Have you ever seen the television show on NBC Dateline To Catch a Predator? Well if you haven’t, Chris Hansen, the host of the show, has a set up to catch predators online who are trying to meet younger children and arrest predators for trying to seduce young children. This is just one case of why parents are becoming more worried for their children to be using the Internet. Parents strive to find ways to keep their children safe while using the Internet and there are several ways you can do that right at home by protecting your children, having the computer in a high traffic place, and blocking websites.
First of all, a great way to start protecting your children is to have a computer in a high traffic area in the house where children can be observed. Children need to be safe at all times while using the Internet. By having a computer in a traffic area of the house children can ask for permission to use the computer easier. They can also ask for help and someone will be around to help. For example, my sister and her husband have a Mac computer in their living room because that’s where they spend most of their time. They also have it in the living room for helping each other out on homework for their jobs, or even watch the baby while they’re doing homework themselves. It’s not bad to have a computer in a high traffic area; it’s actually a good thing for parents that way everyone can see it. It may be hard for teens and they think they are the typical annoying parents, but parents are only being annoying so keeping children safe is easier.
Another way to keep children safe while using the Internet besides having the computer in a high traffic area is to watch where children or teens have visited. A way you can check where ch...

... different matter. Or in another case a mother or a father might block a certain site because of the lack of face-to-face socializing. As mention in the book What Matters in America chapter one on Social networks page 37, it also says kids are losing communication skills. Most importantly, this helps kids know what they are doing wrong and will keep them safe from chat rooms and ending up meeting who gets them into a lot of trouble or in danger there selves.
Parents all around the world worrying about there own child’s safety while online and by keeping your computer in a high traffic area, taking a peek at the history folder on the computer and learning how to block websites, it is definitely possible for children to be safe and as well as parents to feel safe. It will be a good feeling to know your child is in good hands with the computer you know you can trust.
We have all watched television shows, we have heard the warnings, and have read numerous articles that expose internet predators and pedophiles. Most of us are aware of the dangers surrounding children and teenagers as they navigate the internet’s virtual world. There is no shortage of predators online. Chris Hanson has a very popular show called To Catch a Predator that has helped bring awareness to the public of this heinous crime against children, and while this is extremely important to know and prevent, there is another large segment of society that is at risk too. This paper will focus on this “other” population.
Kids now want to be more independent and have more freedom which might scare some if not most parents. A lot of parents look at the internet as a dangerous tool and not a tool where their kids can have some freedom. Although parents need to realize that they can’t protect their kids from all ...
Online predators, pornography, drug trafficking, piracy, and hate sites are just some of the dangers that a child can face on the internet. The article “The Undercover Parent” by Harlan Coben states that parents should use spyware to monitor their children. Coben argues that parents should be able to know what is in their children’s lives. he believes that spyware can prevent children from being targeted by internet predators on social networking sites and even prevent children from being cyber bullied. I agree with Coben’s claim that parents should consider using spyware as a protection for their teens online. There are many possible dangers facing children on the internet and it is essential that parents install spyware.
Parenting has become a challenge for the 21st century modern world and with so many technological advancements parents have started relying on High-Tech gadgets to stay connected with their kids. Interest and demand of using technology by parents to monitor their kids are increasing all around the world. As pointed out in the article “More Parents Going High-Tech to Track Kids” by Martha Irvine, how technology is helping parents track their kids’ location, how fast they were driving, and what they buy or eat. Even though these devices are helpful to parents, but they may be dangerous to the kids in many ways and that's why parents should be extra careful on its use.
This is not a solution because there are ways to evade this method. Furthermore, children can be very sneaky and find ways around other, less radical ways of monitoring, so in cases such as these, spyware is best. A child can simply browse in private mode, which stops the browser from logging visited internet pages or by deleting part of their history. Another popular method to monitoring children is by having parent-child talks.
Another reason for not censoring the internet is the psychological effects that it can have on a child. The filtering of the internet can tell a child that adults do not trust them to surf the net on their own. This can lead them to believe that they can not make their own decisions, and that a computer determines what right and wr...
...pornography with such ease, parents are going to have to figure out a way to keep their children off these sites. The only other option is coming home and finding them looking at something they shouldn't. Because some children, given the opportunity, are going to seek out these sites, even if you ask them not to. After all, children will be children.
