Personal Narrative: Norm Violation

The Norm Violation that I performed took place in six different places, but mostly in the same environment. The Violations took place in Sayreville, New Brunswick, North Brunswick, Hazlet, Marlboro, and Matawan. You may now be asking yourself, what is in these towns that perform the same function? It could be a Police Department, Fire Department, a Food Market, a Burger King or even a Car Dealership. Well let me tell you that if you guessed any of these you were close but you didn't pin the tail on the donkey. The setting for my Norm Violation took place at several Movie Theaters in Middlesex and Monmouth Counties.
The Normative Assumption in any Movie Theater is that you go in, buy your ticket, make a stop at the concession stand and buy some goodies, turn in half of your ticket to the Ticket Taker and finally go see your movie. This is the Norm for pretty much everyone with the exception of a few, some people may not go to the concession stand to get goodies, due to different reasons. Also something that is relatively new thanks to technology and computers, people no longer have to get their tickets at the Theater, they can get them online. All they have to do now is go to the Movie Theater's web site such as National Amusements.com, or they can go to Movie Tickets.com. They then go to a machine in the Theater's lobby to receive their tickets. Now as you know when you go to the concession stand and get your goodies, your popcorn comes in a bag and your soda comes in a cup, this is where the violation comes into play. When I got up to the concession counter I ordered a Medium Popcorn and a Large Soda, the attendant then brought the items to me, at this point I told t...

..., Edgewater, College Point, Cross-County and Saw Mill. He was able to get me passes to all of the theaters I went to, so I didn't have to pay for tickets, and about a half hour into the movie I would come out and tell them that the bag was soaked and wet and that I want my money back. So in total my project cost me $12.75. Also when I revealed myself people would ask what college I go to, what my teachers name was, what were other reactions from other theaters. When I went back to the Regal in Marlboro which was about a week later and I revealed myself to the same Manager, she said that I cost someone a job and that how would I fell if someone cost me my job, I told them that I have been in worst situations then her employee was and never lost control. I also found out that they asked him to come back and work and they told him what happened, but he refused.
The time I've been misunderstood is when the final report cards came out. My parents were very disappointed in me but they did not understand that I was trying very hard. They never gave me a chance to explain, if I would of got chances to explain I wouldn't of been misunderstood. I always understand where they are coming from though. As parents they have all rights to be angry at me for not meeting the standards of grades that I usually do. I just really wish they could understand that it's a one time thing and I would never intentionally try to disappoint them like that on purpose.
From a young age, I was very curious. Curiosity caused my mind to see everything from a different perspective than most. I saw what could be improved and how I could improve. For example, when it came to editing movies, I was always able to see what could how it could have been better or I questioned how they had created it. My curiosity led me to try many different activities throughout high school, such as film camps, stage managing for plays, yearbook, and even creating videos for Rochester High School’s awards day. Finally, my junior year, I decided it was time I made films of my own for competitions. I wanted to have something that I could call my own. When it came to the two films I did for contests, I was there throughout the whole process.
