The Internet is like many great inventions, it has some flaws, but the pros definitely outweigh the cons. The Internet has become an educational tool for students, increased communication, and allowed for knowledge of all subjects to be shared. These are but a few benefits of the Internet. Censorship is generally an evil and should be avoided where ever possible (Butt, 2000). The regulation or censorship of the Internet will make it difficult for people to express their mind openly, block even more useful sites for students, and deny American citizens their first amendment right to free speech.

One reason many people are against censorship is because it hinders the thoughts and ideas of their minds. Internet regulation will tend to curb the freedom of expression, which is perhaps one of the most conspicuous factors that are instrumental in the success (Manohar, 2011). This is true, the Internet provides a voice to people who otherwise wouldn’t have a say. Through websites, forums, and blogs the average man or woman can express his or her opinion about the latest sports game, the news, politics etc.

Another reason why people dislike the idea of Internet censorship is because it denies American people their first amendment right to freedom of expression. “The freedom to express an opinion is a right Americans have long treasured” (Dougherty, 2010). Also, the freedom of speech is guaranteed to Americans under the first amendment (Dougherty, 2010). In 1997, the United States Supreme Court stated that the Internet is protected by the First Amendment to the Constitution which means that your right to freedom of speech applies while online (Dougherty, 2010).
