The Power of E-Commerce

The Industrial Revolution changed the face of the business world. In much the same way the Internet Revolution has changed the business world; its impact has ricocheted to every corner of the world. The internet revolution gave birth to an electronic economy. Ecommerce has seen tremendous growth in the last years, its effects are countless. Ecommerce has allowed for the expansion and proliferation of a globalized economy, it has made transactions easier and more efficient, it has benefited the consumer by passing on tremendous savings and it offers little or no barriers thus allowing anyone to participate and benefit.

Globalization

The internet is a "globalization tool" because once anything is online it can reach anyone, anywhere at any time. This globalization mechanism is one of the driving forces behind the success of ecommerce. The internet enables trade on a global scale and makes it accessible to anyone large or small with a high or low volume of sales. EBay exemplifies the idea that ecommerce work on every scale. EBay was founded in 1995 as an online marketplace for the sale of goods for individuals (Gomes-Casseres). EBay is not in the business of selling goods; rather they connect people and provide them with an online forum and structure that is user-friendly and ready for individuals to participate in ecommerce. "EBay has both streamlined and globalized traditional person-to-person trading, which has traditionally been conducted through such forms as garage sales, collectibles shows, flea markets and more, with their web interface" (Gomes-Casseres). EBay has provided individuals with a means to sell items, and it has also provided companies with another sales outlet (Gomes-Casseres). T...
