Pro Legalization of Marijuana

“Millions have died from cigarettes, yet they’re freely sold at stores. Alcohol has been the root cause of countless deaths… yet it can still be purchased. Every 19 minutes, someone in the US dies from prescription overdose. Who has died from marijuana? No one.” (Archer) Marijuana legalization is one of the most controversial topics of debate today. The thought that marijuana should be legalized is a smart one. It can help medical patients, decrease the crime rate, and help the economy. Humans have used marijuana for thousands of years. Early on, it was used for fabric and food. It was the primary crop during George Washington’s presidency. Also, during the 1840s it was used as a medicine and sold in pharmacies. In 1913, the prohibition of marijuana began. Despite being a profitable crop and a helpful heath product, illegalization occurred. Innocent people were criminalized. The act of prohibition should be reversed and marijuana should be legalized.
Marijuana has less harmful side effects than two popular legal drugs, tobacco and alcohol. Even abuse of caffeine, found in many soft drinks, may have a more negative effect on the human body. Around fifty thousand people die every year from alcohol. There are around 400,000 deaths from tobacco every year. Yet, there has never been one recorded death from marijuana. In a study posted in the Journal of American Medical Association, marijuana smoking can increase lung capacity. Major health benefits, decriminalization of otherwise normal citizens, and billions of dollars would be effects of legalization. Some people may ask, why should I care? Well, if a family member ever develops AIDS or cancer, there is a new alternative that’s proven to help with the condition. We will also be taxed less because of less government spending on marijuana convictions. We will be decriminalized and allowed the same freedoms with marijuana that are allowed with alcohol or tobacco. Finally, our government will climb its way out of debt by taxing the plant. Marijuana legalization could greatly improve our country as a whole.
