Someday This Pain Will Be Useful to You is a novel written by Peter Cameron. It is a young adult novel about the life of the protagonist, James Sveck. The protagonist was isolated from him family, and could only relate well with his grandmother. James never liked his peers at all. This can be seen when he confesses, “I don't like people in general and people my age in particular” (Cameron 34). In addition, he never wanted to college, all he wished for was to buy his own house and live on his own away from his parents, and people of his age. James lived with his mum and sister and worked at his mom’s gallery. He only loved his grandmother, and the gallery manager, John. His cynical attitude of not talking to anyone earned him a visit to a psychiatrist. In the end, James faked his identity in order to pursue his feelings, but things did not turn out as expected.
The novel centres on an 18-year-old named James Sveck. James is a relatable character despite being bizarre and unusual. He is depicted as smart, and a sensitive person who does not like people around him. Many readers will connect and relate to him, as what he was going through, Is what all teens go through. Many teens after graduating from high school are always confused with what to do with their lives. James thoughts and observations makes up the entire story, together with the other minor characters in the story. James is the exemplification of the awkwardness teens go through, and the uncertainty about what they want to do with their lives. Through James’ life and experiences, the author is able to show the reader the pains in teenage years.

...is an amazing, enjoyable, touching and relatable book that no one should miss out. The book is the best for youth in high school. It is an exploration of the self-identity, love, and isolation in adolescence. The book gives a clear picture about the psychological pain brought about by loneliness, and one not being able to understand the world he/she lives in. James was homosexual but could not express his feelings openly because of fear. This book is suitable for mature teens because of some sexual references. The book will compel the readers to question, and validate their lives as they struggle to find a place in the world. Cameron’s book is an engaging, and moving story with ridiculous, clueless, sad and funny characters. It is a perfect slice for teenagers.

The diverse alternation of point of views also provides the story an effective way to reach out to readers and be felt. The characterisation is effectively done and applied as Sam, Grace, and the other supporting characters play individual, crucial roles in the course of the story. All the elements of a typical young adult novel, consisting of a gap-filled relationship between children and parents, emotion-driven teenagers, and a unique conflict that makes the book distinct from fellow novels, combined with the dangerous consequences of the challenges the couple encounter, make the book different from all other of the same genre. The plot unfolds slowly giving readers enough time to adjust and anticipate the heavy conflict when it arises. It has gotten us so hooked but the only thing we could possibly dislike about it was the slow pace of plot. Josephine was first introduced to the reading knowing that she was unsure of her identity and how she was searching for acceptance from her grandmother due to her illegitimacy. Marchetta created Josephine’s characteristic as one that the readers can truly understand and allow them to be able to feel a connection and a relation between the characters in the novel and themselves; it can make them realize that this is a social issues that each generation of teenagers face on a daily basis. The characters in the novel accompanied by the themes such as stereotypes and social statuses supported the author’s idea of creating a novel in which comment on the social issues and reflect reality within the novel.
After reading the directions and topic for this paper, I was extremely eager to get started. Adolescence is a stage of life that is very critical for a person. Speaking from my own experience, I know that the teenage years are a difficult part of life and during these years, one experiences a rollercoaster of different emotions, obstacles, and decision-making. Aside from the topic of Adolescence, I was glad that I could choose which movie I wanted to watch, and that was an easy decision. I decided to watch Sixteen Candles. The last time I watched this movie was when I received the DVD as a gift, which was when I turned sixteen. Holden Caulfield, portrayed in the J.D. Salinger novel Catcher in the Rye as an adolescent struggling to find his own identity, possesses many characteristics that easily link him to the typical teenager living today. The fact that the book was written many years ago clearly exemplifies the timeless nature of this work. Holden's actions are those that any teenager can clearly relate with. The desire for independence, the sexually related encounters, and the questioning of ones religion are issues that almost all teens have had or will have to deal with in their adolescent years. The novel and its main character's experiences can easily be related to and will forever link Holden with every member of society, because everyone in the world was or will be a teen sometime in their life.
After hearing a brief description of the story you might think that there aren’t many good things about they story. However, this is false, there are many good things in this book that makes it a good read. First being that it is a very intriguing book. This is good for teenage readers because often times they don’t willingly want to read, and this story will force the teenage or any reader to continue the book and continue reading the series. John Knowles’ novel, A Separate Peace, reveals the many dangers and hardships of adolescence. The main characters, Gene, and Finny, spend their summer together at a boarding school called Devon. The two boys, do everything together, until Gene, the main character, develops a resentful hatred toward his friend Finny. Gene becomes extremely jealous and envious of Finny, which fuels this resentment, and eventually turns deadly. Knowles presents a look at the darker side of adolescence, showing jealousy’s disastrous effects. Gene’s envious thoughts and jealous nature, create an internal enemy, that he must fight. A liberal humanistic critique reveals that Knowles’ novel, A Separate Peace, has a self contained meaning, expresses the enhancement of life, and reveals that human nature does not change.

Through this well-developed teenage character, JD Salinger, uses simple language and dialogue to outline many of the complex underlying problems haunting adolescents. With a unique beginning and ending, and an original look at our new society, The Catcher in the Rye is understood and appreciated on multiple levels of comprehension. The book provides new insights and a fresh view of the world in which adolescents live.
2. The first reason for this thesis stems from the point of view used in the story. The point of view exemplified is one of third person, more specifically one who is omniscient. The story’s message could not be conveyed from the first person, due to the fact that virtually everyone in the writing at hand is not only unable, but unwilling to figure out the true nature of their surroundings.
We all grow up, and for some, it is more tumultuous than others. J.D.Salinger is known for encompassing in Literary form the struggles of the transition from a young adolescent to the experience of living in the adult world and highlighting what is important to a teenager during their journey to maturity. Salinger discusses certain themes important to the average teenager such as the protection of innocence, sexual frustration, and refusal to let go of the world they leave behind when they enter adulthood with diction, narration and symbols.
There is a singular event that unites every single human being on the planet, growing up. Not everyone can say it was pleasant, but no one can deny that it took place. The transition between childhood innocence and adulthood is long and confusing; often forcing one to seek out the answers to questions that likely have no definitive answer. During the process, the adult world seems inviting and free, but only when we are on the brink of entering this cruel, unjust society can the ignorant bliss of childhood be truly recognized. Catcher in the Rye explores the intimidating complexities associated with adulthood and how baffling it seems to the naïve teenage mind. Through the main protagonist, Holden Caulfield, J.D. Salinger captures the confusion of a teenager when faced with the challenge of adapting to an adult society.
This book teaches the importance of self-expression and independence. If we did not have these necessities, then life would be like those in this novel. Empty, redundant, and fearful of what is going on. The quotes above show how different life can be without our basic freedoms. This novel was very interesting and it shows, no matter how dismal a situation is, there is always a way out if you never give up, even if you have to do it alone.
It deals with obstacles in life and the ways they are over come. Even if you are different, there are ways for everyone to fit in. The injustices in this book are well written to inform a large audience at many age levels. The book is also a great choice for those people who cheers for the underdogs. It served to illustrate how the simple things in life can mean everything.
