Operating System Paper
Introduction
Operating Systems have come a long way since the times of a separate windows system and Disk Operating System (DOS). Now, both systems are combined which made DOS obsolete. According to Capron (2001), “An operating system is a set of programs that lies between applications software and computer hardware; it is the fundamental software that controls access to all other software and hardware resources” (p. 65). Operating systems have three main functions: to manage computer resources, to establish user interface and to execute and provide services for application software. The computer would just be useless machine with no direction or purpose without an operating system. According Nickerson (2001), “The most important system software is the operating system because without it computers would be extremely difficult to use” (p. 31).
Operating System Compatibility in the Workplace
Watts-Smith and Cheng (2004) define compatibility as, “The ability of all hardware and all software in one unit, such as a computer, to work together without difficulty” (no pg.). As with a perfect world, there is no such thing as a perfect computer or software. There will always be compatibility issues with their set of patches and service packs to assist in the smooth operation of a computer information system. In the case of operating systems, upgrades always bring their host of compatibility problems or issues. While most compatibility issues go relatively unnoticed to the average computer user, the ones that are noticeable are extreme in nature. One of the important components of software engineering is the platforms. There are many various types of computing platforms. A few of these include AmigaOS, Linux, Windows, Solaris. These examples are just a few of many different computing platforms. The types of computing platforms can be differentiated into three different categories, which include operating-system examples, software frame work examples, and also hardware examples. Each of the different platforms has slightly different requirements and means of maintenance. Even the required standards for the platforms differentiate depending on which platform being used. Platforms are a vital part of systems and for applications, and are available in many various forms. The basis of this paper is mainly to observe the differences and similarities of four of these platforms. The particular platforms being compared and contrasted with each other include: Linux, Microsoft Windows, UNIX, and Macintosh. The purpose is to look at the purpose of each of these platforms and also to perceive the advantages and disadvantages of each.

This document describes the final project for the course COEN 283 – Operating System. The project is team oriented, main goal is to select a topic related the Operating System concepts that should be either theoretical, in which new algorithm is analysis and simulate, in which subsystem/driver of an OS is prototyped. Provide the simulation/implementation code and explain the detail design in this report. Also, Microsoft set the system to be a 30 day trail without the product key (to prevent piracy, but sometimes paying the disc and product key can be a lot of money too). However, 32-bit are different from 64-bit, such as RAM usage. You can use as the amount of nearly 3.5 GB of RAM in 32-bit, but have to switch to 64-bit to use up to 4 GB of RAM. Some programs are irreconcilable for 64-bit, but later programmers would make it work with 64-bit. Otherwise, some people decide to stick with 32-bit for their use. The upgrading from/to XP was a great deal because of old files was in the Windows_Old folder. Unfortunately, to use the program that was previously installed in the old operating system are there, but not installed for the newest-migrated operating system to such as vista. Unfortunately to re-install the program on the operating system was a must to continue to use the program, but settings are back to default (some people customize the setting for themselves).
As the internet is becoming faster and faster, an operating system (OS) is needed to manage the data in computers. An Operating system can be considered to be a set of programed codes that are created to control hardware such as computers. In 1985 Windows was established as an operating system and a year earlier Mac OS was established, and they have dominated the market of the computer programs since that time. Although, many companies have provided other operating systems, most users still prefer Mac as the most secured system and windows as it provides more multiple functions. It all began in 1991, during the time of monumental computing development. DOS had been bought from a Seattle hacker by Bill Gates, for a sum of $50,000 – a small price for an operating system that had managed sneak its way across the globe due to a clever marketing strategy. Apple’s OS and UNIX were both available, though the cost of running either was far greater than that of running DOS. Enter MINIX, an operating system developed from the ground up by Andrew S. Tanenbaum, a college professor. MINIX was part of a lesson plan used to teach students the inner-workings of an operating system. Tanenbaum had written a book on MINIX called “Operating System” and anyone who had picked up a copy would find the 12,000 lines of code that comprised MINIX itself. This was a big issue; due to the fact that all know (well published) operating systems to that point had been well guarded by software developers, thus making it difficult for people to truly expand on operating system mechanics.
Linux has long been one of many operating systems that have been out to prove its worth in all types of environment. It is currently being considered for enterprise network purposes as well as data centers where it implies servers, workstations and any mainframes as needed. Choosing what operating system to use, whether it is open source or not, can be difficult, though. This paper projects the advantages and concerns of choosing an open source solution like Linux as administrators and users are becoming more aware of Linux running on both server and desktop systems. It is quickly being adopted in an ever increasing number of global corporations and government agencies.

An operating system accomplishes the following tasks: interaction between computer and user, providing an environment of which programs operate, and manages files. Yet, each operating system does it its own way. Hence, it is advantageous to know the pros and cons of each operating system before a decision is made. Any kind of operating system can be utilized in most environments; it's just a matter of difficulty supporting it regarding maintenance, compatibility problems and other concerns. For example, the Mac OS X would be perfect for the graphic design department, but would not work out well in the engineering department, which is better suited for Windows or Linux.
