With the increasing impact of media on our lives today it has become easier for companies to manipulate people’s minds through advertisement. With the introduction of TVs in virtually every room in our homes, we are being constantly reached by mind manipulating commercials. This situation has become worse through the introduction of the World Wide Web at many people’s offices or at people’s personal computers at home. The facts show that it is impossible to go through a day without being bombarded with advertisements unless you live in the deepest part of the Amazon and even then it is likely that an American Express Employee will find you to hand you a replacement for your recently lost American Express credit card.
Since it is so easy to reach virtually every age group through commercials, companies target specific audiences in their commercials to increase their profits. In fact you will observe that companies with big advertisement budgets will produce different commercials for different times of the day to target their desired audience. Also, most companies will advertise specific products to specific audiences; however, Nike, one of the most well known and biggest companies in the world today, spends most of its advertisement budget to increase the value of its brand name. It does so through providing an image of being cool, or an appeal to people’s emotions. Nike also tries to affiliate itself with the best players in all sports in order to provide credibility for the quality of their products in general.

...nce and to convey an image of being a cool brand clearly shows that Nike’s priority is not to sell only one specific product at a time but to keep their customers loyal to their brand so they do not have to worry about individual products since no matter what kind of equipment Nike produces, as long as it has the Nike symbol on it, it will self itself automatically due to the brands fame. Overall, I think Nike’s advertisement goal can plainly describes as an attempt to “outscore” everybody else.

In turn, pollution decreases and people carpool more and limit their driving as much as possible. Another example would be the seat belt law. Having a seat belt law makes people avoid more severe injuries due to auto accidents and there is more incentive to drive slowly and more carefully. Despite the intentions, there is a higher number of accidents. This relates to the idea of a tipping point because initially, people did not wear seat belts because there weren't laws for it. Then, when the laws were implemented, the auto industry tipped into producing all cars will seat belts. In conclusion, most of life is related to the tipping point, including both economic trends and public policy.
Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury is a novel dealing with censorship and defiance in a world in which book burning and oppression is commonplace. The book deals with understanding what it truly means to live and realizing what is right.
Fahrenheit 451 was written during the fifties, a period of mass paranoia, war, and technological advancement. The paranoia in the fifties was due the fear of Communism at home. People were afraid that their best friends might be Communists. This is also portrayed in the book; you are not sure until the very end if some of the characters are friend or foe. Many inventions of the fifties have advanced mirrors in the book. One might think that the author was trying to express how those inventions would ultimately resulting in the dumbing down of society. The television was coming about in the fifties and the four screen TV's in the book hampered the thought process so people would not think.
I have divided this essay in three main parts. In the first part, I will give the description of the whole advertisement. The second part will be analyzing the ad and the third part will be the conclusion about how people got convinced by this ad to buy their soccer shoe. Nike Inc. is an American multinational corporation that is into designing, manufacturing, developing and marketing services worldwide. It also provide service in footwear, apparel, equipment, and accessories. It is one of the world's largest suppliers of athletic shoes and apparel. It is also a major manufacturer of sports equipment, which generated revenue in excess of US$24.1 billion in its fiscal year 2012.Nike employed more than 44,000 people worldwide as in 2012. The brand alone is valued at $10.7 billion. Hence, making it the most valuable brand in sports.

They look for performance and design in the products and also whether or not it is “value for money”. Nike also tries to attract people of different user status to buy their products. Nike attracts ex-users to use their products again by showing that they provide superior customer value when compared to other competitors, potential users and first-time users are attracted by the benefits that the product can offer them. Nike retain their hard core loyals by offering premium quality products with unique designs to allow consumers to stand-out, soft core loyals are captured by providing products at cheaper price as compared to similar products offered by competitors.
Desiree’s Baby takes place in the Antebellum Period (1789-1849) where slavery was starting to become less common. Never the less slavery was still prominent in the southern states such as Louisiana, which is where the story takes place. Armand, a plantation owner, treated his slaves as many plantation owners did, with anger, punishment, degradation, and humiliation, which were accomplished through his words and actions.
Desiree’s Baby is a story that is mainly about race. Unfortunately, three months after Desiree gives birth to her baby her life begins to fall apart. After reading this story I realized that if we surrender to ourselves and let our prejudices rule us, we will destroy our happiness; however in the long run we will then end up destroying ourselves! Desiree and Armand’s relationship could be described as a superficial love that was influenced by pride and being prejudice. In my own opinion I feel that a person’s race should never affect the way you feel about them. This February, the NFL had its 48th annual Super Bowl in conjunction with the highly anticipated commercials. There was one commercial released by a world famous soda producer, Coca Cola, which has created much controversy. Coca Cola took a unique take on the classic “America the Beautiful” song that has caused quite an uproar regarding prejudice, discrimination, and ethnicity in America.

