The hiring of Mike Rice Jr. does not seem like a bad idea on paper. In 2009, Mike Rice Jr. helped lead Robert Morris to its first NCAA tournament since 1992. He did this again in the 2010 season as we well. Someone with the credentials like Mike Rice Jr. seems like a perfect fit for a team not doing so well with Fred Hill being head coach. The team placed last place in their conference under Fred Hill throughout most of his time with Rutgers. It was time for a change; Mike Rice Jr. was the solution to this bad performance. Under his three years with the team, he managed to get the team in 11th place. Not a significant improvement, but he was on the right track improving each season. Unfortunately, his time came short when footage leaked of him berating, pushing, kicking, cursing and throwing basketballs at the players during practices. Coaches are responsible to treat everyone with dignity and respect providing a model of fair play and sportsmanship. This is the code of ethics for coaches, but can one disagree and say situation dictates? I will argue to disagree because society is beyond fragile in today’s world. Has anyone ever grown up in New Jersey? The conducts of these kids are not of high standard; obedience to orders is not something they practice. Mike Rice Jr. did nothing wrong in my opinion and simply used a different method to convey his theories. In three years, he took the team from last place to 11th place. Every season the team placed higher and higher in the conference. Apparently, something was going right in order for the team to improve every season. Some may think his tactics were unethical, I say; go spend a day in New Jersey public schools. See how these kids curse, kick, and push our schoolteachers. Societ...

...meone to give 110% or nothing at all in my organization. Being pregnant, just count them gone for the whole year as they go through appointments and take fraternity leave after the child is born. The decision was fair and I once again, agree with the hiring of Julie Hermann. Julie Hermann is hired to be the athletic director; she will not have limited contact with the players. Athletic directors oversee the work of coaches and related staff involved in the athletic programs. Eddie Jones is a good head coach; there should be no doubts with him employed as the head coach. Julie Hermann is a good person regardless of what the public thinks. She has served on many community boards, including Frazier Rehab Institute, Women 4 Women, and YMCA to name a few. Again, everyone deserves a second chance despite the consequences; she will be a great addition to the Rutgers staff.
when selecting the rowers should have taken into consideration both the psychological (personality types and traits) and the physical aspects (strength, speed, stamina, & coordination) and experimented the results of various combinations by mixing these aspects. He should have identified the growing internal conflicts and tried to look into the matter in the initial stages. Coach P from the beginning has focused on ascertaining his belief whether the Varsity team he chose is highly competent or not. Quantitatively, the members were highly competent in their individual abilities. Coach P. had several opportunities to counter this during the Atlanta Retreat. However, he failed to take actions on their failure as a team and waited to resolve it only in the end, just three days before the national games. The Army Varsity Crew is a dysfunctional group. They’ve not yet reached the Norming phase where trust among the members has largely been achieved. The coach should have made sure the structure and composition of the teams were properly made long before the seat races have started. The lack of presence of strong motivator in the Varsity team should have been met to give them a
Bobby Knight, longtime Indiana men’s head basketball coach, was recently fired. This firing sparked a controversy among basketball fans throughout the nation; did he deserve to be fired? I believe that Bobby Knight deserved to be fired. Although coach Knight is one of the best coaches in the nation and has earned the respect of countless numbers of fans including myself, I do not believe that a coach should be able to act the way he acted and get away with it. Coach Knight’s record for abusing players, abusing the media, and being a jerk should speak for itself and there is no doubt in my mind that Bobby Knights firing can be justified.
Sportsmanship is an important when you are in sports. When Sandy was coaching the Dolphins, an orphanage baseball team, he gave good comments like “you’ll get ‘em next time” and “nice job”. He always kept the kids motivated and ready to go by giving high fives and slapping each other’s hands. When he was playing on the Raiders he missed an easy catch and some people would go off on a rampage but Sandy he just kept going like it never happened. When Perry Warden Showed up to one of Sandy’s games he kept saying negative remarks like “nice job…not” and “get him out of there”. That doesn’t only hurt Sandy but it hurts his teammates. One game Sandy was playing, the other team lost and a kid went wild and he started insulting Sandy’s team and threw his glove and he was mad.
“When I got the job, I looked at the program as a bus,” said Hoyt. “I am jumping onto the bus. The program and school already exist, and there is a recent history of not having a successful basketball program. How do I change that for the better and make it my own? The first thing is get rid of all the people that you don 't want on the bus, and that is what I did. Then I looked at it as a scorched earth theory, where you burn everything that preexist to the ground. We got new jerseys, new players, and everything else is dead. We brought in new freshman, and those freshman were going to be foundation of what 's going to come down the road.”
After reports of several transgressions and the surface of a damaging videotape which appeared to show Knight physically assaulting a former player, the president of Indiana, Neil Reed, had explained to Knight that there was a zero tolerance policy where Knight was concerned (Wolff, 2000). Despite the repeated warnings and the newly stated zero tolerance policy, Knight continued to commit transgressions that eventually got him fired from Indiana University where he had coached for almost three decades. Indiana University took a thrashing from Knight fans’ over this decision, but keeping Knight as an agent of the University could have resulted in a legal disaster. From a Biblical worldview, the University showed mercy in the second chances that it provided to Knight. In addition, their actions did not appear to be malicious when they made the decision to let him go.
