Manchester United Football Club History Manchester United Football Club is one of the most successful clubs in Britain along with the likes of Liverpool, Rangers and Arsenal but in this paper I will take a look why United are simply just the best there is. The Birth Of A Legend It all started way back in the 1870’s when a group of railway workers decided to form a football club to play in on the weekends. They called the team The Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway Football Club but in 1878 renamed themselves Newton Heath. In the early 1890’s the Football League accepted their application to join the league and were placed in the First Division, as there was two divisions. They started indifferently as they lost their first game to Blackburn Rovers, the powerhouse of the 1890’s, 4-3 but a week later they beat Wolverhampton 10-1 to notch up their first ever victory. This victory is still a club record. In 1894 the club moved to Bank Street in Clayton because they were facing major financial problems but John H. Davies, a brewery director, was persuaded to put some money into the club therefore becoming the chairman and a director at the club. He decided changes were needed so he board renamed the club Manchester United and changed the strips from green and gold halved shirts and dark green shorts to red shirts and white shorts. The club appointed their first ever manager in Ernest Mangall in 1903 and three years later United had pulled themselves out of the Second Division back into the First Division, but real success didn’t come till 1907/08 when they won the First Division title for the very first time. A year later in 1908/09 the club then won it’s first F.A. ... ... middle of paper ... ...well without him as their recent results in the Champions League have shown. It all started in 1946 when the San Francisco 49ers first began their franchise. In 1950 is when the moved to the National Football League. They earned their name from the gold miners who surged in San Francisco, in 1849, in search for gold so they could start a new life. Their first owner, Anthony J. Morabito, who was from the University of Santa Clara alumnus, had a dream of bringing a football team to the west. He had been moderately successful in the lumber hauling business. To make this happen, Anthony was put in touch with Arch Ward, an editor of the Chicago Tribune. Mr. Ward is credited with the All-American Conference, which was first held in October 1944. Anthony, after a long talk and negotiating with Mr. Ward, was granted a franchise with help from his younger brother, Victor, and partners in his lumbering business, Allen E. Sorrell, and E. J. Turre (“Niner’s history” www.49ersparadise.com).

Chicago Cubs baseball goes all the way back to April 25th, 1876 when they played the first game in the history of the Chicago National League Ball Club. However; at the time, they were not known as the “Cubs.” In general, they were known as the “White Stockings.” But a select few referred to them as the “Colts,” or “Orphans.” The team played in only five different locations in the 1800s because of the lack of places to play baseball at the time. As years went by, the league became popular, becoming one of the sports first dynasties. Chicago won six of the first eleven inaugural National League Championships (Cubs Timeline). In 1902, Frank Selee began managing Chicago to debut his managerial career. Just like managers, the name changed as well. A local newspaper penned the nickname “Cubs” for the first time. The name grew on people over time and was officially adopted in 1907. The year after that, victory arose in the city of Chicago. The season was filled with some of the greatest old-time baseball players. The batting line-up consisted of many good hitters and not jus...
Next, on November 12, 1892 came the first professional level game played between the Allegheny Athletic Association and the Pittsburgh Athletic Club. Finally, in 1920, the American Professional Football Association became the country’s first organized football league. Back then, the game resembled rugby more than the current game of football. Over time, the rules have been constantly changing in order to boost the excitement level and increase the game’s safety. The first of safety rules came in 1938 when they established roughing the passer, which prevented the defense from hitting the passer after he threw the ball. This was directly to protect the quarterback. Next, in 1943, helmets became mandatory for all players on the field. This was the first step to helping protect the wellness of the players’ heads, even though they were unaware of the seriousness of hits to the head and any long term
Flag football was created in 1933, and was played by many military officers by the 1940s. The soldiers could not play tackle football due to the risk of injure. The officers needed to be uninjured for battles. When the officers went back home to their families they brought flag football home with them. Early leagues began in the 1960s and the first flag football association was formed. The National Touch Football League changed the rules to touching being the way to “tackle” a player instead of the grabbing the flag. Flag football infiltrated colleges and championships started to be held by various universities. Flag football went pro in 1997 and the Professional Flag Football League, Inc. was formed.
Games similar to soccer were played in China as early as 400 B.C. In 200 A.D. the Romans played a game in which 2 teams tried to score by advancing the ball across a line on a field, which means no soccer goals. They passed the ball to one another, but not by kicking it. Also in the 1100's, London children played a form of soccer (World Book Encyclopedia, S p.73).
Over all their years in playing football their record is 739-544, and they have forty-two ties. They also lead the NFL with that record. They have not always been called the Chicago Bears, though. When the league first stared out they were called the Decatur Staley’s. They were called the Staley’s because the A.E. Staley food starch company funded the start of the team. In 1921 the team moved to Chicago and became the Chicago Staley’s. They were called the Bears because of the Cubs baseball team. Former player George Halas became the coach and was given 5000 dollars to keep the Staley’s name. In 1922, he changed the name to the Bears to reflect the Cubs basebal...

Football dates back as far as thousands of years ago. There are records that show that ancient civilizations of Greece, Egypt, and China (among others) played an age-old form of football with a stuffed leather ball. Early games in Old England were like mob riots. There were no rules; it was anything goes! The games were so rowdy and violent that many English rulers tried to outlaw them. But it didn’t work. In fact, English travelers took the game with them, spreading it all around the globe. But there needed to be rules. In 1863 the Football Association was formed, or FA, in England. They developed the first real set of rules for modern soccer, or football, as we know it. And actually, the word “soccer” came from their name, specifically from the word “assoc”.

Currently, FC Barcelona is one of the most elite clubs in the world, and it is almost impossible to imagine a world where FC Barcelona is not considered the gold standard of a soccer team. They may seem unstoppable right now, but in 2003, Barcelona looked like it was about to fall apart.
