting, which represents a working job and independence for Edna.

In Kate Chopin’s, The Awakening, Edna Pontellier is unsatisfied with her life. She has thoughts and actions that were considered inappropriate by many people during her life. These people did not approve of a woman such as Edna defending herself and going against societal norms. Symbols can be found in the story that help to explain Edna’s true desires and foreshadow her actions. In the novel, Chopin successfully uses symbols such as the sea, the birds, and the woman in black in The Awakening to express Edna’s true feelings.

From all this chaos, Edna is consistently trying to find and express herself. She has a strong feeling towards being set free and the importance of herself to her. “I would give up the unessential; I would give my money, I would give my life for my children; but I wouldn’t give myself. I can’t make it more clear; it’s only something which I am beginning to comprehend, which is revealing itself to me.” (47). What Edna is stating, is much deeper than a simple feeling on how she would not give herself away for her children. She’s expressing her emotions on the creativity of feministic thoughts and feels who you are as your own person is essential. Another example is, "You have been a very, very foolish boy, wasting your time dreaming of impossible things when you speak of Mr. Pontellier setting me free! I am no longer one of Mr. Pontellier's possessions to dispose of or not. I give myself where I choose. If he were to say, 'Here, Robert, take her and be happy; she is yours,' I should laugh at you both." (108). This shows Edna again exploring feminist thoughts and the feeling that she is not an object. Kate Chopin shows many of the same feelings and readers see this through characters like Edna and other literary sources. In Kate Chopin’s The Awakening, there are a multitude of elements that highlight the suppressive standards that women were expected to meet. However, one of the most interesting aspects of the novel is Chopin’s development of the relationship between art and the artist, as documented through not only the protagonist, Edna, but also other characters throughout the story. While the relationship of artistry might seem trivial in comparison with the other themes of the plot, Edna’s interactions with her art fosters her passion for freedom, challenges the socio economic role of women, and questions the definition of what makes an artist.
