Is Media Violence To Blame?
Today, there is more violence on TV, in video games and in music than ever before. Many times, media violence is linked with kids and teenagers committing violent acts. This is an attempt by parents and critics to eliminate violence in the media. Although, many think media violence is a cause of violence among children, they should be looking at what else causes violence.
Many people believe media violence is not good and that it makes kids aggressive. Laboratory studies found that children who see violent programs, are more likely to be more aggressive than those who watch non-violent programs (“Doesn’t Cause Violence”). When people hear that, they believe children should not watch violent television shows. The problem with studies like these, they take place in labs so they cannot be applied to the real world (“Doesn’t Cause Violence”). Also, this is just a short-term response to watching a violent TV show. This does not mean that they will be a violent person. Correlation studies show that watching violence at a young age affects them as teens (“Doesn’t Cause Violence”). The parents believe as teenagers they will be violent for the rest of their lives. Just because watching television programs is linked to aggressive behavior, does not mean the TV show causes violence (“Doesn’t Cause Violence”). If parents are really worried about what their children are watching, than they should be more responsible and monitor what their kids are watching.

First, we will start with Goodman Brown. He is the main character in Nathaniel Hawthorne’s short story titled “Young Goodman Brown”. “Hawthorne could not escape the influence of Puritan society” (McCabe). I think that Hawthorne’s own past is and complications are reveled in his story about Goodman Brown. I believe that Goodman Brown has had a rough past and is trying to reach beyond his past in order to reach heaven. Goodman has some major problems with his wife, Faith, and everyone else in his community. I think that he is seeing everyone as perfect people, but he is having impure thoughts about himself and his past. In order to deal with these problems within himself, he is making up that everyone has this awful bad side. When he goes into the forest, he believes he is talking to the devil with looks much like his grandfather. The devil is feeding him bad thoughts about everyone he knows, even his own father and his wife Faith. Next, I believe that Goodman Brown has had a rough past and in order for him to overcome this within himself he must search for attention. The start is when Young Goodman Brown takes a stand against the devil and refuses to go any further along with the devil. The devil ends up leaving Goodman Brown at a stump in which he sits. A few moments pass and Young Goodman Brown heard “hoof tramps and the voices of riders”(7). It would turn out to be the minister and Deacon Gookin, who passed Goodman Brown on the path as he hid from them behind a bush. Goodman Brown finds out that the two men are not completely devoted to Christianity as he had thought they should be. He heard that the minister and Deacon Gookin are both on their way to the devils ceremony. This is very ironic because the minister and deacon are supposed to be your role models. The Deacon Gookin is the teacher who would have taught Goodman Brown when he was a child, and once Goodman Brown was older he would move on to the teachings of the minister. Desiree is a lady who completely relied on her husband for any type of support. Desiree became powerless when Armand rejected her and the child when he noticed the infant’s change in skin color. Without having Armand in Desiree's life, she had low self-esteem and did not have the will to live anymore. For the most part there was a large amount of racism in the story as well as the feeling that ladies too are not equivalent to men.
