When tasked with the assignment of creating an event that correlates to University and fraternity values, ideas freely flowed in my head. Some were elusive, others were intangible, but hopefully the one I present today is both tangible and practical. As a youth, my parents, upon my request, sent me to a Jewish sleep away camp located in Missouri. This camp is a well-respected camp where young Jews go to grow as adolescents. When determining which activity would be best for Zeta Beta Tau (hereafter ZBT) and correlated to both UT and ZBT values the one activity that stuck in my mind was the ropes course. For those unfamiliar with the ropes course it is “a challenging outdoor personal development and team building activity which usually consists of high and/or low elements” (Wikipedia). The ropes course is a time tested method that builds trusts and respect among members, makes leaders out of the participants, and shows the integrity, responsibility, brotherly love, and intellectual awareness of those participating as well as growing said attributes.
Due to the potential dangers of high ropes, we would stick to the “Low” ropes course if implemented. The activities that take place at such an event are Cooperative Game, Group Initiative, and Trust-building games.
The cooperative game is “a fun activity designed to reduce inhibitions and break down barriers. These activities are often not based on a defined task but on a sequence of events. Users are often placed in positions where they are encouraged to try new things that may place them outside their normal comfort zones” (Wikipedia). Through this, as a group and as individuals we learn how to be responsible and discover things about ourselves and others that previously unknown ...

...articipates there would be no mandate that people attend outside of the members of the board. Due to financial reasons, we would only implement this if enough people decide to attend. Under the dream scenario of 100% attendance, the group leaders (we would divide into smaller groups due to the size of the fraternity but everybody will be doing the exact same program) will be the members of the executive board. Outside of the executive board the groups will be diverse in regards to grade level. It will be mandated that each and every group have at least one member from every grade level.
To recap the ropes course is a time tested method that builds trusts and respect among members, makes leaders out of the participants, and shows the integrity, responsibility, brotherly love, and intellectual awareness of those participating as well as growing said attributes.
Once I am a fully initiated member of the Fraternity I will attend chapter weekly. The entire pledge class bonds and learns about the Fraternity, ideals, and history together. Chi Omega also plans activities that helps us bond together as sisters, such a flag football against the other sororities, or even something as simple as ice cream out together. These activities bring us together as a discourse community very frequently. This year we had the largest pledge class in the history of the Sigma Zeta chapter at 24 girls. Every year there are two recruitment periods, one in the fall and the other in the spring. It is during these periods that the fraternity replenishes the members that went alumna with new
Every year students at an accredited university have a decision to join groups/activities. In many cases a lot of students choose to join either a fraternity or a
That standard of academic excellence pushes you to become a great student, “if students want to become affiliated with academic discourse communities, or even if they want to succeed in school, they have to make considerable sacrifices,” (Johns 326). Johns’ outline of success academic discourse communities is on point. Fraternities are academic communities along with social. Much sacrificed time has to be taken to be apart and contribute to fraternity, for example a leadership role. A fraternity offers many opportunities of leadership opportunities.
Greek organizations are debatably the most undervalued and misconceived aspect of college campuses. Most people don’t see the benefits that fraternities and sororities bring to college campuses and their communities. Some see these organizations as large beneficial clubs and others see them as potential problems. Many of the allegations put forth by individuals that discredit the benefits and good deeds done by Greek organizations are weak justifications for their removal from college campuses. Greek organizations provide campus communities with academically responsible students, philanthropic activities and increase community involvement.
However the members I am going to live with only lived in the fraternity house for two semesters (also violating the membership agreement) and the new members that are living in next year only plan to live in the house for two semesters, as well. Our chapter has adapted to the policy due to our circumstances we have found ourselves in. Our house only has space for 40 people and the fall new member classes are sizes up to 30 or more brothers and our recent spring class was 17. This leaves little space for any two classes to live in. If every member had to live in four semesters than we would not have space for the newest class to move in.
Among the many non-respectable rituals and ceremonies performed by these organizations, hazing is the number one reason why a number of students ha...
When they decided to end the game they all said that they would want to play again. The play observation illustrated Huizinga’s play detentions in terms of free activity, no material interest, own boundaries, and fixed rules. One person suggested to play hide and seek and the rest decided to join knowing that there is no material reward. The A team added their own rules in order to create their own boundaries. In addition, Eberle’s play framework elements of pleasure and strength were displayed by the game because each player demonstrated enjoyment during the game and they enhanced their strength by running quickly. The game also illustrated Brown’s play properties of play being voluntary, and how it diminishes consciousness of self and a desire to play again. Like stated before, every player decided to play at their own will no one forced them to. Moreover, each player did not care who played or how everyone looked like, no one felt self-conscious. Lastly, when the game ended each player said they would want to play
The theme the officer team came up with for this year was Be the Degree! “At 211° degrees, water is hot; at 212°, water boils.” One degree makes all the difference, just like one person can make all the difference. We advocated the importance of going the “extra degree” and making a difference in their life, as well as the lives of people around them. There are many types of leaders; for example, there are leaders who like to express themselves by speaking or leaders who silently guide others towards the right path. Our goal was to motivate our student body to try their best at school and get involved in extra-curricular activities and clubs. In my opinion, we
...t the top, but to raise the bar higher for those who are reaching for the top. The men of this fraternity set an example of achievement; they show that being the best isn’t enough. That is why I want to be a part of this fraternity, because I want to be set the example, I want to show that being okay isn’t good enough, and I want to show that being an African-American male, I will not be hindered by stereotypes or any other preconceptions. Being able to be a part of this organization that will push me to be the man I can be, rather than pull me down to a lower level; will grant me the opportunity to be able to show that others can make it, just like I did. Kappa Alpha Psi Inc. is the organization I wish to represent, progress, and be a member of because their objectives and goals, represent what I stand for, and I couldn’t see myself joining any other fraternity.

