We all have seen a bodybuilders physic, whether it was in a magazine, the media, or in the gym. As we despise their freakish look we still wish that we had a body like them. But the reason we don’t look like that is because we know that the long term effects of steroids in will damage our bodies. Steroids have been a common use throughout human history since 1889. The fact that it’s illegal doesn’t seem to bother many users. Generations today are more reliant on this drug for various reasons, without realizing the consequences and long term effects that can result. Steroids are a way of cheating to reach your goals. Steroids are addictive, and over a short period of time they destroy the liver as well as the kidneys, affect personalities, and cause hormonal imbalances. Steroids present a higher risk than the person may understand due to their wide spread availability, and pressures to look perfect.

Firstly, Media and other aspects of society play a huge part in the pressures of using steroids. The result of using steroids is because of what society believes is an acceptable body type for both men and woman. It is amazing what both athletes and people would do to achieve higher levels of performance and to sometimes just get the edge on the competition.

“I just want to make a better performance” words spoken like a athlete that just wanted to get ahead, and make himself better for the sake of the sport. This statement mostly applies to athletes when they have been caught for the use of steroids in a competitive sport. The numerous pressures and stress on an athlete to perform greater has caused some individuals to lose concentration and breakdown. Besides the liver, using steroids can also affect one of the most important organs that keep us alive today, and that is the heart. What happens can be caused to the heart when using steroids is predispose people and increase the risk of a heart attack. Anabolic steroid increases the size of our heart and enlarges it. Increased enlargement of the heart can be extremely dangerous resulting in long term cardiac problems, or worse, chronic heart failure.

Lastly one of the common male effect is testicular atrophy. Testicular atrophy is a medical condition in which the testicles located in the sack, also known as the scrotum diminish in size. In a result of using steroids, testicular atrophy occurs when there has been a decreased level of luteinizing hormone, in which it is produced inside the male anatomy by the pituitary gland.
