Feminist Foundations
As the feminist movement has progressed through several generations it has shifted quite a bit in its general approach and theory. Contemporary writers such as Baumgardner and Richards, and Henry have illustrated a generational shift away from structurally aimed actions, and towards individual acts of subversion and small political actions (Baumgardner and Richards 126-202). This current course is very similar to the direction of other highly organic movements such as sustained dialogue. Feminism though, is particularly well documented, justified, and understood. Thus by comparing the feminist movement’s present tack to that of sustained dialogue, it will be possible to gain insight into the direction these movements should take, and this comparison will highlight the essential and effective foundations as well as the crucial divergences of these movements. Finally I will use the idea of objectivity as a justification for social action to create a new model of social action and conflict resolution.
Within third wave feminism there is a controversy over the significance of subversive actions that are framed by a very specific context. These actions are exemplified by the Girlie movement (Baumgardner and Richards 126-202), where feminists dress in cloths and accessories typically associated with “girlhood”. While wearing such cloths they execute typical feminist actions or more subtle acts of subversion, the key component is that they rely heavily on the mocking of the dominant society, or on satire. There were rays of sunlight that were depicted as well. The light in the painting seemed to be focused in the middle, where the stream was. Prior to the 1820’s the most widely accepted theory of the origins of Greece was the Ancient Model. In this model, primitive tribes, Pelasigians, and others inhabited Greece. In certain regions of Greece, the Egyptians and Phoenicians settled, built cities, and civilized the natives. The Phoenicians were credited with having introduced the alphabet while the Egyptians taught the Pelasgians about irrigation (Bernal, p. 7).
“The wind blows wherever it please. You hear its sound, but you cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going. So it is with everyone born of the Spirit.” Within the poetic image of wind, the presence of the Holy Spirit is described as something that flows freely and affects everything. This Spirit cannot be contained or restricted. The Holy Spirit is a life giving wind that acts in all of creation, and wherever this divine wind blows something new begins. Furthermore, describing the Spirit as water expounds upon the innate characteristics of this life-giving Spirit.
Women’s Studies classes must be open for considerable discussion and debate regarding the Third Wave agenda, as this new movement can draw on anything from previous waves, as well as anything else feminists feel is important enough to discuss. As several of the issues of Third Wave are touchy subjects, such as transexuality, pornography, and women’s feelings towards their bodies, the class must be open for the consideration of others opposing points of view.

In class we discussed that Judaism is a monotheistic religion and, as such, the idea of the holy trinity causes a serious problem. Contrary to this, Christian life is upheld by such an idea. The idea that the Father, the Son and the Holy Ghost operate independently from each other yet for the same purpose is what is found here. The Holy Spirit, in Christian life, is held in the sacraments. Spirit, thus, is central to Christian life because it is felt by the faithful, it is a way in which you can personally experience God.
Biblical witness centers on the Spirits activity of “binding believers to Christ, incorporation them into the church as the body of Christ and equipping the church for mission.” Despite the best effort of the Church to be the hands and feet of Christ it is reassuring to know that the Spirit is still present and working in the hearts of people outside of the church’s work. Without the work of the Spirit in the hearts of believers and throughout the word, humanity would not know the love of God. The Holy Spirit gives liberates and brings new life it unites, encourages and brings hope to a world pledged by darkness.
A debated issue throughout the Christian world since the early church has been the issue of baptism of the Holy Spirit. Questions of when does a follower of Christ actually receive God’s Spirit have been in dispute and scrutinized with very different understandings of the scriptural references to this splendid transformation that takes places in the life of a Christian. In both the Old and New Testaments, The Holy Spirit is a constant person that works in and amongst God’s people. In Numbers 11:24-25, the Spirit of God is displayed when “the Spirit rested on them”, referring to the seventy elders that were appointed to aid Moses. 1 Samuel 16:13 states that the mysterious Spirit of God rushed upon David during his coronation as the King of Israel. In Joel 2:28, the Spirit is promised by the prophet. “And it shall come to pass, afterward, that I will pour out my Spirit on all flesh; your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, and your young men shall see visions.” These are only a few of the references that appear in the Old Testament to the Spirit of God, but there is a very active present of the Spirit of God. John Stott writes, “In the Old Testament days, although all believers were indeed regenerate, the Holy Spirit came upon special people for special ministries at special times.” The differences in the Old and New Testament inner workings of the Spirit seems to be for temporary appointment in the Old Testament and permanent indwelling in the New Testament.
For Christians it is impossible to comprehend all of God’s mysteries, all of God’s plans, all of God’s desires, abilities, mercies, and blessings. It’s impossible to comprehend all of God. This is the price they pay for serving a divine God of infinitive complexity. Receiving and acknowledging the Holy Spirit is one of the vital parts of Christianity and in our walk with Christ. However, in the first century the Holy Spirit was not yet sent and Christianity was not formed. Despite this, there was still recognition of the spirit and the gifts and power that it has. There were many forms of the spirit that were mentioned in the Old Testament, some of which include wisdom, intelligence, and skill. Negative spirits were also a part of the first century world, which included harm, jealousy and lying.