So, I begged a whole bunch of my friends to let me borrow money, because I didn’t have enough money. But, when I talked to the lady about getting me the tickets, she told me that it was fine I didn’t have enough money because the vice principal said he would pay for it. I thanked him a lot, and I eventually payed everyone back. I really appreciated my principal very much for helping me pay for the tickets. Then after I got the tickets, I went home me and Katie had a lot of fun after
Unfamiliarity, in the broadest sense, can evoke a feeling of fear or anxiety. However, my unique cultural upbringing has made me comfortable with unfamiliarity, and eager to embrace differences among people with compassion and tolerance. I am the product of a cultural infusion—I was born in the United Kingdom to an English father, but was influenced by the Turkish customs of my mother. While living in England, I grew up eating dinner on the floor, listening to Turkish music on the radio, and waking up to a poster of Kemal Ataturk. I spent every summer living in Turkey where I learned the language, saw the way different people lived, and became familiar with the practices of Islam. At 14 years old I was immersed in yet another culture when I
“Hey honey, I’m sorry Tae and I are going to be an hour late, can you keep everything warm for us?” Trevor said to me. I prepared an extravagant evening. I cooked filet mignon, set the dining table, but the one thing I did not plan for made it come crashing down. However, I made the best of the night, even after the mishap. Humans believe they possess the ability to make error free decisions and judgements about the world around them. However, our judgements tend to contain illogical and biased feelings. One of the biggest biases we seem to have is we possess the power to control everyday situations, even if these events play out only according to probability. This is a cognitive bias called the illusion of control, and it is something we all
Society needs norms. Norms are unwritten rules that make life predictable. We have been trained to know these rules and what society recognizes as acceptable and unacceptable behaviors (Remle, Functionalism, 2016). When we act in an unexpected way, one of these norms is violated, society reacts, and sanctions are imposed. These sanctions can be positive or negative, formal or informal (Remle, Labeling Deviance, 2016).
Happiness is fake, like something forced upon me; something not real, fabricated and I don’t like it. I’m supposed to like it though. I’m supposed to like everything the government forces on me. I feel like I’m the only person who doesn’t feel content with my life, everyone else seems to be perfect while I’m falling apart at the seams.
After what seemed like an eternity of rigorous tests and dealing with the painful longing of wanting to hold a precious baby of my own in my arms, it happened; my dreams at long last came true. I was pregnant! But something happened; I felt my world come crashing down. The thought of bringing another life into this world terrified me.
The one truth about normality is that it is a myth. In fact, being different from one another is the only thing that is truly normal. But despite this, sometimes it is much easier to compare yourself to others. Bierce defines this as pain or “an uncomfortable frame of mind that may have a physical basis in something that is being done to the body, or may be purely mental, caused by the good fortune of another.” One’s luck to be normal can fuel the envious feeling that results in pure self-deprecation. And unfortunately, many, if not all humans, have felt this way.
“Yawwn!” I stretched his arms and tried to pull myself up. Only I couldn’t, “hmmmm,” I said out loud to myself. “It seems as if I can move from side to side but not up. I wonder if I can move downwards.” I turned and saw that I was on the floor, but I wasn’t on the floor of my house. I was on something that looked like silver dust. I found something next to me that looked like a Fitbit tm. I picked it up (or across) there was a sticky note on it that said. “Hello, newcomer if you are here that means that you have gotten here correctly. Press the button to create a gravity sphere.” I looked at the Fitbit-like thing and pressed the button. I realized that I was able to get up again. I saw that the note said bubble so I took it
Writing this essay was difficult because I had to remember events that had occurred in the past; one of the challenges, was trying to place everything in order, and be as accurate as possible. It was also difficult for me to write about a life experience that had made a big impact in my life. I felt successful as I reflected on my story and realized I had come a long way. During this process I learned that I have to do multiple organizers to have coherent ideas. I also learned that I have to have at least three or four drafts before I let anyone else edit. I write and then change things and I do this about three or four times before I am convinced with my writing.
the root of my confusion, I have discovered a few specific issues that may be problems because
My operant conditioning experiment I conducted on my little brother had modified his behaviour, however, not to what I expected. Firstly, I gained increased obedience, but not to the degree I was aiming for, which was how a dog would listen to a command with no resistance asked. I believe that a lack of time conducted on this experiment was the reason why I did not receive the level of obedience I aimed for. Secondly, he didn’t exactly close the laptop as to when I came back from the home, largely due to the fact that there was a flaw with the experiment that required me to yell. My parents or anyone in the house besides my little brother would shout at me for yelling, and would proceed to tell me to not yell in the house. Finally, I highly
Last year, in the 8th grade, I had two best friends. One named Maya and the other named Jane. Maya, Jane, and I were all unquestionably close friends, but one day all Maya wanted was to be popular and be friends with another girl who threw entertaining parties. Soon, Maya stopped hanging out with us as much and it was just Jane and me.
