The Importance of Nutrition and Sleeping Habits In The Classroom
Having good nutrition and sleeping habits is very important for education. It is important for children and adolescents to perform well in the classroom so that they get the most out of their education. Having poor sleeping habits or poor eating habits can have many harmful effects on a child’s classroom performance. If children have good eating habits as well as good sleeping habits they will perform better and be able to live up to their potential.
Good nutrition is very important for children in all areas of their life but it is a key factor in how they perform in the classroom. One study showed that “taller more healthy children have higher levels of verbal development” and healthier children have “positively associated performance on reading, spelling, and arithmetic tests” (conceptual). Classroom tests are a very good indicator of how a child performs in school. The study shows that children with good nutrition have done better than children with health problems or who are under-nourished. Another study correlates with the first in showing that “children who had more adequate diets scored higher on the cognitive battery than those with less adequate intake” ( ).
Good nutrition helps cognitive function which is defined as “the ability to learn categories, to process and structure information, and to learn and react to social and environmental cues. Cognitive function also includes the ability to ask appropriate questions and provide appropriate answers with in a given environment and to identify and solve relevant problems” (Cline). Cognitive function is important for good performance in the classroom because if a child cannot convey t...

...nd teachers would be able to get more accomplished with their students during the day. Studies show that there is a direct correlation between good sleeping habits in children and increased learning ability. Children who get adequate sleep have better cognitive function, are more inclined to concentrate better, and formulate questions better for things they do not understand.
Good nutrition and good sleeping habits are important to good classroom performance. They both can greatly improve learning ability and cognitive function having a positive affect on children’s education. When children have poor sleeping habits and poor nutrition their learning ability is less and classroom performance is lower. Both factors are very important for children’s education and good habits should be developed early ensure that they will do well throughout school and in life.
However, not everyone gets the 7-9 hours of sleep they need on a regular basis. In a study done by the National Institute of Health, one-third of Americans get less than 7 hours of sleep and more than 70% of high school students are not getting enough sleep on a school night (National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute 2012). Sleep deprivation is slowly becoming a global issue that the general population, especially students, are not very concerned about. This lack of concern is worrisome because sleep deprivation can have negative effects on a person’s lifestyle, especially on their physical health and their performance in
Unfortunately, in today’s society, school administrators focus heavily on standardized test scores and school rankings thus adding more pressure on students and teachers. This being said, schools have begun to focus on providing healthy foods because they help increase a person’s cognitive and critical thinking ability. It is seen that nutrition plays a great role in students’ performance on exams and physical activity due to the correlation between school provided meals and low student
It is common knowledge to most, that people perform better at school when they are adequately rested. Sleep is a necessary prerequisite for any action that an individual desires
Sleep: it helps to keep our learning to be consolidate. Students need to have a good night sleep when they have school next day. Also, the next day of school, the student will have more energy and patience to study, to think and to take notes. The attention of the student in class will be strong that will help to restore basics information in his
There are a lot of things researchers have learned over the years in the terms of nutrition and what is considered a healthy food choice. Armed with the research, caregivers of children now know that eating a balanced meal is very important for the children that they watch. Although, Junk food is convenient and delicious, healthy food will help children focus in class, and the benefits of eating healthy greatly pay off in the future. Eating healthy can help children in many aspects of their life, but not eating right can cause problems in the future with their physical body as well as their learning mind.

Sleep is vital in order for them to be healthier and do better academically. The world needs to take time to find ways to control sleep deprivation that is continuing affect others today. There is so many negative aspects of the scarcity of sleep that can have an impact on one’s life. However; there are still many different ways it can be avoided. Sleep deprivation is dangerous and has consequences that can be short term or long term. This is the reason for students and those around them need to see the importance in maintaining good sleeping practices. If we don’t change this problem students or even everyone could just end up suffering. We need to manage the way we sleep everyday and alternate into a more fitted sleeping atmosphere that will have a positive return in the end. As a whole, dealing with a highly situation like this can make a difference in so many lives for the better in this
Children understand that food is important in their life, however they do not know that nutrition also plays a significant role in health as well.
Research shows that sleep is a necessity in order for someone to be able to perform at their maximum potential. College students are no exception to the rule and are often at a greater risk to suffer from conditions that accompany sleep deprivation. Regardless of the time period, a college student must be well rested in order to perform at his or her best in terms of physical performance, memorization capabilities, and test-taking abilities. Also, without adequate sleep, the person will be more susceptible to illnesses, both mental and physical. In conclusion, I believe that sleep deprivation among college students is extremely common and has a direct effect on how well that student will perform or feel.

In this lab we studied the effects of sleep on learning. Using what we have learned in class, we know that the normal sleep period for adults is around an average of 7-8 hours a night. What we wanted to determine by the use of this lab was to show how changing the amount of sleep we get at night might affect our cognitive performance the next day. We can assume that having more or less sleep than the norm, definitely has an effect on our learning, specifically on our short term memory but what our study was designed to test was whether that is a positive or negative effect. We presume that having too little or too much can be detrimental to our learning capacity, specifically our memory retention rate. More specifically, we hypothesized that if we have a normal 8 hour sleep duration, then we will have better memory than if we were to sleep more or less than 8 hours.
A child’s proper growth depends greatly on their nutrition and health. A healthy diet is essential to the developing child. Food should never be used to reward, punish, or bribe a child. Instead children should have three healthy meals with snacks in between. It is also important for children to have good self care behaviors (including bathing, washing hands, brushing teeth), and adequate sleep.
Sleep has always been a popular subject among humans. There have been many studies that examine sleep and its correlation with a wide variety of variables, such as depression, energy levels, and grades. Students, as a group, are widely studied. As the world’s future leaders and thinkers, there is great importance placed on their achievements. In this study the effect of student sleep habits on perceived academic performance is investigated. Many things may affect students’ academic success among these variables are sleep habits.
Children who have the lack of sleep are considered as lack of basic nutrition (Coughlan, Sean 15), which can lead to being worse at following instructions in class as well as at school performance (mathematics, science and reading) in general. Chronic lack of sleep or insomnia can drive people to depression and other negative moods, even worse, there are studies shown that insomnia and sleep deprivation can cause mental
This study compared diets of 5,000 children in public schools and compared their performance on standard academic literacy tests. The data showed that students who ate poor, low-quality foods, high in sugars in fats performed worse on these standardized tests. Additionally, junk food can skew academic performance of students in schools by altering memory and learning abilities.
