The Internet is one of the most amazing inventions through out history. These days, we can practically do everything online, we can get the latest news, connect with our friends, watch movies, tv shows and live broadcasting and we can even do our shopping using the internet. Since web 2.0 was introduced to the web, the web became more flexible.
From the beginning of time, humans have always been in social networks. Social networks are formed on everyday basis, around friends, family and places someone might visit. Social media is any kind of information we share with our social network using social networking websites or services, for example; blogs, forums, photos, audio profiles and status updates (Barefoot & Szabo, 2009). Social media allow their users to comment, post share, and update their statuses at anytime and instantly. Recently, social networking has become very popular among users all around the globe. At the moment, there are several huge popular social media networks, which are Facebook, Twitter and Youtube (Barefoot & Szabo, 2009). From the first glance at these websites, someone might think that they are only useful to connect with friends and family, but the deeper you look into them, you’ll find out that they are new powerful marketing places. They are the places where the ball is in the customers court, the word of mouth can either make or break a product.
Social media has upgraded the traditional marketing way and made it a two way communication instead of a one way communication like it used to be. The rapid growth of the social media networking makes life different. According to the real time internet live statistics, the internet users in the world are now more than 3,338,000,000 and keep rising every day (Internet Live Stats, 2016). Social media like Facebook, Sina microblog (Weibo), Twitter, Instagram and YouTube are defined as the online communities which allow users to create and share their own content (Bolton et al., 2013). The faster and easier information exchange brings a new trend of marketing communication established and makes traditional peer to peer word of mouth spreading go online. Social media provides a platform for consumer to engage in electronic word-of-mouth. It can be either positive or negative statement on the product brand or service which made by potential, actual or experience users on the internet (Themba & Mulala, 2013). Facebook is one of the fast developing social media. It brings up a new trend of social media marketing. Facebook influenced customer behavior and suggested to be one of the most critical metrics of social media usage (Schultz, Schwepker & Good, 2012).
According to Nair (2011), “The social media property on the web is exploding and fast becoming a necessary part of the arsenal of any organization. It took 38 years for the radio to attract 50 million listeners, and 13 years for television to gain the attention of 50 million viewers. The Internet took only four years to attract 50 million participants, and Facebook reached 50 million participants in only one-and-a-half years. Facebook, which was originally designed for Harvard students and launched in 2004, has become a phenomenal example of social engagement. By 2009, Facebook had already achieved 100 million monthly active users covering age groups from 13 to 65; by the end of 2010, there were more than 500 million users. (p. 46) With so many people connected through social media and since businesses are dependent on people to thrive, they have been impacted both positively and negatively.
As technology progresses, social media continues to have a positive impact on people’s lives. It helps individuals communicate with loved ones that are farther away, become informed easier, and it helps open doors to businesses. Web 2.0 tools are used highly today and consist of applications like wikis, blogs, podcasts and social networking applications such as Facebook, twitter, my space and YouTube. Previously used web 1.0 tools are the conceptual evolution of World Wide Web (WWW). It uses applications like websites, e-mail and newsletters. Web 1.0 is more static and it was a major hit in healthcare sector when physicians access the static contents in trusted websites containing medical journals. The contents provided through web 1.0 tool cannot be edited and provider can review, delete and correct their contents anytime. Evolution of web 2.0 tools created an interactive approach from the static and provider centered approach. Its interactive approach is a two-way communication between provider and user. As a result, it is a powerful tool to reach prescribers and patients in field of pharmaceuticals.

Social media is a form of online communication channels devoted to society input, intercommunication, and cooperation. In social media, people can talk and interact without restriction, exchange and debate information with each other about their lives by using many different combinations of the words, personal multimedia, photos, and videos. Also, in social media, individulsa and groups can create, edit, comment on, and engage in personal conversations. There are numerous types of social media, for example, wikis, blogs, social network site, micro blogging services, and sites sharing media. At the beginning, social media was limited to a few networks sites, for instance, Bulletin Board System that allows people to communicate with each other and post a comment. Today, social media has transformed from ineffective sites to more useful and effective websites, for example, Facebook, and MySpace. Some companies are using social media to achieve their goals which is attracting more customers to company website. Three advantages of using social media in business are: raising brand consciousness, building customer relationships, and increasing performance measurements.
Almost all circles have been using the name of social media. The development of social media technology has been mushrooming and rooted in everyday life and has changed the lifestyle and even the mindset of everyone who uses it. Social media can also be used by various groups and age is also not decisive, ranging from children, teenagers and even elderly people.
