I have learned a lot about myself in the last twelve weeks. I discovered so much about my writing. I learned who I really am once I came out from behind the "Official Style" that I've clung to since junior high. I have to tell you, it was very difficult for me to let go. I felt lost and uncertain. But in the process I found myself, my style, and my voice. I learned to let myself come through in my writing. I have to admit, writing became a lot more fun and interesting.
When I looked back and read my first paper for this class, I laughed. I couldn't believe how trapped in the O.S. I was. I remember thinking as I wrote it that I was getting away from theme writing, but the only reasons I thought this were because I used the first person, and the paper had more than five paragraphs. How silly I was! It was still just a longer theme paper done in the first person point of view!
Actually, I think at the time I really didn't know any better. I had been writing this way for so long, I thought that I needed it for a good paper. I didn't want to leave it because, if I did, I wouldn't know what to do.
But this quarter changed everything. I learned to write like Stacy, not like Ms. Molitor (my high school teacher). I left the O.S. for just a little bit. I know that I'll end up using it for other classes and in other situations, but at least now I know that it has a place, and that place isn't _everywhere_.
I really enjoyed being able to start thinking for myself again. I liked the fact that I could write what I wanted in whatever way I wanted without being punished. The only tough part was that I was still expected to write in the O.S. for other classes. To top that off, I had to learn to write in journalistic style as well. ...

...life is going to be. Mom and Dad still help out with any money problems (interest-free banks are hard to find). I don't have to worry about food at all (Wally's, yummy!). I pay to live in the dorms, but after that I don't have to worry about heat, water, or electric bills. I don't even have to clean the bathroom! That's why I think that it is just a rehearsal for the rest of my life, and I will continue rehearsals until I finally graduate.
I really think that the skills I learned in this class will help me in the future. I want to let myself come through in my writing, even if I do go into journalism. At the very least, I want to be able to write effectively. I want to be able to draw people in to what I'm writing, and sometime the O.S. just doesn't work. At least now I know that I have the skills and confidence to move away from it and let myself come through.

Lee was determined to invade the North and win a victory important for southern morale, leads his army toward Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, where he hopes to destroy railroad bridges linking east with west. The Civil War is one of the defining wars in the history of this great nation. The Battle of Gettysburg was the bloodiest battle in American history, and a turning point in the four year war. At the time, Gettysburg was a small, quiet town generally unaffected by the war. General Robert E. Lee of the Confederate States of America and General George Meade of the Union converged in Gettysburg, and a conflict quickly arose. After three long days of battle the Union pulled away with a victory, though not an easy one. This essay will outline the six themes of history; in essence the who, what, when, where, why, and who cares of this infamous battle.
In the American Civil War, there were many major battles that contributed to the Union army proving victorious and the Confederacy suffering defeat. One of which that could be considered the most significant was the Battle of Gettysburg. A three day scuffle that essentially led to the dismantling of the entire southern war effort, Gettysburg is highly remembered as the biggest and bloodiest battle of the war. However, the final assault by the Confederate army on the third day of warfare was detrimental to the overall outcome of the battle. This brutal strike is also a perfect testament to the Confederate soldier’s courage and passion for their respective cause and ideals. In other words, it takes sincere discipline to march across open grasslands in clear sight, and rush headlong into a heavily fortified position held by the enemy. This attack is most widely known as Pickett’s Charge, an all-out Confederate offensive resulting in immense casualties for both sides involved.

This class was far more intense than what I expected but I was able to make it through the semester. I learned a lot from this class that I will carry into the future and use in other classes. All of the revision and feedback I have received during the time in the class helped me in the end. I feel like I am gradually becoming a better writer. I will take everything that I have learned in this class and use it for future reference when writing papers. I overall have enjoyed this class this semester.
Entering this course I was worried because I have struggled with writing in the past, and writing has never been my strongest area. I feared writing classes in middle and high school, and had the same expectations for this course. I had wondered if I was ready for college English, and was worried that my skills and abilities would not be one the level they needed to be for college courses. My attitude and understanding of my writing process have both changed since the beginning of this semester. One thing that really helped my attitude and confidence was the fact that I was able to complete the assignments and get a decent grade. I was worried that I might not be able to do college level writing, and when I started completing the assignments and learning new ways to write my confidence and attitude changed. Another thing that really helped me throughout this course was that there was plenty of reading and information available to guide me through my assignments. I realized that there was more freedom when it comes to writing than I had experienced in high school. Being able to write more freely, and the freedom to choose what subjects I would write over made the assignments more enjoyable and easier to
Over the course of this semester I learned a lot about myself as a writer. This English 101 class has really allowed me to expand my essay structure and ways of thinking. This was my first college writing course and it has given me much more freedom when writing because in high school I felt limited and like what we were writing was not very important. In high school I would write essays to just to fulfill the required word or page count and to a degree I still feel like this but maybe that is why I am an engineering major but in this course I actually was able to express my ideas and for the first time really test the limits of my writing capabilities. I really enjoyed being able to incorporate my voice more in my essays and I believe that I developed my own personal style a bit from this. At the beginning of the semester my writing was quite choppy and there was plenty of room for improvement in the overall flow of my essays. Now, I use several different tactics such as outlining to create better connections between paragraphs. I believe I was able to move beyond many of the high school ways of writing and make general improvements to my essays.
This semester was my very first semester as a college student. Being the first, it was probably the semester I would learn the most in. I learned the expectations for writing that I will have to live up to for the next four years of my college career. Though my high school teachers were usually demanding because I was in the Honors English section throughout high school, writing in college has still ?raised the bar? for me. Also, in high school, we would have weeks to pick a topic, create a thesis, outline the paper, write the paper, and then revise the paper. In college, the time restraints are not quite as lenient. I?ve had to learn to manage my time and be more productive with what free moments I have. Strangely enough, I?ve found the college English experience to be much more rewarding and enjoyable than in high school.
I learned from my peers that I am a better writer than I thought I was and that increased my confidence in my writing ability. This didn’t just teach me about myself; I learned how to write several different types of papers. I improved throughout the semester as I learned how to analyze for rhetorical appeals, research an issue, and evaluate a topic. I am glad that I was able to learn a lot from this class, as well as read my peers work. It was intriguing to see how others write and what topic are important to them. Personally, I believe that I have gained valuable knowledge in my English classes. Recently, I am about to end my third English course of college and it has been a good experience, those courses helped and influenced a lot in my writing. I believe I did more than just improve my writing skills. I received some rhetorical and genre knowledge, and learned about the writing process and how to appropriately enter a conversation without losing my own style of writing.
At the end of this class and this reflection period of these papers. I realised that I have become a better writer than I have ever been before, because I was finally able to take and recognize my mistakes in my papers. I feel as though this class has helped me become a more polished and professional writer. When I first entered English 110, I was extremely unsure and lacked confidence in my writing. I believe that this point can be partly attributed to the fact that I had always had my instructors holding my hand and helping me through the writing process in high school. My senior English teacher always reminded us that college would be much more challenging than her class was and then she would go on to tell us stories of professors who gave out zeros for tiny oversights within a paper. This combined with general apprehension about college life left me terrified. I had always been a strong writer in high school; I know how to form an argument and support
I am not the kind of person who talks or writes much. Putting my thoughts on papers is something I have always struggled with doing. I believe this class will help me improve on transferring my thoughts to paper, in an organized fashion. I look forward to becoming a better writer because of this class.
