Definition:

Biosafety level present different kinds of biocontainment safety measures that are used to segregate dangerous biological microbes in the laboratories. There are different biosafty levels ranges from the biosafety level 1 (BSL-1) to biosafety level 4 (BSL-4) and these are categories as lowest to high respectively .

Introduction and Background

Biosafety implemented different set of controlled principles, activities, advance techniques and organized practices that are used to prevent unintended and involuntary exposure to hazardous agents i.e. pathogens and toxics along with their accidental discharge/release. The term Biosecurity’ means the protection provided to the valuable biological materials by considering proper control and accountability in order to eliminate and restrict their unauthorized release ,diversion along with their access and misuse .

There are many unique and distinctive problems which can be found in the animal rooms during animal activities. These animal rooms are better than microbiological laboratories because due the nature of activities of the animals they can present unique hazardous i.e. pathogens and toxic agents that were not found in standard microbiological laboratories. Hazardous agents through aerosols may be generated by the Animals which will include animal bite and scratch. At times there is some other toxic agents’ zoonotic agent which may be infected.

Animal Biosafety Levels
S.No Animal Biosafety Level (ABSL) Practices Primary barriers
(Safety Equipment) Facilities (Secondary Barriers)
1  It includes those organisms that are not dangerous and cause infectious diseases.
 They have minimum potential hazards to the personnel and the environment.  It involves standard microbiological practices  No primary barrier
 Needed eye and face protection mask, coats and gloves  Bench/tool and sink required
2  It includes practices, advance procedures and equipments along with organized control with the facility of ABSL-1.
 This level includes moderate potential hazard agents which cause moderate risk for personnel and low risk for community.  It involves standard microbiological practices along with limited access
 Universal biohazard warning sign
 Instant precautions
 Medical surveillance policies  Primary barriers
 Physical containment Devices used for manipulation of agents that cause infectious materials i.e. through air and splashes
 Needed eye and face protection mask, coats and gloves
 It require biosafety cabinet one
 ABSL-1 and availability of autoclaves
3  Involves microbes which are infectious for both personnel and the environment.
 They cause high risk for the personnel and moderate risk for the environment.
 It includes practices, advance procedures and equipments along with organized control with the facility of ABSL-2.
They may cause potentially lethal disease via inhalation root of exposure.  It includes ABSL-2 practices and controlled access
 Decontamination of all contaminated waste
