Timeless Aspects of Hamlet, Prince of Denmark and Trifles
William Shakespeare is considered the greatest playwright, if not the greatest writer in the history of literature. His criticisms of society in his works have passed the “test of time,” and still are as significant today as they were when they were first written. There are many similarities in Hamlet, Prince of Denmark by William Shakespeare, and Trifles by Susan Glaspell, written in the early 20th century, that further support the timelessness of Shakespeare’s works. Despite the fact that Shakespeare’s Hamlet was written many centuries ago, his analyses of certain values in society are not only similar to those portrayed in the much more recent play, Trifles, but also to certain issues in modern society such as gender roles, family honor, suicide, and guilty conscience. For this reason, as well as, the complex structure, and intricate characters in the play, Hamlet is considered as Shakespeare’s greatest work of all his thirty-seven plays and one hundred and fifty-four sonnets.
This timelessness of Hamlet is also evident in the many issues and values that it shares with the more contemporary play, Trifles. The most apparent similarity between the two plays is the way women are viewed in each of them. In both plays, women are viewed as inferior to men in many different instances. In Trifles the women are made a mockery of, despite the fact that they are the ones who find the evidence that would eventually solve the murder mystery that the men are working on. At one point, the women find a half made quilt and begin to converse about it, then, the sheriff comes downstairs and says “They wonder if she was going to quilt it or just knot it!” (1621). The s...

However, the audience of “Hamlet” encounters the similar idea of inept femininity through Hamlet’s struggle to accept his indecisiveness, that causes the delay of his father’s revenge, an action in which he has “cause, and will, and strength, and means,/ To do’t. Examples gross as earth exhort” (Hoy 1992). In the renowned soliloquy “to be or not to be”, Hamlet explicitly designated his excessive thinking as the seed to his inaction:
In William Shakespeare’s play, Hamlet, Prince of Denmark, the protagonist, Hamlet, has arrived “from his university studies to find Claudius, his uncle, ruling Denmark and married to his mother, Gertrude. Her remarriage within two months of his father’s death has left Hamlet disillusioned, confused, and suspicious about Claudius” (DiYanni 1394). These types of crimes do not only happen in a person’s imagination, or in a made-up play, but also in our society today. Our society is just as immoral as Claudius and Gertrude. On the other hand, in Susan Gaspell’s contemporary play, Trifles, women are strong in character, protective of one another, and in charge of the situation, unlike Gertrude. Therefore, both Shakespeare and Gaspell have similar aspects of portrayal of the role of women, murder, and loyalty; and different aspects such as incest, suicide, and revenge.

In the 1970’s Iran, under Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi was a very centralized military state that maintained a close relationship with the USA. The Shah was notoriously out of touch with working class Iranians as he implemented many controversial economic policies against small business owners that he suspected involved profiteering. Also unrestricted economic expansions in Iran lead to huge government expenditure that became a serious problem when oil prices dropped in the mid 1970’s. This caused many huge government construction projects to halt and the economy to stall after many years of massive profit. Following this was high rates of inflation that affected Iranians buying power and living standards. (Afary, 2012) Under the Shah, political participation was not widely available for all Iranians and it was common for political opposition to be met with harassment, illegal detention, and even torture. These measures were implemented by the Iranian secret police knows as ‘SAVAK’. This totalitarian regime combined with the increasing modernisation of the country paved the way for revolution.
Shakespeare’s play Hamlet is a complex and ambiguous public exploration of key human experiences surrounding the aspects of revenge, betrayal and corruption. The Elizabethan play is focused centrally on the ghost’s reoccurring appearance as a symbol of death and disruption to the chain of being in the state of Denmark. The imagery of death and uncertainty has a direct impact on Hamlet’s state of mind as he struggles to search for the truth on his quest for revenge as he switches between his two incompatible values of his Christian codes of honour and humanist beliefs which come into direct conflict. The deterioration of the diseased state is aligned with his detached relationship with all women as a result of Gertrude’s betrayal to King Hamlet which makes Hamlet question his very existence and the need to restore the natural order of kings. Hamlet has endured the test of time as it still identifies with a modern audience through the dramatized issues concerning every human’s critical self and is a representation of their own experience of the bewildering human condition, as Hamlet struggles to pursuit justice as a result of an unwise desire for revenge.
The Elizabethan Era under the rule of Queen Elizabeth I in England not only produced an expansion of growth in the suburbs and a more unified nation, but also introduced the world’s most famous playwright of all times, William Shakespeare. During this period of greatest artistic achievement, Shakespeare, who produced about thirty- seven plays as well as many other great works, created what is considered his greatest achievement, Hamlet, Prince of Denmark. Surprisingly, this particular five-act play depicts numerous aspects which are relevant to today’s society, four hundred years later. Some of these aspects of human values are not only questioned, but also rigorously criticized, as well as generously supported throughout this play. These aspects include family loyalty, revenge, honesty, understanding, deception, and most notably value of human life, and gender roles. While many writers do not often compare to Shakespeare, a few, including Susan Glaspell, in her play, Trifles, compares yet contrasts greatly in dealing with similar lessons and values. Through the analyses of both literary pieces, it is clear that while some aspects in Hamlet directly compare, some contrast with those of Susan Glaspell’s shorter play, Trifles, and both demonstrate values relevant to today’s society.
