The distinctive characteristic of the eighteenth and nineteenth century Boston- Irish Immigrants that set them apart is their willingness to work and persevere while keeping close to God. This is important because it plays a big role in the formation of Catholic lives in the New World, and adds a new culture into the English controlled region. This will be shown in an investigation of Irish perseverance through different types of work while they incorporated their Catholicism into everyday life. The Immigrants were located in New York, Chicago, and Boston, but I will focus on The Boston Irish. The Boston Bay, on the coast of the Atlantic Ocean, locates Boston. This brings many other cultures to impact their way of life from overseas. Boston was also found in the New England Area. This means that the English had a lot of influence in the lifestyle lived. In this area, there are not many landforms, but mostly waterways. One major landform is the Taconic Mountains, which are a side range of the Appalachian Mountains. These mountains vary the climate in Massachusetts. Some major waterways include the Boston Harbor, the Atlantic Ocean, the Charles River, and Cape Cod. Boston is located in an area based on water, which bring in many other cultures by water, and mix the races of the people they encounter everyday through work and church. The climate in Boston is cold, since it is by the water, and they get a lot of rain, in quick, heavy intervals. The rain was good for farmers when they grew crops. The winters take up the majority of the year, which usually consists of small and short nor’easters. Boston, being one of the nation’s biggest cities at the time, was a plentiful amount of other races mixing in their towns. The... ... middle of paper ... ...urs do now. It may not be as heavily based as it used to be, but it still has thing lineage back to the Irish- Catholics that lived almost a century ago. The characteristics that came to shape the life in New England were the rocky, barren soil, the extreme climate and the rich waters. Although there was farming in New England , colonists looked to other means of survival. They looked to the rich waters for fishing and trade. The coastline of New England was very fertile with sealife. So, fishing became a way of commerce and trade providing a steady economy to New England. Because of the rocky soil and extreme climate, the colonists were forced to plant many different crops on a small pa...

The setting is eighteenth century Boston, Massachusetts. The population in Boston between 1760’s and 1790’s ranged from sixteen thousand to eighteen thousand . Some of the major building that are well known for the time period are Old State House; originally called Town House, this building is very historic the Boston Massacre of 1770 took place in front of this building, also the Declaration of Independence was first read off the balcony. Also Boston has the Old South Meeting House; which in that time was the largest meeting space, this was where the “convocation met before the Boston Tea Party, and this is community commemorated the Boston Massacre” . Another building is the Old North Church, the first stone was laid in April of 1723 taking twenty-two years to complete, this is the oldest church is Boston today. This church’s steeple was immortalized by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow in his poem “The midnight ride of Paul Revere” . The geography in Boston is that it was a coastal region with poor soil, this was not a farming community, and most people that lived in Boston were people that practice a trade or a craft. The climate in Boston ca...

During this time, Boston was still taking shape. It had more intellectuals than most other colonies; there were philosophers, inventors, eleven doctors, and one doctor with an actual, certified degree. These people were working hard to improve Boston, coming up with new remedies, inventions, and ideas that helped expand people’s way of thinking (while of course staying within Puritan guidelines).
...for the Irish Catholic immigrants as well as the others, “the old-stock drive for conformity and community represented attacks on their culture, religion and ethnicity. Repeatedly their stake in American society, their right to be American citizens, was denied” (Dumenil, 248). I agree that it was their right to become American citizens. Discriminating against Irish Catholic immigrants was unjust, especially for the reason that there is no rational or justifiable way to discriminate against which people are allowed to immigrate and which are not.
People from different race and regions made this city a unique place. Howard wrote, “over the centuries, generations of New Yorkers descendants of people from every part of the world-have built an amazingly diverse state, a place of picturesque towns and villages as well as bustling cities, of farmland, industry, commerce and astounding engineering achievements” (6). New York City is an increasingly diverse and dynamic city with all immigrants making up the majority of the residence in some neighborhoods. The more than doubling of the city’s immigrant population since 1970 has given rise to this dense ethnic neighborhood. Variety of languages from all across the world is spoken throughout the five boroughs. There are numerous cultural organizations in the five boroughs each with integral to the diversity that defines New York City. Queens is in fact the most ethnically and racially diverse borough in New York. I live in queens and I have neighbors whom are originally from Spain, China, Russia, and India. From them I learned a lot of information about their country, many recipes and little bit of their language too. Hanging out with my neighbors is not only fun but also a learning process for me. Every community has their own national and religious festivals. In our festivals we invite each other and thus our festivals become more enjoyable. Throughout the five boroughs the city is
Since its founding in 1630, the city has enjoyed being an entertainment hub for the country. As such, it is one of the oldest entertainment capitals in the United States. For those who need something to do in this city while they are waiting for the nightlife to light up, Boston offers plenty of landmarks, parks, tourist attractions, and other sightseeing opportunities throughout the entire area. 33 Restaurant & Lounge is just one of the many trendy eateries and bars
The major cities of the United States are all very interesting, after I analyzed my decision; I decided to research the great city of Boston, Massachusetts. Boston was founded on September 17, 1630 and has a rich historical background making it a very important city in the United States. “The city of Boston was the home to several important events during the American Revolution such as: the Boston Massacre, Boston Tea Party, the Siege of Boston, Battle of Lexington and Concord, and the Battle of Bunker Hill.” (Snow, Caleb H. (1828). History of Boston. Abel Bowen.) These were all significant events that helped shape the city Boston has become today.
The culture of New England was one unique to New England. The northern colonies of New England were dominated by the Puritans, and settled primarily for religious reasons. The environment of New England consisted of rocky soil, dense forests, and large numbers of fish (Sarcelle, 1965). The culture that developed in New England was appropriate to such conditions.
Religion in James Joyce's Dubliners Religion was an integral part of Ireland during the modernist period, tightly woven into the social fabric of its citizens. The Catholic Church was a longstanding tradition of Ireland. In the modernist spirit of breaking away from forces that inhibited growth, the church stood as one of the principal barriers. This is because the Catholic faith acted as the governing force of its people, as portrayed in James Joyce’s Dubliners. In a period when Ireland was trying to legitimize their political system, religious affiliations further disillusioned the political process. The governing body of a people needs to provide a behavioral framework, through its constitution, and a legal process to make delegations on issues of equity and fairness. When religion dominates the government that is in tact, it subjects its citizens to their religious doctrines. In terms of Catholicism in Ireland, this meant that social progress and cultural revolutions were in terms of what the church would allow. The modernist realized that this is what paralyzed the Irish society of the times. In the stories of Dubliners the legal system is replaced by the institute of religion, and it is the presence and social context of the Catholic Church which prevents the Irish community from advancement. ...
The Catholic Church had a great influence on Social policy in Ireland which began in the 19th Century. They worked from two broad headings; the teaching influence and the practical influence.
