As the tremendous evolution of technology has quickly changed people's lives, instant messaging (IM) today is considered as a set of communication technologies used for text-based communication between two or more people. Garrett and Danziger (2008) demonstrate that people who utilize IM at work are likely to be interrupted less than non users and concurrently use computers to do both work-related and personal communication more regularly than others. However, this essay argues negative impacts resulting in losing concentration from work, increasing the distance among people and devaluating social language used in real life. According to Cameron and Webster (2005), IM allows users to see their friend lists which indicate that whether their friends are online, offline or busy. Furthermore, users could adjust their presence information, including automatically log in or log off their IM systems as well as control the amount of idle time. Due to its convenience, the population of IM users has increased significantly in recent years; however there are a great number of potential negative effects of IM that should be noticed at workplace. To begin with, one of the worst demerits of IM is 'the tendency for IM messages to break one's concentration while focused on another task' (Cameron & Webster 2005, p.97). Most office buildings are commonly equipped with Wireless Internet and thus if there are incoming messages, it will be self-regulating to notify employees by a small led lights or a short ring which lead them to easily neglect their affairs. Although most people become aware that the inbox can be checked later, they cannot wait until break time because of their curiosities. Workplace meetings have become as common an occurrence in daily business activity as punching in on a time clock. "Done right, meetings are one of the most powerful communication tools." (Thibodeau, 2005, para. 1). As beneficial as productive meetings can be to business organizations, ineffective meetings can have an equally detrimental effect. Regardless of how boring or pointless they may seem, not even modern technology is a substitute for personal interfacing. Maxwell (2004) states the importance of in-person communication:
In our world there are many forms of communication and these devices are beginning to take a toll on our younger generations. In Jeffery Kluger’s article,” We Never Talk Anymore: The Problem with Text Messaging,” the idea that younger generations are becoming socially inept due to technology is discussed. As these younger generations consume texting as a main form of communication other important social skills deteriate.
An expert point out that people communicating face-to-face is important; it is about quality not quantity, “people face a lot of self-expression, affiliation, or competition” (Bargh 580). Nie responds to his critics, “We would expect that all those spending more than the average of 10 hours a week on the Internet would report substantially fewer hours socializing with fairly members. Friends and neighbors. It is simply a matter of time” (Bargh 581). This passage suggests that when people spend more time on the internet/technology, their relationships become highly distant. Therefore, if we are no longer have face-to-face communication, we will lose social interaction. He also uses survey, statistic, historical and events to demonstrate and support his argument. The internet provide you the opportunity to do thing faster and more connection to others, yet the internet also affect your personal privacy. Privacy is important to everyone. He concludes his point and his survey seems to fit with Dave Egger’s novel: “the Internet use led to negative outcomes for the individual user, such as increases in depression and loneliness, and neglect of existing close relationships” (Bargh 580). Computer Mediated Communication, or CMC, has become prevalent in our lives today. Email happens to be the most common form of CMC within workplaces and organizations. (Darks & Bakker, 2010) Emails in the
Many working adults in different industries and professions complain that there is not enough time in the day. In the world today, many individuals, especially busy individuals, abuse text messaging and shy away from calling. The major reason is that texting allows an individual to send and receive messages in a few seconds. Texting has become so convenient and overly used that, according to Bloomberg BusinessWeek, Betty Lui reported that nearl...

Texting could also results in poor performance for job evaluation. According to the article, “Mobile voice communication and loneliness: Cell phone use and the social skills deficit hypothesis”. Cell phones can lead to distraction during work and negative effects on relationships with co-workers. Texting could also cause bad communication and hamper the ability to build relationship with worker. Another problem that texting distracted employee’s work ethic, “ the researchers found that each employee within the private and public sectors of organizations changed the way they interact due to the distraction of the cell phone by alternating their message context, social etiquette, self-impression and the ways of completing work within a business.” The researchers also found that the texting decreased the quality of
Cell Phones has become engraved into many live’s today. Instant messaging allows people to portray themselves in a more acceptable way to them or others. Being behind a cell phone or computer screen gives off a sense of comfort and confidence that a person is not able to project face to face. In Sherry Turkle’s article, “ No Need to Call,” she observes the relationships that many people have with technology and how they use it in their daily lives to communicate. Turkle asserts that communicating through text messages affects the way people interact with each other when it comes to being in person. Lacking interaction with others is affecting their own personal life, however, some argue that communicating through technology is the best solution for them and that phone calls “ demands their full attention when they don’t want to give it” (375). Many say technology is a good way for them to communicate without being in person or talking on the phone; others say technology has become a problem with keeping a physical communication with others.
Over the last century, information technology, such as the Internet, has brought our society forward and helps us get through life more efficiently and conveniently. In addition, it helps making global communication easier and faster as compared to hand-written mails that may take days if not weeks to reach its intended recipient. However, with such luxury and convenience, there is a debate whether the way we currently interact with fellow human beings with the help of technology is good or bad to our personal relationships. The Internet has increased the amount of communication globally, yet ironically the very technology that helps us increase our communication hinders our ability to socialize effectively in real life and create a healthy interpersonal relationship.

The recent revolution of internet and dot-com boom has brought more people familiar to computers and the Internet. It seems like that we can hardly find our way through everyday life with out using or having an internet connected computer next to us. The way we think, live, and communicate was changed once for all with the invention of networked communication of computers. Computers are no longer a piece of machine that sits on top of our desk for us to admire the marvelous technology brought by the geeks and freaks of 80's, but for us to constantly use and put in to work. And in a way, environment which we live in, the society, schools, jobs, forces us to make friends with that technology. Just like when you don't have a telephone you will have hard time communicate with meeting with your friends, absence of instant messaging programs, or ability to use one, will place you out of the circle of events happening with the friends, or don't let you do the work as fast or as good as the one who uses the technology. This is one of the reasons why increasing number of people choose to have computers and internet as a prime communication tool not only between friends and for socialization, but for everyday life. People are increasingly finding new ways of getting things done not by the waiting at the other end of the phone line, but clicking the way through a certain web pages, or typing their message on emails and messenger program. On-line part of the business of almost all industries, not only limited to the dot-com companies but other 'traditional' businesses as well, has been increasingly finding it self positioning more valuable and growing in potential. We are all too familiar with the online shopping sites and class websites that we use almost everyday in a very handy way of getting things done.
Many prefer mediated communication which occurs when a message is transported through an electronic device. Many also enjoy the asynchronous aspect of communication, which occurs when texting, emailing and when on social media websites because there is a time gap between when a message is sent and received. These communication aspects could cause someone to get lost in their own virtual world of social media and mediated asynchronous communication. According to an article by Peter Post, written in EBSCOhost he wrote, “As more technical opportunities allow people to communicate without being "face-to-face," people are learning less about how to communicate effectively” (Post). This is proven everyday because we have a tendency to communicate through electronics because it is believed to be more efficient. It doesn’t matter if you’re shopping, working out or commuting to work, people are always distracted by their handheld electronics. This distraction affects communication because most people are so used to the aspects of nonverbal

Technology has changed the way society has interacted with one another. While technology has allowed society countless means of social interactions that weren’t possible 50 years ago, and has allowed people to sustain long-distance friendships that would have otherwise ended, the fact remains that technology is still taking over human interaction. Many may argue that this change has been positive. However, there are those who believe that this is one of the numerous social disasters when it comes to technology. It is believed that the changes are ruining the quality of social interaction that we all need as human beings. It’s getting to the point where people are relying more and more on technology as a way to communicate with their friends
