In the novel Brave New World by Aldus Huxley, brainwashing was used in the form of hypnopaedia also know as sleep teaching. Hypnopaedia is similar to the form we use in modern television. Brainwashing is a complicated process that can be used for many reasons. Brainwashing is a prolonged psychological process designed to erase an individual's past beliefs and concepts and substitute new ones (Summers 69). It combines the compliance method, the education method, and persuasion into one big process (Layton). The process is often carried out without one's consent or against their will. The system of brainwashing can be broken down into steps. The first step is that the interrogator breaks down the victim's identity so that it does not work anymore. Step two is to replace the victim's old beliefs with new ones that will work in the environment the interrogator has created (Layton).
In “Brave New World,” Huxley creates a world that is complete and utterly disturbing to what humanity could become. The people in the World State are controlled through psychological conditioning on a ground breaking scale. They are made to have a low intellectual rating, and one acts more of an animal than as a human. One of the most effective psychological tests that take place during this book is sleep teaching, which is a practice that makes the brain learn things that are being repeated while the body sleeps. This method is very effective because the individual doesn’t realize what is happening, so one wouldn’t be against it and one couldn’t try to stop it.

Antidepressants are a prescription drug now used by people of all ages. They have become a part of society, therefore, taking antidepressants is not frowned upon. Antidepressants are used to make people feel “happier” and not to feel sadness. This is shown in the dystopian society in the book Brave New World written by Aldous Huxley in 1932. In that society the people use soma, a well-known drug, to make them feel no pain and are conditioned to think soma fixes everything. Helmholtz and Bernard two main characters, do not take it because they want to be able to see the world for what it is. They also do not want soma to change how they feel; they want to appreciate nature. In addition Lenina and Henry love taking soma because then they cannot feel any pain, they are just happy all the time. In our society, people think that antidepressants will make them feel no pain and that these medications will fix all of their problems. In the novel, the people talk about the use of soma, which is a drug that the characters in the novel use when they feel any sort of emotion that they do not want to feel.
