Public Relations Interview Effective marketing strategies in health care are essential to the success of the organization. Marketing promotes the hospital’s services by endorsing its clinical expertise, its technology, its achievements, and its commitment to the community that it serves. The role of the Public Relations (PR) professional is an essential part of daily hospital operations to establish and maintain relationships within the community as well as deal with challenges and opportunities that face the organization. Public relations are more complex than dealing with the media during a crisis. It involves maintaining solid relationships within the facility and within the community. The following interview with the facility’s Director of Marketing and Public Relations official discusses the product and services that the hospital provides to the public. The interview reviews the role of the PR official, interactions with facility stakeholders and the residents of the community, the hospital’s PR plan, and the challenges that face this professional internally and externally. Christ Hospital was founded in 1872 in Jersey City, NJ and is currently operated by the for-profit organization Care Point Health also known as Hudson Hospital OpCo. Christ Hospital is a community healthcare provider that exists to promote and improve health of residents of Jersey City, NJ. Christ Hospital is a 376-bed acute care facility that offers a full spectrum of services including oncology radiation center, and is staffed by over 500 physicians. As part a family of three local hospitals owned and operated by Care Point Health, Christ Hospital shares some administrative and operational functions with the Bayonne Medical Center and Hoboken University Medical Center, all located in Hudson County, NJ. Just like Christ Hospital, Bayonne Medical Center is an acute-care facility with 278-bed capacity and is known for its cardiovascular services, whereas Hoboken University Medical Center is a general medical and surgical hospital with 364 beds known for its maternity services. All three were acquired by the Care Point Health in the period of five years and have transformed themselves from being market-place competitors to members of the same organization. This has significantly affected their operational strength, and in particular crisis management planning. In the course of regular business, as “sister” organizations, the three hospitals can call on each other for more specialized services to complement their existing capabilities to service their patients better. This networking support becomes crucial in their crisis management planning.
However, I found that community outreach is a weakness that could over time prove to be problematic. As a single mother of four young children, I was under the misconception that Children’s only treat very young children. I believe in part this is due to the lack of marketing that targets teen and adolescent children. The hospital would do well to do more targeted marketing to single mothers and young mothers alike. The offer a wide array of services that mothers would find to be beneficial if they were properly marketed. An increase in social media presence would help to connect Children’s with the said

What is Public Relations (PR)? PR is difficult to define because it encompasses so many areas and today has developed into a multi-million dollar industry influencing all aspects of our lives (Adams et al, 1999). However, it is important to be able to compare and contrast the various definitions in order to have a complete understanding of what public relations is and how it is used. The public is a large population to consider, making it easier to understand why it is so difficult to define PR. Along with a large population come many perceptions, beliefs, ideas, and opinions, all influences on PR. I define public relations as the act/s used by individuals, corporations, and groups to influence ones opinions and/or decisions about a product, idea, person/s, company/s, etc. and the public. Robert L. Heath defines PR as functions of management/supervisors that foster an organization's ability to strategically listen to, appreciate, and respond to those persons who's mutually beneficial relationships with the organization are necessary if it is to achieve its missions and values (Health, 2007)'.

Seitel, Fraser P. (2007). The Practice of Public Relations (10 Ed.). Upper Saddle River, NJ: Pearson Prentice Hall.
Public relations is everywhere today. It is a practice that has become an important aspect of any business venture. Whether an organization is not for profit, for profit, or governmental, they still need and desire to communicate their purpose within the community and public relations allows this to happen. There are several publics in which the PR practitioner must correspond with and each requires a different means of communication. Internal publics are inside the organizations such as clerks, managers, and stockholders. "External publics are those not directly connected to the organization: the press, government, educators, customers, suppliers, and the community" (Seitel, 2004). Each public plays a key role in the PR of the organization. The many functions of PR can also be categorized based on what purpose they serve the organization.
