There are many significant differences between Chinese academic writing and English academic writing. Most of the time, it is difficult to write essays in English for many multilingual students like me, not only because we have to translate Chinese to English, but also because of the different styles of academic writing we learned in China. However, after the first semester of the writing program, I acquired many basic concepts and tools about academic writing and these tools have helped me throughout the semester. Furthermore, these techniques are essential and necessary in order to write a successful essay. As I look through my first essay, I find countless errors and places I can improve. In my revised essay, I carefully restated my thesis statement, reconstructed my PIE paragraphs, and worked on stronger transitions words, because these three parts are the heart of a successful essay. By revising these parts, my essay is easier for reader to understand and my idea is carried out throughout the whole essay.
I completely changed my thesis statement because the original one did not have enough evidence from the text to be supported. In my original essay, my thesis statement is “the author uses various symbols to reveal us the vicious inward of Little Red Riding Hood, the wolf is portrayed as a cunning male and the color red represents her complicated personality. This thesis statement has several ideas; however, I did not find enough evidence to support these ideas, in my body paragraph, there were no quotes reflecting Little Red Riding Hood’s complicated personality, thus making it difficult for readers to understand. Furthermore, this thesis statement did not reveal the message author wants to deliver, which lacks the most im...

...ce between my original essay and my revised essay, by using the techniques I acquired in this class; I corrected many errors with my original essay, and I feel satisfied with what I learned through this revision. As a matter of fact, not only I learned how to improve the structure of my essay, but also, I had a better understanding of the story. When I reread the story with these writing techniques in mind such as PIE, thesis and transition, I had a better interpretation of certain ideas. Also, it is more comfortable for me to write academic essays now, and this revision has given me an opportunity to test what I learned from this course. Now I am certain that if people use the correct writing techniques, they will be able to write successful essays even though their native language is not English.
In general, I like this course because it taught me a lot of great things, such as how to revise the essay in order to make it better. My writing has improved a lot throughout this year, I learned how to organize my essay’s structure, using the transition sandwich to perfect my writing. In the future, I hope to continue developing all the skills that I learned in this English class, and I will continue to go to the Writing Center to ask for help to perfect my writing. However, it is the end of the year, but it does not mean that this is the end of my writing.
I used to hate writing a lot. Especially when I was in Academic English classes. I don’t like how they forced us to use the five paragraph essay. Therefore, when you told us we should ditch the five-paragraph format in the beginning, I was like “I knew that’s not right!” At first I don’t understand some of the assignments that you gave to us. However, soon I realized that they all built up towards the final critical essay.
Throughout this semester we have had to write many types of essays. Although this is a college English class there is still room for improvement. I made much improvement during the semester of the class. I was able to identify my weaknesses. I learned how to make improvements to the areas I was having problems in. Although each essay we did was different I was able to begin with one essay and throughout the semester turn it into two other essays. I was able to change my style of writing to fit the type of audience I was working with. I will continue to work on my writing and keep improving it.
Throughout the semester i only learned few new things but i did improve and solidify my skill of writing. Before my first year of college my skills have always undermined by other high school english teachers and with that came disappointing grades. I am writing this paper as a reflection of the semester and the progress i have made as a writer. I now understand many things that my high school teachers have done a poor job demonstrating and i am grateful that i decided to take my own route in my education instead of their syllabus. I entered the semester with anxiety that i would perform as i did before but i clearly outdid my own expectations by receiving top grades on my essays.
The classes that I had taken were worthy and brilliant but my flow to make the essay smooth and natural was hard to achieve, my essays sounded inconsistent and odd. To add on, my transitions of the story was awkward and misplaced, but in my thought it was great. In addition, to fix my weakness I edited and read it out loud multiple times, but my goal was not achievable within the time I had with my instructors. Moving on, from this class I am expected to learn a great amount of skills for grammar and techniques for a better writer. The new and emphasized rules to a better author; from this class I want to a walkout with a fundamental of how to improve the quality of my essay. Furthermore, knowledge that I will preserve to reflect and transfer into essays of my own profession in many fields of occupation. Not to mention, I want my writing to not only appease my satisfaction, but also be acknowledged by other individuals of my work. Moreover, during the period of my writing journey, one of the most positive I had been writing a summary for a book with my own interpretation. This experience was in my English Ap class with Ms.McBurnette-Arguelles,
When it came to the process of writing my first, second, and third essay’s, there was clear visual improvement that I have become a better writer in certain aspects. As for essay one, I tended to rely on my writing skills as a high school student rather than use the components of a successful college student essay. This was definite once I received the feedback given by ...