Cooperation is working to get her as a team to achieve something and knowing that together you can achieve more. It is about putting aside your thought or opinions against that of others. For example, I was on the prom committee along with several others last year. We had decided to have a Masquerade prom which turned out trickery than planned. The first day went well but we were all very tired and had to come back early in the morning. The next day didn 't go so well... We were all against each other 's ideas even the teachers and we finally sat down as friends and decided if we didn 't have a little team work and cooperation in this we were never going to get it done. Slowly it started coming together. One person wanted a mask there, we would put it there, and if someone didn 't think it looked ok they would add a slight tilt to it. So with enough cooperation from everyone we achieved more than just prom we achieved something
From the friendships they can make that will last a lifetime, to the distinct memories they have of campfire traditions, camp is laced with immeasurable meaning. The skills that children learn and practice at camp can become a part of their identity, and may even grow into passions that they will continue to pursue as an adult. Whether they want it or not, the songs with constantly haunt them throughout the years and though they claim to hate it, they secretly enjoy the reminder of summer fun and adventure. One thing camp taught me that I find of value today, is to say “yes!” to adventures and working with my team to accomplish outrageously fun challenges and

In its simplest form, cooperation may involve only two people who work together towards a common goal. Two college students working together to complete a laboratory experiment, or two inter-city youths working together to protect their 'turf' from violation by outsiders are examples. In these cases, solidarity between the members is encouraged and they share together the reward of their cooperation. Social satisfaction is achieved by a group of people working together or doing activities together. Even though cooperation isn’t that practical with our people in our own society it can be found within the youths involved in sports and other recreational activities. Cooperation within students in schools as mentioned as an example, is practiced on a regular basis during group discussions and group presentations. But speaking about cooperation and society together, cooperation is very essential for society to continue grow stronger and a good living residence for
Over the years these amazing groups of men, also known as fraternities, have been given a bad name due to actions of a few individuals. This has led people to begin rumors and take on a poor perspective on Fraternities in multiple aspects. People see Fraternities as murders and menaces to society when they are much more than that. Fraternities are known for their helpfulness being dedicated to the community and the school. Always finding a way to give back and change the reputation they are known for. With so many different Organizations and chapters the possibilities are endless.
