Communication
Communication is a process of imparting or transferring thoughts from one entity to another either through language or writing or some other signs (Wrench, McCroskey & Richmond, 2008). Language and other methods of communication, which are appropriate in one semantic environment, are usually not utilized in another semantic environment. For example in playgrounds and sports, children use the expressions like “game plan” or “Captain of the ship” which cannot be used in a different semantic environment for example workplace. Thus language used in one semantic environment requires first “setting up the modes of discourse and consequently the modes of inquiry of the second” (Postman, 1984).
Nonverbal Communication
Many of the rules of discourse in a semantic environment are based on situational regulations of behavior. Rules of discourse in a specific situation are often based on nonverbal communication consists largely on gestures, especially by face and hands, that can add considerable power to messages. These nonverbal messages usually convey the feelings of the communicator more truthfully than do his words, because people have less awareness of their body language (Postman, 1984). Thus nonverbal communication can be classified and dependent on the environment, the behavior of the communicator and the physical characteristics of the communicator (Knapp & Hall, 2007).

Touch
Touch in communication imparts the feeling and behavior of the communicator and is very much dependent on the relationship between the communicators and the environment in which they are communicating (Knapp & Hall, 2007). Touch may include handshakes, kissing, slapping, and pat on a shoulder etc. (Knapp & Hall, 2007). Touch is an important gesture of nonverbal communication which depicts the physical intimacy, either sexual or platonic.
Nonverbal communication is the soul of a relationship and the people who are not very familier and conversant with nonverbal communication tools often face difficulties in establishing cordial relationship with other people.
Though Troy's actions toward his children are harsh and unfair, but this is not all Troy's fault. He was raised in a time when jazz music and African-Americans playing on professional sports teams just didn't happen. He was a product of his era just as his father before him. Parents can only raise their children the best way they know how, and for Troy this was all he had. As Troy told Cory “Who the hell say I got to like you?”, parents aren't forced to like their children. Sadly, Cory resented his father even after his death. We are all children, and we must learn not to resent our parents because of their actions, but to accept them and understand why they are the way they are. (Wilson 1304).
Troy is the son of an abusive father. His father was hardly around to raise him. When he was around, he made him do chores and if he didn’t do them he would beat him. One time, after Troy tied up the mule, just as his father told him to, he went off to the creek with a girl to “enjoy himself.” The mule got loose, and his father found out. His father came looking for him. When he found them at the creek, he had the leather mule straps; he started to beat Troy. Troy was naturally scared so he ran away. He looked back at his father and realized that his father didn’t care about beating him, he just wanted the girl. Troy came back; he ripped the straps out of his father’s hand. He then started to beat his father with them. His father, not afraid of Troy, beat up Troy. Troy was left there, his eyes were swelled shut. He didn’t know what to do. He couldn’t go back to his father’s house, so he went to another town 200 miles away. This is when Troy became a man at the age of 14.
Nonverbal behavior is channeled by norms and most of us abide by them without being aware of them. Physical appearance, gesture and body movement, face and eye behavior, vocal behavior, personal space, touch, scent/smell, and time are all forms of nonverbal communication behavior. Norms differ amongst various cultures, ethnic, and geographic groups. There are endless ways and forms to violate nonverbal norms, and by doing so can lead to a barrier in communication, which are problematic to distinguish.
