My Boring Summers Led to My Successful Career and Life

As a young teenager, my parents made me work at my dad’s law firm every summer. They told me that boredom leads to trouble and bad choices. Instead of hanging out with friends or relaxing during the summer, I went to work. I did simple tasks that seemed demeaning and trivial. He is making me do jobs no one else wants to do, I thought to myself. Although I didn’t then, I realize now that those unhappy summers ended up keeping me out of trouble and preparing me for a career.
School was getting out and all my friends talked about their summer plans. I never got excited because I knew most of my summer would be consumed at my dad’s law firm doing whatever job he asked of me. None of which seemed important, it was obviously busy work.
My parents believed that teenagers should be kept busy and with adult supervision at all times. They allowed friends to spend the night at my house on the weekends, but they only allow me to go to friends if they met and talked to the other parents about every tiny detail of our plans.