Joe Paterno has been at the helm of Penn State football since 1966. In the world of intercollegiate sports it’s hard to find a coach that has a tenure with the same institution for more than ten years. In the past 37 seasons, Coach Paterno has won an astonishing 336 games, breaking Paul “Bear” Bryant’s record of 323 set at the University of Alabama. Besides obtaining the most wins in NCAA Division 1-A football, Paterno has two national championships (1982 and 1986) and a Big Ten conference championship in 1994 (DeLassus). These great moments add to the tradition of Penn State football history, but that’s exactly the point, Paterno’s triumphs are history. The past four seasons, including the 2003 season, have consisted of more losses than wins. Recent trends in college football usually point the blame of a losing football team in the direction of the head coach. For Penn State and Joe Paterno this situation should be no different. The dilemma is in the hands of the school’s Director of Athletics, Timothy M. Curley, who has to convince one of the greatest football coaches to step away from the game he has been devoted to for over 50 years.
Stakeholders in which Fantasia must take into consideration before making an informed decision include Fantasia. As the mother of the baby she is the primary stakeholder in this situation. The decision she makes could potentially have profound effects on the outcome of her future. The Syracuse department of athletics, teammates, the University of Syracuse and other Universities team members should be taken into consideration. Finally, regardless whether or not the father is involved in the decision making process, consideration of his thoughts and feelings must be given proper attention in this matter. Before a final decision ...

The behaviors of the athletic management staff can affect the team performance and temperance. This has been evident in the case scandal of the Baylor university basketball team. However, there is a great need for those in leadership of the universities to evaluate constantly the behaviors of the staff concerned with various games in the school. This will make such cases to be evaded and when problems occur, they can be timely handled.
College athletes are manipulated every day. Student athletes are working day in and day out to meet academic standards and to keep their level of play competitive. These athletes need to be rewarded and credited for their achievements. Not only are these athletes not being rewarded but they are also living with no money. Because the athletes are living off of no money they are very vulnerable to taking money from boosters and others that are willing to help them out. The problem with this is that the athletes are not only getting themselves in trouble but their athletic departments as well.
The many jobs the athletic director has, another one is making budgets for the team sports. They are also in charge of ra...
First, illegal recruiting in NCAA athletics is tremendously unethical. “The extremely high stakes of recruiting can sometimes compromise the values that coaches need to teach: honesty, integrity, and loyalty” (Spillane). No matter how high the stakes, there is no reason to put all morals and values aside for the sake of a college sport. Whether it is a low level recruit or a superstar, it all has to deal with the same principle, meaning that if the coach doesn’t regard the two recruits equally he isn’t doing his job right. As expectations for the coach begin to rise and job security decreases, it tempts the coaches to go out and attain the recruits no matter what the cost (Spillane). Although a coach may be susceptible to losing his job, it is better to be fired than to give up all of their morals and integrity. If a person is to give up all of their morals for any reason, it truly shows what type of person they are. Also, as explained in Modern Sports Ethics by Angela Lumpkin, there may not be any moral obligation for a coach or recruiter to make the right choice (66). Therefore, the coach’s character becomes ...
She was driven by something greater than trying to establish a winning tradition at Tennessee; it was trying to please her father. Summitt knew nothing but to work hard, and when she grew tired, she only worked harder. The player’s that came through Tennessee changed the way Summitt coached; in the beginning, young Summitt was trying to establish authority and credibility so she became shut off from her team. Older Summitt realized that she needed to connect with the players on an emotional level, so they would trust her judgement and coaching ability. There is no doubt that Summitt established authority and credibility, she has changed women’s basketball for the better. Summitt’s career is not defined by statistics or records, but by the impact she made on her players, other coaches, and basketball fans around the world. Pat Summitt’s impact on women’s basketball is a tough resume to match, and there is no equal to a woman of her
On February 15th, 2014 Ray Rice and Janay Palmer got into a fight which they were then both arrested with simple assault (CNN, 2014). It was only four days later that TMZ released out the videos of what happened that evening. In the video clip it starts off by the two entering in to the elevator. After inside he strikes her repetitively where she then hits her head off the railing after such a traumatic blow to the head and drops to the ground where she is then knocked out. He is then seen to pick her up and drag her out of the elevator until hotel staff stumbles upon the scene. On July 24th, Rice receives a two game suspension for his actions. Only a two game suspension for beating his wife? People all across the world are stunned by the disciplinary action that is released after what was seen from the video. This showed people that obviously the law enforcement does not care about a man beating his wife even if he is a professional athlete, but because he was such a talented athlete it simply did not matter. The NFL did not want to believe what they had seen. Instead they wanted to set it aside and act as if it did not happen, but that was not about to happen. September 8th is a day that will forever be remembered by Ray Rice and his family. That is the day that his football
