The very essence of money creates an urge in human nature to obtain it and have an excess of it. When people come into wealth and begin rising on the social ladder, they usually become corrupted, and compromise their personal values. In the novels, Great Expectations and The Great Gatsby, the protagonists, Pip and Jay Gatsby respectively, believe their wealth is used for the common good, but in reality many values are being compromised. Pip and Gatsby both utilize their money in an attempt to bring the women they love into their lives. Along the way toward achieving their goal, they violate ethics, which, in turn, change them as people.
Despite the two novels possessing differences, they coincide in many aspects. When Pip acquires the money from the unknown benefactor, he moves away under Jaggers guidance and seldom returns to his hometown. In the beginning, his reasons for coming back were to visit Joe, Biddy, and Miss Havisham, but eventually he changes and seeing the people previously so important to him appears to become a chore. This is ironic because, before, he looked up to Joe, and regarded him as a father, now he refuses to see him on account of Joe being a common blacksmith. This is one of the first changes that we see in Pip after his knowledge that he will become educated. Pip’s entire reason for becoming a gentleman is to attract Estella, and make her return the feelings of love that he holds for her. Ultimately, it appears that Pip is willing to cast away his old life and friends, to become a gentleman and obtain Estella. This perfectly illustrates an immense change in Pip when he compromises his beliefs to accumulate money, stature and, inevitably, Estella.

As a young man, Jay Gatsby was poor with nothing but his love for Daisy. He had attempted to woe her, but a stronger attraction to money led her to marry another man. This did not stop Gatsby’s goal of winning this woman for himself though, and he decided to improve his life anyway he could until he could measure up to Daisy’s standards. He eventually gained connections in what would seem to be the wrong places, but these gave him the opportunity he needed to "get rich quick." Gatsby’s enormous desire for Daisy controlled his life to the point that he did not even question the immorality of the dealings that he involved himself in to acquire wealth. Eventually though, he was able to afford a "castle" in a location where he could pursue Daisy effectively. His life ambition had successfully moved him to the top of the "new money" class of society, but he lacked the education of how to promote his wealth properly. Despite the way that Gatsby flaunted his money, he did catch Daisy’s attention. A chaotic affair followed for a while until Daisy was overcome by pressures from Gatsby to leave her husband and by the realization that she belonged to "old money" and a more proper society.

To a good number of people, money is their personal king, their ruler, their everything. Money is their motivation, and their ambition revolves entirely around it. They are entranced by its brightness, dazzled by its brilliance. Such people can be found in F. Scott Fitzgerald’s novel The Great Gatsby, in which money plays a central role and is the driving force behind many significant events.
The Mole People by Jennifer Toth was my book of choice when I first glimpsed at the title. My first thoughts about the title were homeless people living in poverty and trying to survive. Homeless people have always intrigued me when it comes to their lifestyle. How can someone live like that? When I visit New York, Philadelphia, or anywhere populated I always spot a few homeless people walking around or sitting down with a sign. When I stare at them all I feel is pity and gratitude that I have a home as I proceed to walk ignoring their presence. But as I look back I have muddled thoughts about the person I just walked past. Who are they? How did they become homeless? Do they need help? They are the forgotten ones of society, left to beg on the streets as we live comfortably in our homes. Home is where the heart is, but when that is taken from you, what do these people have? The Mole People is a book about the lives of the homeless and their struggle against society and themselves.
The grandmother lives in Georgia with her son, her daughter-in law, and her grandchildren. In the beginning of the story the family is getting ready to go to Florida. The grandmother does not want to go, instead she wants to go to Tennessee to visit relatives. This is an example of where the grandmother is just thinking about herself and that she is not actually “good”. She wants the family to go to Tennessee just for for her own needs. She also does not want to go because there is a man who has escaped from prison and she read that he is making his way towards Florida, “Here this fellow that calls himself the Misfit is aloose from the Federal Pen and headed toward Florida and you read here what it says he did to those people.” (O’Connor 1042) The day of the trip the grandmother is the first one to be ready, this way she is able to bring the cat along. She does not want to leave the cat behind because “he would miss her too much.” (O’Connor 1043) By this comment we see that she thinks she is the most important person in the family, having to bring whatever she wants. When the family is leaving, everyone is in comfortable traveling clothes except the grandmother who dresses formally. She had on a "navy blue straw sailor hat with a bunch of white violets on the brim a...
“Cinderella finds the perfect man and lives in a castle the rest of her life, so why can’t I?” Society uses fairytales to make children think that love is perfect, but the sad reality is that true love has flaws. Many women across the world have heard of Plan B or the morning after pill which is an over-the-counter contraceptive pill. As a woman who believes in the right to choose but also values life, many believe this could be the answer to many controversial issues in the United States today. Plan B is currently sold in the US to help women prevent pregnancy within 72 hours after unprotected sexual intercourse. It prevents implantation of the fertilized egg to the uterus by altering its lining. Which any egg has to be implanted for the fetus to grow. This pill is not use or attended for abortion and does not harm the fetus if accidentally taken in early pregnancy. It has no impact on ectopic pregnancies, which is when the fetus grows outside the uterus wall. It has become the standard method used up to this day in most countries. Plan B is simply a way for women who are not ready to be mothers to have a second chance. Although Plan B has been available in the United States for years, it can now be sold over-the-counter to women 18 and older or if prescribed by a doctor 11 and up.
As Pip grows throughout the novel, he develops and matures from a young boy that doesn’t know what to do to a young man who has a great outlook on life. In the first stage of Pip's life he is young and does not understand what it means to be a gentleman and how it can affect his life. During the first stage of Pips life, he only wants 3 things. He wants education, wealth, and social advancement. These three wishes are mostly so he can impress Estella, who is the symbol of this first stage. Pip does not want to be just a blacksmith like Joe. He wants to be intelligent and considered a person of high importance. At the end of this stage he moves to London and begins to have a different outlook on his future.