When children or teenagers are using computers, tablets, and cell phones parents should monitor them. They
¨The Undercover Parent¨ by Harlan Coben, published in an online newspaper ¨New York Times¨ (16 March 2008), claims that the Internet is dangerous for kids. Harlan Coben explains how spyware could be a resource that keeps track of our kids’ internet use, but how it could also invade sons’ and daughters’ privacy. He also claims that parents should have conversations about their concerns with teens, and let them know spyware is a possibility. In my opinion, I quite agree and do not agree with the most of it.
The internet is a wonderful learning tool. Of course, like any good thing, the Internet comes with its ups and downs. There are several things that aren’t suitable for any child on the internet, such as pornography, violent material, adult chat rooms, and racist or hateful sites, there are even websites about cheating in schools.
The Internet has affected our lives in a considerable way. We use the internet in order to connect with society, look up information for work and educational purposes, shop, handle daily errands such as paying bills and so on. Children are not excluded from this, in fact they are capable of using internet more effectively than adults. The reason for this being that chıldren are able to learn to use new technology faster than theır adult counterparts. It is wıdely accepted that having internet connection can be very useful for children, teachers and children consider internet as a powerful tool to access to academic sources to research for theır classes and homework (Ofcome, 2007). Also having the internet is perceived as an good opportunity for children to meet new people and keep up with their friends. This is true if children use internet in a proper way. However, there is a possibility that they can encounter inappropriate materials even while searching for educational information or trying to relax with games. Violent scenes and uncensored sexual material cause serious damage for childhood development, as they can cause children to be aggressive and lonely adults. The first solution for protecting children from these harms is internet blocking and filtering programs. Although they come to forefront by means of their easy usage properties, most of the time filtering programs cannot provide an overall coverage from the internet’s harm. Therefore, parents should have involved in this process by monitoring and helping their children. Moreover media lessons which inform students about the internet’s harm can be very helpful for children.
There are programs available to those parents who feel it is necessary to monitor their childs use of the Internet. Cybersitter can be purchased for around $39.95, and can help to regulate your web browser keeping your childs access to the world wide web restricted. There is even and option in which incoming and outgoing e-mails for inappropriate material.
In conclusion computers are a wonderful device that makes life a little bit easier. But they come with many disadvantages if mistreated. Children have advanced in technology and know how to mistreat them. Parents should always watch out for their kids, while using the computers. Cut down the usage on computers. Promote fun physical activity or give them a certain time limit on how long they can stay on for. Computers are bring mistreated almost everyday. Parents can help stop that is they pay more attention to what their kids are doing.
To begin with, while using the internet, children are exposed to different kinds of materials. In most cases, they are exposed to inappropriate ones such as sexually explicit materials and/or violent ones (Magid, 2003). Some children, especially adolescents, are curious about sexuality and sexually explicit material; they can move away from their family and seek fulfillments for their curiosities online. Hence, dangerous situations commonly occur due to the child molesters on the other side of the net waiting to find those children, seduce them, and manipulate them (Freeh, 2008). It is also worth mentioning that other children can be exposed to such resources by accident; they can receive them through e-mail spam or when a popup that contains violent or sexual materials opens in front of them (Magid, 2003). Also, there are some people who attempt to sexually exploit children online. Some of them progressively seduce their targets through the use of attention, affection, kindness, and gifts. They are often willing to devote considerable amounts of time, money, and energy during this course of action. They listen to and empathize with the problems of children. They are aware of the latest music, hobbies, and interests of the youngster. They also attempt to gradually lower children's inhibitions by slowly introducing sexual context and content into their conversations (Freeh, 2008) which can get them to gain the trust of those targeted children and can lead to meet them face-to-face.
A major threat to the people who use the internet, especially children, is the sex industry. It is very hard to ignore as there are thousands of sites of which many have very unobvious site names. This makes it very easy for children to access accidentally sites which are very inappropriate and can have great harmful effects on a young childs very impressionable mind. It is not acceptable for a young person to be exposed to the intimate world of adult pornography which can include anything from child porn to bestiality. Fortunately y...
