My Communication Skills Improving my communication skills has been a work in progress starting back in the early years of my life. I have always been my own worse critic. Usually beating myself down through interpersonal communication. Now as an adult I have made great improvements but still have trouble dealing with perception and self-image. Not being raised in an environment of positive reinforcement and poor communication in the workplace I have made it a point to change that trait in my own family and professional environment. When reading the opening lecture I cringed at the thought of dealing with communication. Sort of that belly ache feeling you get when you had to do an oral presentation in front of the class in elementary school. I understand have a number of strong qualities but self-image and my perception are still traits I long to improve. My self-image is so low that I have a tremendous amount of self-pity or self-hatred. I do however want to find that happy median where I'm comfortable in my own skin. It's odd how my feelings about myself change from day to day. I engage quite often in interpersonal conversation, question my motives and encouraging myself to move forward. My success in business attributes to my abilities but I still put an unbelievable amount of stress on myself to be the best and never seem comfortable to relax and enjoy what I have and w... ... middle of paper ... ... also convey a strong confidence in my ability to perform my job at a high level. Self-motivation is one of the traits that I put at the very top of any list of positive attributes. Being healthy is something that I put allot of emphasis on sense I was young. Sports and training soon lead to a focus on nutritional and now mental well-being. I understand the effects of stress and negativity and have been making strong efforts to both separate myself from the negative elements. Some life changes and a wonderful life partner have made this goal and lifestyle well worth the time investment.
However, I have learned to improve my communication skills and relationships through communication courses. Prior to enrolling in communication
I have overcome several physical challenges that have impacted my health which has led me to constantly educate myself and others of better ways to care for the body. Healthy living consists of regularly exercising to control weight, not smoking, limiting alcoholic intake, eating a balanced diet, taking medications as
This course has taught me many things. I was not aware that there was so much information to learn about communication, but I have been pleasantly surprised. This course has taught me better ways to communicate with my significant other, my family, my friends, my co-workers, as well as with strangers. I have greatly enjoyed each assignment because they challenged me to examine the flaws within my own communication style. I hope to employ the skills and tools I have learned in this course and apply them to all my future communications.
Being healthy in body and mind is the core of personal wellness. Getting to that point though is a process and it takes deliberate actions to make it happen. It requires choosing which behaviors will help and which ones won't. It requires making decisions every day that helps take a person to a better state of body and mind health.
Everyone has a mental picture of themselves; whether it’s how they look, what they’re good or bad at, and what their weaknesses and strengths are. A lot of people tend to think negatively about themselves, but they’re just looking at it the wrong way, and there are many ways to boost your self-esteem. If you are constantly thinking negative things about yourself, it’s bound to make you upset about who you are. Every day, try to write down three things about yourself that make you happy. Build up your self-esteem. Set mini goals for yourself, ones that you know you can get done, while still doing what you need to. Reward yourself. Let you know you are worth something and that you are good for something.
...e my relationships. I also believe that my personality enables me the ability to communicate with allot of people, regardless of who they may be. As an outgoing individual this makes me more than likely to approach someone. I think my weaknesses communication wise, are related to my listening skills. At times I feel as though I do not use active listening enough to comprehend what someone is trying to convey to me. I think that if I used more eye contact when listening as well as nonverbal cues such as nodding with my head I will acquire the information better. Actively listening will help me appear more engaged in the conversation, show that I am actually listening, and provide me with information I need for a response. I find it is easier to respond to a person when I actually attempt to listen to everything they say and when I am engaged in their conversation.
healthy is a major component in ones’ overall wellbeing, more so mentally, but being healthy
My first choice of being healthy is playing sports/ being on a sports team. For example sports reduces the risk of disease. The most common disease is cardiovascular disease this can occur when you are inactive. Also playing sports reduces stress. And you are always happier after your practice is over. Lastly, What I have learned is that playing sports helps me achieve my goals and dreams. As a result playing sports has benefits and positive impacts for me in the future.
