Guns and Violence
School shootings, gang violence, drive by shootings, murder, and thousands of acts of violence are committed every day. Members of our society criticize their own people for this violence while they continue to sit back and do nothing about it. These acts of violence have many contributing factors. Violence in our country today is escalating because we don't control the distribution of the guns sold. There are not enough restrictions on guns sold legally. The illegal purchase of guns through the black market is out of control. There is not enough education on the usage and storage of guns.
There are not many restrictions on the distributions of guns. Guns are sold to any one who is of eighteen years of age or older. There is another restriction; it is called the waiting period. Any one who is willing to wait three to five days to receive their gun can purchase one. The government enforced this law to allow time for the person who is buying the gun to calm down, or come to another resolution than violence. The fact that there are little restrictions on the purchasing of guns leads to much bigger problems. Problems such as school shootings. Many people do not store their guns correctly and this allows children to come in contact with these guns. This often leads to violence. Whether this violence occurs in schools, on the playground, in the streets, or in the children's own bedroom. The guns sold legally to ...
In the United States of America, prostitution is illegal in all of its 50 states with the exception of the state of Nevada. Nevada is the only U.S. state with allows legal prostitution in some of its rural counties. Occupational health and safety laws are applied to the brothels in these counties but the sex workers elsewhere in the country still remain exposed to the threat of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) and violence from pimps and customers. Prostitution exists in various forms in the States: street prostitution, escort prostitution, and brothel prostitution (Harcourt). It has been estimated that the sum total of the revenue generated by the underground prostitution industry in the U.S. is about $14.6 billion (“Prostitution Revenue”), the fifth highest in the world (about 8% of the total annual worldwide revenue). If prostitution were made legal, it would increase the U...
Tests play a major role in a student’s academic career: they determine where the student goes to college, which AP classes the student will be able to take, and so on. Considering this information, it is vital to discover effective study methods that will enable students to retain the material longer and clearer. The article “Forget What You Know About Good Study Habits” by Benedict Carey presents the notion that efficacious studying must include diversity. Based upon years of scientific experiments, psychologists have been able to conclude that studying various material in various places and at spaced out intervals are better study habits than studying one subject in one sitting for a long period of consecutive time. The article is also centered
During my last semester at college, I postponed thinking about preparing for my tests. As each test day came closer, I got worried and desperately started cramming. I drank enough coffee to keep the whole city awake and woke up thinking that I would get a low grade. Eventually, I realized that students who always earned A's on their tests were not just lucky, but they really studied hard all through the semester. There are different ways to prepare for a specific test, and each individual must perfect his or her own style. I have developed a process that involves five steps to prepare for a test.
...orms of prostitution. They are using their money towards regulating and enhancing the economic prospects for prostitutes rather than condemning their actions like most states. What does this mean for Nevada? Well, as previously mentioned, Nevada is able to tax prostitution businesses and gain revenue for their state; in other words, the money they are spending towards the regulation and promotion of prostitution is being returned in tax revenue – the amount of money being made is much more than the money being used. To sum it up simply, “sex sells”; it is considered a psychological need for human beings, and no law or societal shaming is going to change the continuation of this practice whether it be with a prostitute (which high amounts have) or not. Why not take advantage of the prostitution business, and enjoy the eight billion dollars it’ll add to our economy?
Technical 23- (use as needed) I agree with this completely. I typically find I work better with writing down things. The best way I study for tests or memorizing things is to repeatedly write it down. For, example I had to study a book to take a test. I went through that book and copied it word for word two or three times. This is just how studying works for me.
Gun control has been around for many years and it has become a topic that has been talked about more and more often. However, gun control has created some differences on whether it is being used effectively and whether it is a good law or not. Gun control is the second amendment of the constitution and basically what it means is that it is the right to bear arms. The right to bear arms is a concerning topic for many people because now when a mass shooting occurs people immediately blame gun control but how do we know that gun control is the problem? People may think gun control is a good thing but in reality crime and violence are caused by many other things therefore gun control does not reduce violence.
Throughout the story Von Trier creates this character, who’s only real purpose is to please men, and when she cannot because of her own personal health, she is punished over and over again. He destroys her completely, allows her to be betrayed by anyone she’s ever cared for, and for what? The story has no real closure to her character, we can only assume she went back to her life, in hopes of continuing to please men.
