Racial Profiling: A Necessary Evil

1090 Words3 Pages

Racial profiling is a practice where people of color and of certain religions are disproportionately targeted for investigation and enforcement of various laws. It is used all around the globe in order to find and persecute criminals, terrorists, contrabandists, and others breaking the law. In some countries, racial profiling is completely lawful while in other countries it is considered a violation of human rights. For instance, in the United Sates, racial profiling is often considered to be a form of discrimination and is not accepted well by the society because it goes against many principles of the Constitution. Yet, racial profiling is a necessary evil which will help the U.S. (and any other country) to prevent devastating terrorist attacks, illegal import and distribution of drugs, monetary machinations, and many other unlawful and inhumane actions.

The range of responses to Racial Profiling spans from strong approval to outright disdain, this can easily be explained by the nation’s respect and admiration of democracy and the American way. Those who think that Racial Profiling limits personal liberties and promotes discrimination are, of course, somewhat correct. On the one hand, the practice of Racial Profiling can be considered an unjustifiable practice and an affront to the promise of racial equality. It is well known the after September 11, 2011, people of color, members of Arab, Muslim, and South Asian communities had a lot of unwanted attention from specialized government agencies. Another troubling manifestation of the Racial Profiling policy can be seen in the federal government’s inspiration of unprecedented raids of immigrant, usually Latino, workplaces and communities by local law enforcement. Overall, Racial Profiling and like policies prove to be fairly effective and unlike so many people’s convictions – completely legal, and considering the security situation in the U.S. it should be used in many security aspects. True Racial Profiling is in no way to discriminate against a certain group or religion. The policy is based on purely logical assumptions regarding various ethnicities and religions (if people from Latin America are often seen distributing narcotics, it is only logical to pay more attention to them that to other nationalities during raids and searches). And even though many citizens are discouraged and feel that they have been deprived of their freedoms, the public should realize and accept the fact that the Racial Profiling program exists for the sole reason of keeping them and the U.S. safe and prosperous.