Stories about the tragic mulatto have conjured feelings of anger, racism, and sympathy since the 19th century. In Kate Chopin’s short story “Desiree’s Baby,” Desiree plays the role of the tragic mulatto. This is a person who believes they are white, but finds out that they are actually black. There are three categories of the tragic mulatto and often they are female. The first is a woman fair enough to pass for white. She falls in love with a white man, but her mixed identity is revealed and the story ends dreadfully. The second is a woman who appears white and hides her “mixed race status” by lying. She’s accepted as being European or Spanish. Once her identity is found out, she loses her place in the community. Lastly is a woman who is accepted and liked socially, but once her Black heritage is recognized, she is forced into slavery and is sexually dominated by her slave master. Desiree is a racial stereotype in the story because her ancestry is unknown. Peel states that “Desiree casts doubt on the meaning of race, sex and class” (Peel 223). Solely based on her looks, she is assumed white and adopted by a white family. When Armand, her husband, interprets their baby’s appearance, he assumes that “the child and the mother are not white” (225). Her missing identity forces her to act as the tragic mulatto. Racial identity is determined by family history where the assumption of race is through skin color.

These ploys leave everyday people running to the store to pick up the latest and trendiest products. He was convinced that his name is “…one of the oldest and proudest in Louisiana” (Chopin 48), because of his family name. Armand took advantage of the fact that he was a owner slave and came from a family whose name was well known and he feel like a king. He’s pride was above his actual family and all he wanted was to protect the family name and history at any cost. After his boy was born, because his skin turned darker than it is supposed to be, he assumed that his wife, Desiree, is black and he asked her to leave. He felt that his pride was hurt because of the shame that his wife brought to the family name. He didn’t support that others to find the same thing and begin to discuss and make jokes about him. At this point, he started to show his real character. He felt like “…he no longer loved her, because of the unconscious injury she had brought upon his home and his name” (Chopin 51). These words bring out the true feelings of Armand, that he never loved Desiree, but it was only a fleeting desire, only a lust. According to Chopin, Desiree was a beautiful girl, “For the girl grew to be beautiful and gentle, affectionate and sincere, - the idol of Valmonde.” (47). Armand loved Desiree only for her outward appearance, not for her character. His love for Desiree and for his son was a superficial love. Armand is shown to be a weak character by his internal conflict himself. Armand’s weakness is initially shown by the way he treats his slaves. Although there is evidence to support that Armand is a man characteristic of the time, he seems to actually have benevolent feelings towards slaves. However, he is too weak express these feelings and instead acts in a rather strict manner: “Young Aubigny’s rule was a strict one, too, and under it his negroes had forgotten how to be gay, as they had been during the old master’s easy-going and indulgent lifetime,” (Chopin 9). He had a reputation to keep maintained and Armand being part black would have ruined it. He owned a plantation and was a slave master. Racism did play a major role because when Armand found out that the baby was mixed everything changed such as Armand’s mood and Desiree’s happiness. She seemed to be very jolly and happy. Armand was also content. He was pleasant to the slaves. After he saw his child growing to be mixed it changed his whole attitude. He did not love the child genuinely because love is unconditional. He was more concerned about the race of the child. This was a great short story to read and it gave me insight on the importance and seriousness of our society back then. I am glad we have overcome these terrible racial matters.