By legalizing and regulating the act of prostitution, the spread of sexually transmitted diseases (STD’s) will decrease. Opponents of legalization believe that STD’s will increase substantially. However, licensed brothels will be required to enforce testing for STD’s. Implementing weekly sexually transmitted disease testing for all licensed workers will reduce the likeliness of spreading diseases to multiple partners. Also, having laws in place to enforce condom use by stating that anyone (worker or customer) caught not using protection will be arrested, fined, and will lose their license to work, will ensure the reduction of the spread of sexually transmitted diseases. Brothels are legal in ten of the seventeen counties in the state of Nevada. Those counties are, Churchill, Esmeralda, Pershing, Storey, Lander, Lyon, Humboldt, Elko, White Pine, Mineral, and Nye Counties., “In those ten counties combined, there are fewer reported cases of STD’s than the other seven counties in the state” (Nevada State Health Division STD Program 2013). The Nevada State Health Department collects data concerning sexually transmitted diseases from every d...
Aggression in psychology refers to the range of behaviours that can result in harm to one’s self, others or objects. Aggression can be expressed physically, mentally, verbally and emotionally, and can be performed for various reasons such as to express anger, to compete with others, or can be a reaction to pain. Research has shown that those who engage in aggressive behaviour define their behaviour as unplanned, although aggression may also be predatory, where it is planned and controlled.
The premise and purpose of public health are based around the concept of keeping our population healthy and safe, no matter what the threat is. Gun violence affects a large number of people, in a unique way. The number of people who die from gun violence each year is unacceptably high, but the number of people that are indirectly impacted is immeasurable. Family, friends, communities deal with the after affects of losing a loved one from a gun too.
“More then 30,000 people are killed by firearms each year in this country”(USA Gun Violence Statistics). Because of the U.S. Government allows U.S. citizens to buy firearms more than 30,000 people are killed each year (USA Gun Violence Statistics). The rate of people dying each year by guns is about to pass the number of deaths by car. Guns are very dangerous and if the legal age of having a gun is 21, then why is it so many teenagers have one. On average, mass shootings occur every two weeks and school shootings occur once a month (CNN). Statistics show that people are mimicking some of the mass shootings that there has been, for example theater shootings have been more and more frequent (CNN). If guns cause such a problem then why are they still legal in the United States? Aside from homicide people use guns for suicide. 15 through 21 years old is the age where suicide is more common then any other ages. Teens should not be able to have access to a gun like so many do.
Why are we as aggressive and can we develop a way to reduce our ever increasing aggressive behavior? What this research paper is going to cover just might answer that. First we’re going to go over different types of aggression and the differences between them. Next will be the several theories about aggression. This will cover from a biological and genetic point of view to how our diet affects our behaviors in negative ways. We will even look into how our culture has an effect on our aggression levels. Last is what ways can we potentially reduce and manage our angry tendencies as well as control the ever rising aggressive behavior in our society.
Aggression is a very highly researched area in Social Psychology, due to this it includes a variety of different theories that aim to explain what may cause an individual to behave in an aggressive manor. In this essay we will discuss the five main theories and approaches to aggression in Social Psychology, and aim to show a greater understanding of how these theories have influenced how Social Psychologists perceive aggressive behaviour, and what they can potentially do to reduce it in the future.
Prostitution is known as the oldest profession in the world, however, many states in the U.S. outlaw it. The textbook definition of prostitution is the "act or practice of engaging in sexual acts for money" ("Prostitution," Macmillan 805). Nevada is the first in the United States to legalize prostitution. Although the long term effects of legalized prostitution is uncertain, the short term effects have been economically beneficial. Prostitution should be legalized because not only could it financially benefit the country, but it could also reduce crime.
The first thing a person can do to improve their study habits is take better notes. When taking notes you do not have to write down every word the teacher says, if you do that you’re not going to know what's important and what's not important. If you do that you’re going to be studying things that’s not important and that could confuse you and make studying really boring. Write down only the things that you think are important. You can even read ahead in a book and highlight what you think is good information to know. If the teacher says anything more than once, or puts emphasis on something, highlight that it could be on your next test. Good thinking skills are especially important in note taking. Everyone has good thinking skills but that doesn’t necessarily mean that they use them. Good thinking skills can’t be studied they must be built up over...
