Statement of Purpose for Tony Harper

“Never stop pursuing knowledge and education. These are things that no one can take from you regardless of what life throws at you.” This insightful piece of wisdom was offered to me by my grandfather, a professor at Northern Arizona University. He continually stressed to me that the attainment of knowledge and education are always worthwhile undertakings. For this reason I find myself unfulfilled unless some part of my days are spent actively seeking to further my current understanding of a given subject or endeavoring to learn a new one. I truly believe that no matter what unexpected events life creates, the educated person is always better equipped to adapt and thrive.

Education Background

After high school I wanted to find something both personally and educationally challenging. I joined the Navy and became a Naval Nuclear Power School student. This school is known to have one of the most academically challenging curriculums the United States Military has to offer. During my time in the Navy nuclear power field I became interested in computers and began informally educating myself on the topic of computers and information technology. I decided to pursue my undergraduate degree in the subject but not many university schedules conform to the needs of a full-time military member. Fortunately, the University of Phoenix was piloting several programs that allowed for the completion of an undergraduate degree with courses delivered entirely via the Internet. This enabled me to earn my Bachelors of Science in Information Technology and ultimately led to my commission as a Naval Officer.

Final Thoughts

As a proud American sailor I truly want my Navy to be the absolute best that it can be. I believe that with the proper education, experience and personal tenacity I can help to keep moving my functional area, the logistics branch, in that direction. To ensure success I must be able to clearly communicate what is required to guarantee our decision makers, including myself, have the most accurate, current and easily accessible information possible. This information must be readily available to enable an efficient and sound decision-making process. I am confident UO’s AIM program will give me the added expertise I need not just to succeed in this endeavor but to excel in it.
