Marketing Ethics
The question of whether or not marketing is completely unethical is the
question most critics of marketing seem to be focusing their attention on.
Ethics provide the basis for deciding whether a particular action is morally
good or morally bad (Britt 553). But, each individual develops different
opinions, moral standards, and values. So, marketers will deal with similar
issues differently because there is no "correct" way to handle any given issue.
Marketers face various types of ethical issues in their everyday marketing
activities. Such marketing activities that require marketing managers to
utilize their moral values ethically are advertising, packaging and labeling,
and global marketing.
"Advertising is the most criticized of all micro-marketing activities
(McCarthy 643)." What is considered as unfair or deceptive advertising is very
difficult to pinpoint, because times have changed and continue to change on a
day to day basis. What one person may consider unfair or deceptive may not be
unfair or deceptive to another person. There are no clear cut guidelines for
marketing manager's to go by, so they must utilize their own judgement based on
their own moral standards. But, in the United States their is an administrative
agency that has the power to control unfair or deceptive business practices.

Someone once said, “Maturity is not measured by age. It’s an attitude built by experience.” (SearchQuotes). These experiences help advance maturity and prepare adolescence for adulthood. In coming of age literature, the key is to evolve an authentic character through different incidents. The Titanic was one of three 'Olympic Class' liners commissioned by the White Star Line to be built at the Harland and Wolff shipyard in Belfast. These ships were the industrial marvels of their age. Titanic was to be the biggest, fastest and most luxurious ship yet, and was supposed to be unsinkable. "I took passage on the Titanic for I thought it would be a safe steamship and I had heard it could not sink.” (Passenger Margaret Devaney). Titanic had four elevators, a heated swimming pool, a gym, two libraries, and two barber shops, which was very impressive for a ship of that era. This extraordinary ship was nicknamed “Ship of Dreams”. On board there were suites for many different types of passengers which included millionaires, silent movie stars, school teachers and emigrants, in search of a better life in the North America. Harry has spent all summer waiting to hear news about Lord Voldemort, a evil wizard that Harry saw return the year before, but nobody believes him. One evening after listening to news ,he decides to go for a walk. He then sees his cousin, who he lives with and hates. They then get in a fight and Harry pulls out his wand and at that exact moment two dementors attack them. Dudley thinks Harry is attacking him so he punches Harry. Harry then heroically saves them both by producing a patronus and driving away the dementors.
But all of a sudden it gets changed to a very aggressive and Uncle Vernon yells across the table “THAT'S THE THIRD TIME THIS WEEK, IF YOU DON'T SHUT YOUR STUPID OWL UP!!!”. Things calmed down after that until harry responds back with a statement and his uncle gets offensive again. Things are very calm again after he gets to school with very little docile attitude. Malfoy harry’s rival is still very sulking throughout the story. Things got pretty tragic when writing started appearing on the walls and people were getting part petrified. When Harry got in the chamber and had to fight Voldemort again he defeated him but ended up in a very critical condition, if it wasn't for Fawkes dumbledore's bird harry probably wouldn't have made it saving genny or even himself. A company, Harland and Wolff, out of Belfast, Ireland were commissioned to build this miraculous ship (United States). It talks about women’s magazines and how they include so many adds for weight loss and how many girls own Barbie dolls. The piece also talks about how all of these adds effect people and to what extent they effect people. The author of this piece is the director of Research and Outreach for About- Face and has a doctorate in Clinical Psychology. Based on those facts alone I feel that this piece is very credible and contains truthful information. Limitations of this piece include only having one side and not pertaining specifically to ethics in advertising. I will be able to utilize this piece mostly because it contains a lot of statistics and good information to help me in the angle I am going to take on how ethics in advertising affect women. This piece is very different from all of my sources because it does not pertain quite so directly to the topic I am writing on. (190)
