Franklin Delano Roosevelt and Barack Obama have both showed to be great and true leaders in their own time. They've had similar burdens and benefits, with the lives of Americans sitting on their shoulders. They both wanted to make America a greater nation and more. Roosevelt and Obama needed to reassure Americans and have the faith of Americans, and what better way to do that than speeches? On January 6, 1941, Franklin Delano Roosevelt delivered an impactful speech to Congress that greatly changed this nation. He looked ahead to a world supported on "four essential human freedoms": freedom of speech, freedom of religion, freedom from want, and freedom from fear. The "four freedoms" symbolizes America's war aims and still offers hope to the people because they know they are fighting for freedom. The first two freedoms, of speech and religion, are protected by the First Amendment in the United States Constitution. The other two freedoms are beyond the Constitutional values protected by the U.S. Bill of Rights. Roosevelt additionally included the "freedom from fear" against national aggression before the concept of a United Nations for this protection was visualized or discussed by world leaders and allied nations. Roosevelt's speech was therefore persuasive because of the way he used rhetoric in all of his speeches. He used the power of rhetoric very well by connecting with his audience in a manner that influenced the manner they thought. He did this by using repetition and plenty of emotion in what he is saying. An example of how Roosevelt uses ethos to form a relationship with his audience in his "Four Freedoms" speech is, "That determination of ours..." and when he repeatedly says "we". Roosevelt connects with his audience by pe... ... middle of paper ... ...onomy, high unemployment, all with fear and worry about the future. Both leaders have had to share the benefit- or difficulty- of high expectations, not only from the American public, but from the whole world. A ton has changed since now and 73 years ago; laws have been passed, government has been changed, and each president has their own, different visions. Since his first term, it shows that President Obama has been taking a not-so-different road than Franklin Roosevelt. Obama has been following a couple of Roosevelt examples, and they all end the same way it did for Roosevelt. Victorious or trouble. The current president and former president have/had their goals and wishes, and it has affected us all in some way or another. I believe if they've inspired someone or have fixed a problem, then they've been doing an impressive job with their roles and responsibility.
