Recommended: Role of social media in society

A key aspect of life is communication; very little would be possible without interactions between people. Breakthroughs in fields such as, medicine and space exploration are a result of thoughts of large groups of people uniting by communication. Beginning from an era of sending letters to ancient phones followed by emails and presently social networking [6]. Online social networking is the use of an Internet website that enables self -identify and connection with other members based on one or more elements of commonality [2]. Social networking is promptly dominating the field of communication Social networking comes to play more significant part in everyday lives of not only teenagers, but business organizations, mass media, business and education, to name just a few. Based on research, online social networking sites are in the top five most visited websites on the Internet with over 116 million users and becoming challenging to live without for modern life, hence being regarded as essential to modern life [1]. This essay will argue whether online social networking is essential to modern life. Social networking is believed to have several essential benefits including keeping in contact with individuals effortlessly and cheaply, conveying information instantly, developing connections internationally, instant and cheaper professional networking.

Firstly, Social networking is essential to modern life because it allows persons in different areas to communicate effortlessly and cheaply. Communication began as sending telegraphs followed by sending letters by post, which may take as long as a week to convey a message. [9] Conversely, it could be argued that using social networking for job employments is not an appropriate and essential for appointing individuals, as some people could be disadvantaged such as, people from poor-urban ethnic groups being rejected because not having social networking access [9]. Some could also argue that, social networking is not essential to modern life as it posts key challenges. For instance, developing a policy, updating Information technology, which requires training of employees and increasing security to avoid Internet scams, henceforth-increasing business expenditure and a longer time frame, in modern life when time is a limiting factor (Dewar, 2012). Nevertheless; social networking is essential as it reduces costs, is faster and more efficient in the professional sector.