Reflecting upon interprofessional education (IPE), hands on experience is vital for health care students across the Faculty of Health Sciences so that they may continue to develop better communication skills, enhance performance and develop conflict resolution capability in a team situation. Lorde appeals to the reader’s pathos by subconsciously creating empathy for Lorde as she struggles with her parents not being truthful about foundational aspect of mid 1900’s American society – racism. Moreover, the use of situational irony is shrewdly expressed in Lorde’s interpretation of her family’s D.C. trip: “…the waitress was white, and the counter was white, and the ice cream I never ate in Washington DC was white and the white heat and the white pavement and the white stone monuments of my first Washington summer made me sick to my stomach…” (para. 24). Employing vivid imagery of how Lorde perceives her recently awoken sense of actual reality, she is able to express her understanding of the displeasing disparity between superior Whites and inferior Blacks. Unlike her jaded parents, Lorde expected the United States’ capital to uphold the same virtues it was founded upon – freedom, equality, liberty. Ironically, she finds Washington D.C. to be filled with inherent discrimination. Consequently the reasoning for Lorde’s blatant irony in her essay’s title: “The Fourth of July”. July 4th is supposed to represent the day the American founders broke away from an oppressive British rule to mark the birth of a free land. Paradoxically, they created a regime that was was more oppressive than the British. The racist foundation of the new nation is not exposed until the understanding of Thomas Jefferson’s implication of the phrase “all men are created equal” in the Constitution. In the short story, “Fourth of July”, Audre Lord transmits the main message of how one should resist and retaliate when afflicted to prejudice. Lorde displays the message of prejudice early in the story when she describes the complications Phyllis had trying to get to Washington D.C. with her high school senior class, just because she is a different skin color as the others. Lorde writes “Phyllis’s high school senior class trip had been to Washington, but the nuns had given her back her deposit in private, explaining to her that the class, all of whom were white, except Phyllis, would be staying in a hotel where Phyllis ‘Would not be happy,’ meaning, Daddy explained to her, also in private, that they did not rent rooms to Negroes. ‘We will
At the beginning of his journey, Goodman Brown’s will and pride were both embedded in the belief that he was a pious man. Goodman’s pride in piety evidently fails him, as he discovers that his faith was based on the principles of individuals who had sworn allegiance to the devil. This deplorable truth destroyed his conviction, and in this sense the devil prevailed against Goodman Brown.
The association between light and darkness played a major role in the outcome of this story. Desiree the wife of Armand was always associated with things of lightness. After Desiree was recovering from just given birth to their son she laid on the couch in her “soft white muslins and lace” (Valencia Community College). When Desiree confronts her husband about the race of their child Desiree skin pigmentation is whiter than her husbands. Desiree shows Armand the letter from Valmonde, the book says she was resembled a stone image white and motionless. In October when Desiree was abandoned Armand she left still wearing the white thin garment and slippers. Armand and the baby were always associated with darkness throughout the story. Armand skin complexion was darker than his wife’s. The story also describes Armand face as being dark and handsome. Although Armand truly loved Desiree, his love wasn’t stronger than protecting his family’s status. He knew from the beginning that it was he who was not white. Hoping that his child would not come out black, he still took precautions by marrying a woman with an unknown origin to put the blame on. He hated himself for what he truly was and he was not going to let anyone know his secret and have that kind of power over him. It was never Desiree’s fault and she ended up suffering when it was really Armand’s doing.
The World Health Organization (2010) defines interprofessional collaboration in health care as occurring “when multiple health workers from different professional backgrounds provide comprehensive services by working with patients, their families, carers and communities to deliver the highest quality of care across settings” (p. 7) and IPE as occurring “when two or more professions learn about, from and with each other to enable effective collaboration and improve health outcomes” (p. 7). What I find most difficult about interprofessional care is the professional hierarchy that is often in place. When physicians have a say in a patient, other members usually do not question it or try to challenge it because that physician might not agree with it or because of their level of education. When I think of team, I think of it as if everyone is equal and anyone can state what they think is right or wrong in any situation. If physicians are not approachable or open to other ideas, it may be hard to have an equal balance of power in an interprofessional team. Another difficulty or disadvantage I see to an interprofessional team is understanding everyone’s roles in the team. I am assuming that as time goes on, everyone becomes aware of what each team member does for a patient, but I could also assume that some members put other responsibilities on your plate. For example, if there is a case where a mom is suspected of child abuse and the nurse witnesses it, it would make sense for the nurse to report it because they were a witness and mandated reporter. I have talked to my supervisor at my internship and she says that nurses usually do not report to CPS because they instead let the social worker know in order for the social worker to make the report. I assume it is because nurses have a lot patients to see during their shifts and making a CPS report could take some
