A student at Walden University will write in a scholarly manner and follow the principles and guidelines for doing so. It is of importance for a student to obtain research material that supports their writing from credible sources. With the Walden University library, a student can ensure that they are using credible sources for research material, reviewed, by peers and other scholars in the field. Programs such as grammerly provide the students of Walden University with the additional resources to check grammar and punctuation. The combination of these sources enables the student to improve their writing skills and achieve a scholarly writing style. Research Strategy The student accessed the Walden University library through the mywalden portal and used the links in the academic portion of the site to direct them into the library. The Walden University library offers a variety of methods for conducting research. The student can choose to limit the research to only topics within a specific subject or include all subject areas. In this exercise, the student conducted research through the Walden University library website and narrowed the search to select only articles that were peer-reviewed. A search for sources that were from current sources, specifically for articles that were written in the period of 2010 through the present; however, there were none that pertained to the student’s area of study. The student selected five articles from credible sources that were all peer reviewed. The student then chose to have the articles emailed to their email account for later reference use. In Downs and Wardle’s article, they argue and identify the flaws in teaching writing in college. Demonstrating the misconceptions that academic writing is universal, but rather specialized in each case. Citing studies and opinions from esteemed professionals, Downs & Wardle state their points and illuminate the problem in today’s many colleges.

According to Dr. Bean’s class syllabus, the primary goal for this course is to, “help you develop the literacy skills you’ll need during your academic career”. In other words, this class was designed to teach students to write like professionals in an academic discourse community. Through several writing and research assignments, we acted as researchers on a quest to examine “how discourse—written, spoken, and digital—is shaped by social practice”. Although I felt I was a decent enough writer, I had doubts that I could accomplish such a tall order of directives. In the end, I found that I could do it, and I did it rather well, thus giving me the boost I needed to continue to move forward on my dream of obtaining a college degree.
The literature review and the research process use both Appendix A and Appendix B to understand how to chose the research topic and plan the research. Throughout the literature se...
As the semester finally approaches the finish line, I revisit my past work to compare and contrast how this class has developed me into a successful writer at the college level. Throughout the year my writing style has developed and become broader as I have learned how to incorporate more of my personal views as well as reliable, unbiased information. This portfolio is a representation of how many things I have learned along the way while being an English 102 student.
This article hasn’t provided an introduction; however a lengthy summary of the study which identifies the problem, purpose and rationale for the research study has been provided in the background. The introduction should give the reader a general sense of what the document is about, and preferably persuade the reader to continue reading. This prepares the reader for reading the rest of the document (Burns & Grove, 2001 p.636; Nieswiadomy, 2008 p.380; Stockhausen and Conrick, 2002).
Every animal on the planet is capable of communicating, be it verbally, physically, or possibly by some means yet discovered. Writing on the other hand is a form of communication exclusive to human beings (and maybe the occasional ape). Children are taught to read and write almost as soon as they can speak. Writing becomes a part of everyday life, and because of this it is easy to forget that writing "is a means of "communication [one] must consciously learn" (Heffernan and Lincoln 3). For this reason writing in college can be a challenge for even the most skilled of writers. While the basics of academic writing may seem like common knowledge, knowing them and understanding them can prove to be quite different. In the writing center it is our job to help writers take what they know about writing, and begin to understand it. Understanding is the basis for ...
There is a major difference in scholarly and popular sources. The major difference is that scholarly articles are written for other scholars in that particular field of work whereas a popular source is written for a general audience. Scholarly sources have undergone multiple peer-reviews before being published. A popular source is edited by an editor and is not helpful for support in academic research. I chose two articles based off of International Standards in the areas of Financial Reporting and Auditing. The academic article I chose was written in the Northwestern Journal of International Law and Business. The purpose of a scholarly source of an academic journal is prepared for other scholars

The process of completeing my research task taught me many valuable lessons. In compiling the literature review I learnt how to filter information, as well as how to use citations. The method and results section showed me how to transfer information from labels into suitable graphs and tables, in order to make comparisons and analysises. I learnt how to critically examine graphs and tables, and draw accurate and educated conclusions when completing the discussion section. Through this project, I also realised the importance of reflecting back on any limitations encountered inorder to learn from your mistakes, and find improvements for further research. In addition, I learnt how to reference sources correctly.
