Voltaire
The building blocks of the Enlightenment were formed out of a desire for truth, reason, and freedom – virtually contingent upon the last. An examination of Voltaire’s Candide and La Feyette’s Princess of Cleves, both well recognized pieces of the period, exemplify two views of freedom, the first based on its use in moderation and the latter making it a relative term. Relative freedom meaning it is correspondent to one’s social, economic, and religious place with in society.
In Candide, the main character’s own freedom and ability to make decisions is rather dangerous too not only himself but to others as well. Freedom to choose to dedicate his life to a relentless pursuit of his dear Cunegonde led to not only her enslavement as well as that of his agent Cacambo, the old woman, and his own. After “a lot of fearful calamities linked to one another,” Cunegonde and the old woman were both enslaved by a “onetime king named Ragotski” (372). Voltaire strongly conveys the concept that freedom is extremely desirable as long as it is not carried to illogical extremes. This satire certainly shows a man whom acts purely upon his own idealist views. The quest to be with his love leads to the slaughter of Cunegonde’s brother, when Candide “immediately drew his own sword and thrust it up to the hilt in the Baron’s belly” (342). Though out of self-protection, he goes to great lengths to accomplish his final goal and is completely capable of doing it all because he has complete freedom. At this point one may infer that Voltaire is mocking human kind and our natural tendency to abuse freedom.

Freedom, as everything in life, is imperative in moderate amounts. La Feyette’s main character’s exercises of freedom seem to lead to great unhappiness. One should keep in mind that this is a female writer as is her subject. Since the freedom has been determined to be a relative matter, its value will be less than it would if the subject were male. Voltaire seems to put a higher value upon freedom, though he still stresses the dangers of which possession of too much can lead to. He holds true to the Enlightenment theme of reason. When making decisions and acting upon them one must remain responsible for consequences. According to Voltaire, people always have a right to choose.
The author, Voltaire, wrote in the Enlightenment period, a literary movement characterized by the rising concern of philosophy, science, and politics. Voltaire’s writing was influenced by the Enlightenment movement to create awareness of global issues. This is evident in the repeated tragedies Candide stumbles upon. Social issues, corrupt authority figures, and war are real world topics that Voltaire chooses to address in Candide. The satirical nature of Candide allows for an in-depth discussion between the characters regarding the problems they face and the problems of the people they meet, creating a perspective that the audience is forced to look through. Beyond his written work Voltaire was an outspoken advocate for the freedom of religion, expression, and the separation of church and state. He used his versatile literary work as a tool to criticize the Catholic Church and overall intolerant French society. This paper's focus is Voltaire's view of human happiness. Specifically, it will argue that Voltaire, in Candide, says that human happiness is impossible. Voltaire believes this for three reasons. First, Voltaire presents mankind in the novel spending all its life worried about personal problems of the moment. When people in Candide have no problems, Voltaire indicates, they do not feel happy but become bored instead. Their emotional lives swing between worries and boredom with almost no periods of prolonged happiness. Secondly, Voltaire believes human happiness is impossible because the world as he presents it in Candide is full of selfish people whose actions spoil the well being of all their fellow human beings. Thirdly, Voltaire believes human happiness is impossible because governments are so violent and organized religion is so corrupt that they ruin the lives of millions through war and exploitation.

Overall Voltaire is successful in promoting his ideas and beliefs. It is clear he wants to see a drastic change in religion, politics and morals in the pre-modern period. Throughout his novel Candide he is able to criticise society with a light hearted mockery but also with a seriousness using extreme examples to address his points and concerns. It is arguable that his ambitions were far too high at a time of hope and debate in the 18th century.

Throughout history, western philosophers have vigorously attempted to define the word freedom, to little avail. This is because the word carries so many meanings in many different contexts. The consequences of these philosophers’ claims are immense: as “free” people, we like to rely on the notion of freedom, yet our judicial system relentlessly fights to explain what we can and cannot do. For instance, is screaming “bomb!” on an airplane considered one of our “freedoms?” Martin Luther, in his “Preface to the Epistle of St. Paul to the Romans” asserts that people are free when their actions naturally reflect laws and morality to the point that those laws are considered unnecessary. Immanuel Kant, in his “An Answer to the Question: What is Enlightenment?”, articulates a similar view: freedom for Kant is the ability to exercise one’s reasoning without limitation in a public sphere. A deeper reading of these two texts exposes that Kant’s and Luther’s interpretations of freedom are actually more similar than different. Indeed, they are mutually exclusive: one cannot coexist with the other and Kant’s views can even be read as a restating of Luther’s understandings.

To begin with, it is important to state that Voltaire's book is not about one specific thing or the other, the book is about life in general. This becomes apparent when Pangloss talks to Candide about cultivating his garden, he said, “for when man was put into the garden of Eden, it was with an intent to dress it; and this proves that man was not born to be idle”, to that statement Martin responds “Work then without disputing ... it is the only way to render life supportable.” (30). What Voltaire was trying to say is that maybe it is impossible to be truly happy, but the only way for people to be contempt is to work. Voltaire understood that if there is happiness in this world it will only come from the fruits of our labor.
The Enlightenment is held to be the source of many modern ideas, such as the primary values of freedom and reason. The views of philosophers such as Voltaire are considered to be the source of many essential changes in countries such as America and France. His views on religion, government, and freedom are what people remember most because they have not died out in today’s society.
