Before my first semester of college began, I thought that if possible failure should be avoided. I believed that failure was not good for me because it would only show my weaknesses. The first day of English class, we learned that we would be talking about our failures throughout this semester and that we would be able to work with our failure and learn about the quality of it. At first that was a little scary to me because for the past few years I ignored my failures and only focused on my triumphs. As the semester went on, I learned that my failures as a classmate, as a group member, and as an individual would allow me to be a better student. If I were to grade the quality of my own failure I would give myself an A.
During this semester, as a class we worked on three challenges. With these challenges, we also had to do quizzes, peer reviews, short videos, and readings. The course seemed to meet most of my needs in order for me to succeed with the challenges. An article by Robert I. Sutton of the Harvard Business Review, talks about a method of learning from failures. Dr. Everett Piper describes in the article ‘This is Not a Day Care. It’s a University!’ that students who do not repent their sins can not learn from them. In the speech ‘This is Water’, by David Wallace he explains how learning to think is in a way knowing what to think about. Since failure is truly more common than success, one’s question for life should not be if you have problems, but how you are going to deal with your problems. Philosophically speaking, there is no achievement without failure. To even imply that it might be possible to achieve anything without failure, gives people the wrong impression. The person construct theory introduced by George Kelly, Psychologist, says that in order to know success and its definition we must also know failure and its definition (INSERT CITATION). One can’t have proper perspective without the other. Before I enrolled in English 101 there was a great deal of unanswered questions that I had regard to what it takes to end up distinctly as a successful writer. Throughout my high school experience, my English class never served as my strong point and constantly got myself frustrated and confounded. Throughout my companions, I heard positive input on English 101 class and I thought it was going to be solely about bettering our grammatical skills and composing various papers. Due to that I was exceptionally energized and excited for this class because I never had an instructor before who really helped me through my writing processes. But as English 101 class progressed on, it introduced me to different types of papers that I wasn’t confident enough to compose. From informative synthesis, summary, and peer review, I have learned how to appropriately and effectively compose each different kind of papers. As a result, this class was able to develop my abilities at an extremely high level where I could compose a good paper without much help.
Success and failure seem to be pretty distinct opposites, but many times the differences between success and failure aren’t as obvious as we may think them to be. Sometimes a failure can be turned into a success if you are willing to look back at them, and are open to learning from them. Many times, one’s attitude toward a failure can determine whether or not anything is learned from it. Those who remain upbeat and positive after a failure may be able to get something out of it, but those who just don’t think about it and ignore it won’t get anything from it.
I concluded my 8th grade year with 9 a's and 5 b's, contrarily my 9th grade report card included 5 f's and 3 d's. "Your mistakes do not define who you are, you are your possibilities." - Oprah Winfrey. This quote reflects my high school journey because though I've made innumerable mistakes throughout high school thus far, and continue to make mistakes by not prioritizing my education, I refuse to give up and I will not let my mistakes make me.
Failure isn’t always something you have control of or have the ability to predict. Failure seems to happen at the worst of times; however we need to accept it, because you cannot always win. My greatest failure would be tearing my anterior cruciate ligament (ACL), my junior year in a lacrosse game, through no fault of my own in which my body physically failed me, but it truly changed my aspect of life in multiple ways.
When looking back over the course as an entity, I enjoyed the videos and reflections. I feel I have learned the most through this homework assignment. The videos gave me the opportunity to be able to put the techniques I learned to action. I loved how I was able to self reflect on my video and learn more about myself as a counselor through this. Failure is something in life that everyone is afraid of. Failure is apart of everyone’s life at some point whether it’s in a sport, at school, or even just a part of daily life. Failure can be in taken in two ways, one; you can take the failure in as a challenge and push to strive better and never want to fail again, or two; take failure in bad and not want to try harder and just give up without after failing once. Some of the richest or even successful people in life have had failures. The famous basketball player Michael Jordan, when he was a sophomore he tried out for the varsity basketball team and didn’t make it. But if it wasn’t for that failure in his life he would of have never tried his hardest to end up becoming one of the best NBA players in history and have one of the most successful shoe brands. That’s just one of the many successful people who had failures in life.
Failure is apart of life, it can make or break a person. When a person experiences a type of failure it is now up to them to see how they respond. They can choose the high road, and become a stronger person for it. Then they can choose the low road, the easy way out. The easy way out is never a good choice. It can lead only to destruction. The high road is the right choice to take when responding to failure. It will lead down a path of success. Jessica Lahey’s article, “When Success Leads to Failure” is an article that shows how kids are experiencing failure. Lahey says that, “these kids have a fear for failure, and that they have given up natural loves for learning. They are scared of not being successful”(Lahey). The truth is life is hard there will be failure. There is nothing in this world that comes easy to anyone.
Over the period of time that I was in this course, I thought it would be a very simple and easy to finish class. But as time went on, I found myself to be demanded more of what I think, what I feel, what must be relied on my ability to understand the concepts and conventions of not only the essays, but of what goes on in the writers mind when writing.
In terms of Personal Development I feel that the course has helped me to develop the skills I need to improve my grades, and to build my confidence.
