Shelley’s Frankenstein can be considered as one of the first representations of a possible apocalypse that is now ubiquitous, humans will someday create something that will destroy mankind. In different works, this Armageddon takes various forms: in the iconic movie The Matrix man-made machines enslave the human race, while in another popular movie I Am Legend, a genetically engineered virus mutates and kills the vast majority of the world’s population. Frankenstein, however, is not intended to give the reader an impending sense of doom, instead it warns about the consequences of creating something, no matter the intent behind its creation, without exercising proper caution.
In both the previously mentioned films and also in Frankenstein, there are good motives for the creation of the destroyer. In The Matrix, robots are the logical evolution of today’s computers, in I Am Legend, the virus is created to cure cancer. However, there is an old adage: the road to hell is paved with good intentions. Shelley confirms this concept many times over in Frankenstein. By giving Frankenstein reasons to try to create life–the death of his mother at an early age, the disdain of his professor, and Frankenstein’s desire to prove himself–Shelley inspires empathy towards Frankenstein. When Frankenstein is eventually brought to ruin by his creation, Shelley implies an important message: no matter the benevolence behind someone’s intentions, the result of his efforts can become catastrophic, only proper caution will prevent disaster.

He contemplates to himself, “I was now about to form another being, of whose disposition I was ignorant, she might become ten thousand times more malignant than her mate, and delight, for its own sake, in murder and wretchedness” (170). He realizes that this monster is likely to become just as malevolent as the previous one, and with that thought in mind he proceeds to destroy it. Consequently, the world is saved from having to deal with another daemon, perhaps even a race of daemons, and humankind survives.
Therein lies the difference between Frankenstein and the typical apocalypse-esque movie. Frankenstein is cautious when he builds the second monster, he knows that it could wreak havoc upon society, he destroys it, and humankind is saved. Through Frankenstein, Mary Shelley’s opinion is clear: by simply taking the time to be cautious, one can prevent disaster.

Mary Shelley’s novel Frankenstein is impressive, entertaining, and fascinating so is it no surprise there have been so many films and artworks influenced by her novel. Many of which have put their own spin to the horror novel, especially the character of the creature that remains one of the most recognized icons in horror fiction. However, there have been critics whom argue modern versions and variations have lost the horror and passion that is an essential to the creature. The start of the Creature is bound to one book. However, public impression of the Creature has changed severely since the publication of the original novel, leading to diverse styles and plot lines in its diverse film adaptations. People’s impression of the Creature have become so twisted and turned by time and decades of false film posters and article titles that most use the name “Frankenstein” to refer to the Creature itself, rather than the scientist who created him! It’s a shame! An understanding of literary history is a necessity to comprehend the truth of the Creature’s tragic history and how decades of film adaptations changed him into the hulking beast most people know him as today.
Although it is the same monster we see in the previous film, more depth is added to the character. The first major breakthrough for the monster was the scene he encounters the blind man. This is the first time we see him be kind. The air between the two is light and friendly, creating hope for the monster. They even solidify themselves as friends, the first big stepping stone to the transformation of the monster we soon will see. Another big plot revolves around the monsters want for someone “like him”. This suggests deep down in that conscious of his, he has realized how different, and unaccepted, he truly is. When he finally gets his wish, he soon realizes it was never meant to be. Another big breakthrough for the development of his conscious. He makes the courageous, even humane, decision to end both of their lives. The monster knows they were never meant to live, because death was always their calling. Over two centuries ago, Mary Shelley created a gruesome tale of the horrific ramifications that result when man over steps his bounds and manipulates nature. In her classic tale, Frankenstein, Shelley weaves together the terrifying implications of a young scientist playing God and creating life, only to be haunted for the duration of his life by the monster of his own sordid creation. Reading Shelley in the context of present technologically advanced times, her tale of monstrous creation provides a very gruesome caution. For today, it is not merely a human being the sciences are lusting blindly to bring to life, as was the deranged quest of Victor Frankenstein, but rather to generate something potentially even more dangerous and horrifying with implications that could endanger the entire world and human population.

The effects that were left as a result of Frankenstein’s monster were disastrous and harmful to anybody that he came in contact with and effected many lives. With Frankenstein’s creation lives were destroyed and ended by the hands of beast created by one single person. He killed many people because of the hatred that everyone had shown him when he came into contact with them. All the outcomes in this novel were negative because he never once had an effect that was either good or positive towards anyone throughout the novel.
When we are created into this world it’s not by the choice of our own. However, we are created most times out of love from our creator. Like a baby just newly born into this world needs to feel its mothers touch, scent, and security. The bonding makes you feel a connection to your maker of the world and without it a person may feel lost, abandoned, and unloved. From the beginning we hope to build our self-esteem through the love of our creator. Sadly, most people are not loved or accepted by their creator. This leads to a person lashing out in a number of ways that society views unconventional due to the lack of understanding that person suffers through abandonment alone. Although humans have the tendency to set idealistic goals to better future generations, often the results can prove disastrous, even deadly. The tale of Frankenstein, by Mary Shelley, focuses on the outcome of one man's idealistic motives and desires of dabbling with nature, which result in the creation of horrific creature. Victor Frankenstein was not doomed to failure from his initial desire to overstep the natural bounds of human knowledge. Rather, it was his poor parenting of his progeny that lead to his creation's thirst for the vindication of his unjust life. In his idealism, Victor is blinded, and so the creation accuses him for delivering him into a world where he could not ever be entirely received by the people who inhabit it. Not only failing to foresee his faulty idealism, nearing the end of the tale, he embarks upon a final journey, consciously choosing to pursue his creation in vengeance, while admitting he himself that it may result in his own doom. The creation of an unloved being and the quest for the elixir of life holds Victor Frankenstein more accountable for his own death than the creation himself.

Not only does the movie spread a false interpretation of Shelley’s work, it provides the public with no lasting message about technology or about the effects of misplaced human love. Shall we then seek revenge? Shall we destroy that what is evil? Of course not--Shelley gave us all to learn a lesson of tolerance and of correcting our mistakes.