The concept of health introduces multiple complexities further deepening the meaning of what it is to be healthy. The definition of health is arbitrary and can differ from individual to individual. Otherwise, my basic perception of health is experienced through the things I learned at school and from the people around me. Growing up, I was taught practices such as coughing into my sleeve and washing my hands to prevent the spread of germs. What I always understood about health is just to simply avoid sickness. However, my perspective gradually changed as I experience events involving my well-being and those around me. I began to realize that health has a plethora of definitions which helped create my own idea of that concept. Health, to me,
I was never conscious about my health till high school. It was during high school that I developed a mental model. I learned the consequences of the food that I consume daily. I often ate fast foods and soon I started to gain weight. I gain this weight very quickly and my activity level went down drastically. My weight gain affected my confidence and that’s when I began to be aware of my health in a positive way. I stopped eating fast foods, I worked out everyday and soon I was back to my normal weight. This experience has taught me what it means to take care of your body. My mental model begin with my weight struggle and it turned into me having a healthy life style.
During the course of this semester; the variety of writing styles and essays assigned to me in my communication skills class encouraged the development of my writing skills, as well as provided me with more self-assurance in my abilities. My writing, research, and presentation abilities enhanced through practice, determination, and the understanding I gained during this course. With every single writing assignment, I learned new innovative approaches and skills, which enhanced my abilities to improve my thoughts logically, enabling me to write more clearly, and to organize my papers more effectively. At the beginning of this semester; despite the fact that I already knew the terminology MAP: message, audience, purpose; I never really understood the significance of MAP. For this reason, my writing lacked clarity, organization, and my writings appeared less focused on the topics. As a result my research papers and essays did not flow as smoothly from one passage to the next. Furthermore, I was unaccustomed with the precise procedures used when writing an essay. For instance, my previous classes before college, although requiring a reference page, did not require me to include proper citations in my writings. After evaluating the quality of my writing toward the end of the semester, I recognized vast improvements in several areas of my writing. By concentrating on the beginning stages of my writings, I could distinguish ahead of time my audience and my message. As a result, my essays are clear, and I remain on topic. In addition to that using transition phrases efficiently also helps my writing to flow smoothly. The proper use of transitions makes my writings easy to follow from one topic to the next. I also learned that pre-writing...
Lots of people thinks that they know themselves very well; they have a right way of communication, they know how to listen and respond to others, even emotional intelligence. Is this what you thought? I did. However after I have done my observe behavior interview to my friends, I believe that self-reflection is important to everyone to understand and improve our own communication styles.
On a daily basis, we come in contact with individuals that we have to communicate with, wither it be for work purposes, educational purposes, or social practices. As active humans we cannot escape the idea of socializing or communication, therefor; we make it a daily routine who we communicate with, how we communicate with them, what we listen to and how we listen it. With this routine habits are formed, some are strengths but others are weaknesses that diminish the communication quality. It is extremely important for individuals to recognize these strengths and weakness within their communication routine. By recognizing their strengths, they are able to improve even further and use their ability to get them closer to goals they may have set for themselves. Recognizing their weaknesses is just as important if not more important.
I believe that the greatest benefit of staying healthy that I have experienced is ultimately being able to see my family every day. I love my family with all my heart and I want to be with them as long as possible. By living a healthy lifestyle, it will extend my life expectancy to a great extent, and hopefully I will be able to spend a good deal of time with my beloved family that has supported me immensely through all the smiles and cries.
So far, my self-concept has changed positively and in time, it will improve (optimists). The only difficulty that I have been facing is the ability to defend myself against negative comments from others. Because of my thinking process speed, it takes time for me to acquire comments and how to say them immediately. In addition, I found that it is not necessary to give a response back to negative comments in order to defend yourself, except in courtrooms. Nonverbal expressions are also as powerful. For example, ignoring critical comments create a serious climate between you and the speaker –sending a message that the comment was unnecessary and offensive. But in some cases, verbal messages are necessary, such as that in debates over issues.