I did not have a firm writing philosophy before this semester, but I to some degree I understood the importance writing can have on a situation. Now I understand that writing has two outcomes: gaining support or losing support. When writing an essay it is best if the writing is as specific as possible. This way the audience is hopefully not left with a confused opinion about the topic. Since the beginning of the semester I have put a conscious effort to change my writing style. Instead of the box format that is learned in high school I try to use a more graceful approach while still being organized. Also, I evaluate the credibility of a source before I use the information to support my thesis and understand the roles of using ethos, pathos, and logos. My assignments are now written with more developed thought by elaborating on ideas in the body paragraphs. By participating in the assignments throughout the semester I have accomplished, to different extents, the objectives for the English Composition 101 course. My writing has improved in multiple areas such as knowing who my audience is, and how writing drafts and making revisions help me evaluate the effectiveness of my essay. I am also aware that academic writing differs from day-to-day writing because for academic writing I need to present the most credible evidence in an organized format. Furthermore, I now can effectively evaluate my writing to know where I can improve.
In conclusion, I would like to generously thank my English teachers for teaching me the way of writing the essay, for this is the single most important thing that I have ever learned in my whole life. I will keep this talent with me for the rest of my life, for I cannot wait until the day in which my dreams of world essay writing to become reality. Without English teachers in our lives, there would be no live. This is true because we would not know how to write such important essays, and therefore we would not be happy and everyone in the world would most likely turn to social media and television, which we all know leads ultimately to death.
This essay taught me that even though I was learning a lot from this course, that there was still room to improve. Likewise, I ended up with the assumption I had done great on this essay since I wrote about a topic I enjoyed, makeup. I was proven wrong. The evaluation paper called for evaluating and expanding on the quotes you had provided in your paper, something I wasn’t as familiar with until this class. I didn 't do so well on this particular essay but I had the opportunity to learn from my mistakes. Mrs.Robinson gave a get out of jail free card when she said we could rewrite one of our first three essays and this was the essay I chose. After revising this essay, I truly feel like I understand more about the editing process. I went back and checked each paragraph to make sure everything was perfect, changed word choice, and looked over and over for grammatical errors. Because of this I now know that I need to revise the essay before I turn it in since every writer makes
Throughout this semester I have learned many ways of writing through two main essays literacy narrative and comparison and contrast. These two essays have taught me how to correctly fix my comma splices, thesis statements, and capitalization. I have engaged in numerous learning material during this summer class. Many times when I thought it would be hard to work on those three developments I never gave up. I gain more positive feedback from my teacher because he pointed out most of my mistakes I made on both literacy narrative and comparison and contrast essays to help me understand what is it that I need to work on. My development as a writer became stronger.
This English course was a vastly informative class. We covered lots of criteria material and discussed topics during class. During the course, I have accomplish a variety of goals I once thought were unachievable. I still have a little ways to go to become the best writer I can be but by taking this course I have been able to expand and learn as a writer, editor, and analyzer of my work, peers work, and academic work. I have learned from others as others have learned from me. I have tried to improve particular aspects of my writing but continue to struggle with other aspects. I have found new strategies and breakthroughs that have allowed me to improve my essays. However, I am still learning how to write and believe that I always shall be.
As a second language learner I have never expected myself to be a perfect writer throughout the semester. Even If English was my first language still, I would not be a perfect writer. It is not about first or second language, it is about how well I understand the learning objectives. Then organizing and writing with my own ideas and putting them in my paper. I am going to be honest, I am not good at English subject and English subject is my strongest weakness than the other subjects. In this paper I will discuss and analyze my own writing, reflecting on the ways that my writing has improved throughout the semester.
I have learned many things throughout the course of the term, including such things as: how to write an essay and how to improve on essays that I have already written, how to locate and composite better research through the use of numerous resources found at the campus library, the internet, and the “Common Sense” textbook, how to cite research, examples, and quotations properly within the contents of my research paper as well as document it accurately according to MLA standards. Through the exploration of the “Subjects and Strategies” textbook, I have learned nine different methods used when writing an effective essay and how the different writing styles affect the overall theme and tone of the essay when used properly. This past semester, I have encountered many difficulties when trying to write these essays, but through the use of the textbooks, the aide of the instructor, and once I was able to classify the different types of essays and styles, I found them possible to overcome.
This English class has prepared me not only for academic writing, but also for writing in my future career. I will continue to practice my writing skills by reading and writing more papers. Based on my collection of essays in this portfolio, I am confident that I can pass the class and receive Clear