The Great Gatsby set in the glistening and glittering world of wealth and glamour of 1920s Jazz Age in America. However, the story of the poor boy who tried to fulfill the American Dream of living a richer and fuller life ends in Gatsby’s demise. One of the reasons for the tragedy is the corrupting influence of greed on Gatsby. As soon as Gatsby starts to see money as means of transforming his fantasy of winning Daisy’s love into reality, his dream turns into illusion. However, other characters of the novel are also affected by greed. On closer inspection it turns out that almost every individual in the novel is covetous of something other people have. In this view, the meaning of greed in the novel may be varied The greed is universally seen as desire for material things. However, in recent studies the definition of “greed” has come to include sexual greed and greed as idolatry, understood as fascination with a deity or a certain image (Rosner 2007, p. 7). The extended definition of greed provides valuable framework for research on The Great Gatsby because the objects of characters’ desires can be material, such as money and possessions, or less tangible, such as love or relationship.
“Hyperemesis gravidarum is a relatively rare coniditon, occurring in about 0.3% to 2% of all pregnancies” (Davidson, London, &Ladewig, 2012). It is described as a condition in which nausea and vomiting are so severe that they affect both the mother’s nutritional and hydration status. It is still unknown what specifically causes hyperemesis gravidarum, but it is suggested that the levels of hCG and other pregnancy hormones play a role. Signs and symptoms that the illness is in fact hyperemesis gravidarum, and not just “morning sickness”, include not being able to keep any food down, lightheadedness or fainting, electrolyte imbalances, weight loss, and dehydration. According to Davidson, London, and Ladwig, “The diagnostic criteria for hyperemesis include a history of intractable vomiting in the first half of pregnancy, dehydration, ketonuria, and a weight loss of 5% of prepregnancy weight” (Davidson, London, & Ladewig, ...
“To deny people their right to human rights is to challenge their very humanity. To impose on them a wretched life of hunger and deprivation is to dehumanize them. But such has been the terrible fate of all black persons in our country under the system of apartheid (“In Nelson Mandela’s own words”). Nelson Mandela was a moral compass symbolizing the struggle against racial oppression. Nelson Mandela emerged from prison after twenty-seven years to lead his country to justice. For twenty-seven years he sat in a cell because he believed in a country without apartheid, a country with freedom and human rights. He fought for a country where all people were equal, treated with respect and given equal opportunity. Nelson Mandela looms large in the actions of activists and politicians. He inspired music and movies, and swayed the mind of powerful leaders. Making him an influential person who affected American culture.
Nelson Mandela is one of the greatest ethical and political leaders in recent history. Nelson Mandela dedicated his life to the fight against the racial oppression of the apartheid regime in South Africa. In doing so, he became the first democratically chosen black president of South Africa. Nelson Mandela’s life is a blue print for the development of a leader who fought against discrimination and aimed to build fairness and justice, and by doing so, acquired the ultimate achievement: equality for South Africa.
" calm, patient determination to reclaim this country as your own, and now the joy that we can loudly proclaim from the rooftops--Free at last! Free at last! ... This is a time to heal the old wounds and build a new South Africa." Nelson Mandela fought his entire life. Nelson Mandela fought a fight for civil rights in South Africa on the streets and behind the prison walls. Even after 27 years behind those walls Mandela maintained his dignity and rose to be the first Black President of South Africa.
